10 EASY WAYS TO REPAIR DAMAGED HAIR

As a natural haired chic, it can be traumatic having damaged hair that is dry, brittle, and filled with split ends. You literally have to restrain yourself from tearing your hair out (what’s left of it, anyway) and you may be wondering what you can do to restore life to your hair. Some hair damage may be permanent especially given that hair is a collection of dead cells. But depending on the kind of damage, health can be restored to damaged hair. Otherwise, a pair of scissors, time, and better hair care routines may be the solution.

The first step to fixing damaged hair is to identify the cause of the damage. The most common causes of damage to hair are dyes and heat.

There are some habits and practices that over time will help to restore life, shine, and elasticity to your natural mane. Let's get into it.

Caring for your Natural Hair in Fall/Harmattan

Harmattan is here, the trees are getting bare. The dry and cold season is here again.  Many creatures of the earth will go into hibernation, and amongst those magical creatures will include our beautiful head of coils.

FALL/HARMATTAN HAIR CARE

My routine this season has not changed very much from my last winter season in FEBRUARY SECRETS: How to Care for Natural Hair in Winter/Dry Season

My basics are still the same;

SCALP MASSAGE/PRE-POO/HOT OIL TREATMENT
CO-WASH instead of Shampoo
DEEP CONDITION
SEAL
TRIM
PROTECT

Discovering Natural further emphasizes these point in her 5 Fall Natural Hair Care Routine MUST HAVE Video

What's slightly different for me this season is that I am incorporating a lot of protective styling. If you follow my instagram you know. Finally! Mushu and I can get a break from each other (Thank you holidays). It's hardly winter but it's already acting the most. One very important routine step to note is to REMEMBER TO TRIM.

How to know When to Trim Your Afro

I hadn't trimmed Mushu in a minute. These were the signs it showed and I knew it was finally time to grab the scissors;

1. More Fairy Knots and tangles  than usual: Even though I was moisturizing regularly and doing my low maintenance bantu knot out and braids. I was getting a lot more tangles than per usual.

2. SCANTY SEE THROUGH ENDS

3. DRYING FASTER THAN NORMAL: The more damage at your ends, the lesser the ability of your hair to retain moisture. You'd be pouring water into a basket. LITERALLY!

4. FAILED HAIRSTYLES: My simple usual hairstyles i used to get curl definition would bottom line result into knots and tangles with little to no definition. Even though I was following my exact same method of styling. This was a result of the coils refusing to clump together because of my damaged ends.

Instagram: @nappyese

5. MORE BREAKAGE AND HAIR IN THE SINK: If basic mechanical efforts like detangling, styling combing is causing more snaps and breaks than usual. THen you know it is time for a trim

So when you notice any of these signs above, treat yourself to a trim. REMEMBER: HEALTH OVER LENGTH. Watch the short video below showing you how I trim my 4c hair, including a few of my protective style ideas for the Dry months ahead.

Happy Trimming! What protective style look will you be sporting this fall

Why we need to acidify DIY Ayurvedic mixes before usage

If you are a DIY person when it comes to natural hair care, you probably would have come across ayurvedic hair care recipes, and seen that in many cases, you are asked to add acidic contents like lemon juice, ACV or aloe vera juice to a clay or ayurvedic powder before use. Being the learner that you are, you just go ahead and do it without asking yourself why. Your mantra is “If it worked for her that way, that’s good enough reason for me to do it.”

Acidifying some of these products before use is neither a random practice nor a concoction of a blogger’s brain content just because she wants to make her recipe more complex. There is actually a reason for this.

Take henna for example. For the dye properties of henna to be released, an acidic catalyst has to be added to it, in order to lower its pH.

When you are preparing clay mixes for your hair such as bentonite clay or some ayurvedic powders, you add acidic content to it. The major reason for this is that many of these products are alkaline in nature. Our hair is naturally acidic, with a pH of 4.5-5.5. Adding these products to our hair just like that will not have a good effect on our hair cuticles. It will raise them, and leave them raised, thus leading to dull, dry, frizzy hair. If you are already dealing with highly porous hair, this is definitely not something you want.

So in order to bring these products to a point where we can safely use them on our hair, we need to balance it out with an acidic content like lemon juice or ACV.

In summary, we acidify many ayurvedic products in order to neutralize the pH or make them slightly acidic, in order for them to be compatible with the pH of our hair and skin.

Please note that not all ayurvedic products are alkaline. For example, Shikakai and Reetha are acidic so there’s no need to acidify.

In order to determine whether your ayurvedic mix should be acidified before use or not, there are two options

  • Research the specific powder you want to use and find out about its pH. If it is more than 6, please acidify it a bit
  • Make the paste with the powder and water, with the consistency you would like to use on your hair. Test the paste with a pH strip. If it is more than 6, please acidify it a bit.

The more alkaline it is, the more content of acid you would need to add. Herein lies the disadvantage of DIY mixes over manufactured hair cosmetics… knowing how many spoons and cups of this and that to add to achieve what is safe for your hair shaft.

I hope this post has answered some of the questions you might have about ayurvedic mixes.

Are you a DIY person? Do you use ayurvedic powders? How do you acidify them? Please, let us know in the comment section.
Also, you have any questions, Please, let us know in the comment section.

Additional information to know:
The aloe plants pH and the harvested location where it is planted can affect the pH of the aloe vera. The pH for Aloe Vera is usually between 4.5 and 5.5, that is why it is great for the scalp which has similar pH. However, if the soil is poor and does not have a healthy proper soil pH, it can affect the plant. It is important to know that Aloe Plant is a TOUGH plant that can be quite resilient and keeps it pH very well. However, if the pH of the soil is too far off to the left, the aloe plant can actually be more acidic and if it too far off to the right, then it can be too alkaline in nature.

Caring For Your Hair in a Protective Style

I've had my self-styled individual faux locs for about three weeks now, and while I plan on taking them down soon, I am trying my best to make sure I take care of the style, as well as my hair underneath. As far as moisturizing goes, I've been doing the following:

1. African Naturalistas Daily Hair Mist - I try to spray my hair at least every other day. This gives my hair and scalp much needed moisture.

2. I follow it up with the African Naturalistas Anti-Dandruff Herbal Spray -

3. Then I apply Leave-In Conditioner (Cantu or African Naturalistas) to my roots. When I did the hairstyle, I attached the locs loosely to my roots, so that I would have easy access to them.

4. I apply African Naturalistas Hair Growth Oil Elixir to my scalp.

5. I finally finish with the African Naturalistas Anti-Breakage Butter Lotion (and sometimes, add the butter as well).

These steps have largely kept my scalp and hair in pretty good shape.

Hair Goals for 2017 and why

Hello everyone, it’s still January, and not too late to write our hair goals for the year. To have a goal, we have to first determine what we are trying to achieve. It might be longer hair, healthier hair, to be more adventurous with styles, etc.

I believe my hair is quite healthy, so my goal for the year is to maintain the health and gain a little more length.

This year, I have decided to be intentional about personal hair care against hair styling. I started this in the second half of last year but couldn't see it through because of travels and my wedding at the end of the year.

Washing

  • I will wash every 2 weeks
  • Henna treatment once in a while
  • Protein treatment once in a while
  • Deep condition during every wash
  • Hot oil treatment once in a while
  • Tea rinse once a month

Styling

  • Mostly twists and updos which I will do myself
  • Cut out salon visits as much as I can

Hair care

  • Moisturise daily
  • Scalp massage twice a week
  • Focus on sealing ends
  • Trim twice a year
  • Continue sleeping in a satin scarf

What I won't be doing

  • Too many experimental DIYs
  • Engaging in long and tedious wash days
  • Trying new things I'm not familiar with
  • Using heat on my hair

The focus this year, is to focus on health of the hair, not length. When the health is there, the length will automatically be added.

Let's see how that turns out for me.

What's your goal for 2017, and how do you intend to achieve it

Why Cowash?

I told my sister I wanted to incorporate cowashing into my regimen this year. To my surprise, she said she has stopped cowashing This is someone who diligently cowashed at least once a week or every two weeks. I asked her why, and she said she didn't see the point of cowashing anymore. Her exact words were, "What's the point of cowashing?"

Co-washing as we all know means Conditioner Washing, which is basically washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. It is important to note though that cowashing doesn't clean your hair as much as washing with regular shampoo will. Shampoo contains cleansers that are meant to remove product from your hair. Most conditioners don't have those cleansers, although there are some touted cleansing conditioners in the market.

As someone who tries to moisturize a few times a week, using some of the products here, it's very easy for my natural hair to have product build up, so at the end of the day, I'm not sure if cowashing needs to be a staple in my regimen. It can be something I do in between regular DC and washing, but it will definitely not take the place of my shampoo washing.

What do you do in regards to cowashing?

Whether or not you cowash, check out our African Naturalistas Store for the best products for your hair.

Reverse Washing - Conditioner before Shampoo?

Hello Naturalistas, How are you all doing? Kinks and all? I was going through my Instagram feed when "Reverse washing" captured my eyes and attention. I decided to do abit of research about it to understand what it really is about and why people are doing it.

A photo posted by Stacy-Ann (@sexy_jaican) on

What is Reverse Washing? This is basically using your conditioner first before you use your shampoo. Alot of times we are just used to doing things a certain way and I guess someone woke up one day and decided to challenge the "norm" and it worked for them or didn't. The result of going this route will change how your hair feels after on your wash days, for some the change will be positive and others it will be negative. At the end of the day, there is no harm in trying.

Why Shampoo?
The purpose of shampoo is to cleanse hair and scalp of dirt, product build up, remove excess sebum but not stripping it all off to still make the hair manageable.

Why Conditioner?
The purpose of conditioners is to strengthen and moisturise your hair after shampooing. Essentially, it restores a healthy moisture balance to your hair, close the cuticle to prepare your hair for the rigor of styling.

Reverse wash or not? I would say to each his own. There are people that have their hair feeling and looking better while using this method, but looking at the facts and shampooing after you condition your hair will have your hair strands swelling without balancing the alkaline pH out (Which is what the conditioner does) which is not the ideal state of the hair. Your hair will be more susceptible to damage.

Scientifically, there is the reason for shampooing before conditioning your hair and things like alternative methods do open up our minds to other possibilities (which is great) and while we something need to question why we do the things we do, it is important that we focus on the health of our hair in our quest of trying out new things.

Do you condition before you shampoo? or Do you Shampoo before you condition? Have you tried both? What was your experience like?

Ways to prevent breakage while transitioning

Hello Naturalistas, How are you all doing? Kinks and all?

One of the things transitioning naturalistas have to deal with is breakage. Breakage is a concern more for transitioning naturalistas because your hair is strained and stressed to a certain degree at the line of demarcation
(Where previously processed hair meets your new growth) and you can create more stress for your hair if it is not properly taken care of.  Here are a few ways to prevent breakage while transitioning.

Moisturise from roots to ends; It's important to also moisturise the ends of your hair. Avoid using too many products at once as that can cause your hair to dry out easily. Moisturising and sealing your hair generously will keep your hair soft and avoid the breakage that comes with dry hair.

Detangle your wet hair only; You do not want to detangle your hair while it is dry. Detangling is easier on your hair when it is conditioned and wet.

Trim Often

Deep condition weekly; Deep conditioning is the best friend of every transitioner. Deep conditioning helps strengthen the relaxed strands and keeps the natural bit of your hair in top shape! I know deep conditioning every week seems abit too much but your hair will thank you for it.

Cut out heat

Use satin Bonnet or satin pillow; You don't anything harsh rubbing against your hair.

Protective styling; Ensure to do protective styles that requires less manipulation and protective styles that do not cause more harm than good e.g Styles that pull too much at your scalp.

Protein treatment; You can do this once a month. It strengthens the 2 textures you have. A simple protein treatment recipe is;

1 Egg
2-3 tbsp Mayonnaise
2 tsp Honey
1 tsp Olive Oil (or any other oil you have)

Mix it all together then continue like you would a deep conditioning treatment.

What are the other ways you prevent your natural hair from breakage?
