How to Grow Your Hair With The Greenhouse Method

Greenhouse Method for Natural Hair Growth

What is the Greenhouse Method?

Just like in agriculture, where you create an alternate environment for a plant to thrive, with all required nutrients supplied and favorable weather available. The Greenhouse Method is basically creating a separate environment for your hair to thrive. The conditions are controlled to suit your hair regardless of the eternal state of the atmosphere.

HOW TO DETANGLE YOUR NATURAL HAIR WITHOUT DAMAGING IT

HOW TO DETANGLE YOUR NATURAL HAIR WITHOUT DAMAGING IT

Without a doubt, you have encountered tangles in your hair. Well, unless you have locs, that is. Tangles are caused when hair strands coil around each other. Tangles are a part of every naturalista’s hair growth journey and it is very important to know how to remove tangles and knots from natural hair without causing any damage. Detangling thick, natural, and dry hair can be very time consuming and difficult. Have you tried combing through your hair after a few days of rocking a badass afro puff only to hear the sound of hair ripping? Pretty sure you have.

10 EASY WAYS TO REPAIR DAMAGED HAIR

10 EASY WAYS TO REPAIR DAMAGED HAIR

As a natural haired chic, it can be traumatic having damaged hair that is dry, brittle, and filled with split ends. You literally have to restrain yourself from tearing your hair out (what’s left of it, anyway) and you may be wondering what you can do to restore life to your hair. Some hair damage may be permanent especially given that hair is a collection of dead cells. But depending on the kind of damage, health can be restored to damaged hair. Otherwise, a pair of scissors, time, and better hair care routines may be the solution.

The first step to fixing damaged hair is to identify the cause of the damage. The most common causes of damage to hair are dyes and heat.

There are some habits and practices that over time will help to restore life, shine, and elasticity to your natural mane. Let's get into it.

Deep Conditioning Your Natural Hair: Does It Really Matter?

As a practicing Naturalista, deep conditioning isn’t a new term for you. In fact, the first thing you learn on your way to becoming a Naturalista is the need to deep condition. The coven of natural hair queens starts chanting it to you every minute so you don’t forget! The natural hair movement is so strong that even relaxed hair sisters are bookmarking some of our methods, including deep conditioning. This is all because of how important deep conditioning is to your natural (and relaxed) hair.

So, What is Deep Conditioning?

Deep conditioning is one crucial step in your natural hair regimen that helps restore and maintain moisture in your hair. It is also essential for helping your hair to prepare for any manipulation that would come after deep conditioning.

We know what deep conditioning is, but why should we do it? Does it really matter? Yes, it does. Here are some reasons why you should deep condition your natural hair:

How To Keep Your Natural Hair Moisturized For An Entire Day

One of the biggest challenges our afro-textured natural hair faces is retaining moisture. This is because it is drier and more prone to breakage than other hair types. Moisture (i.e water) gives your hair its elasticity and the ability to bend and not break under manipulation (combing, washing, styling, e.t.c). For some of us, due to our highly porous hair, we find ourselves having to moisturize repeatedly just to keep our hair moisturized for a day.

Due to the nature of our hair, it needs to be moisturized EVERY SINGLE DAY but most of us do not have that time. We don't even remember which is why we have resorted to moisture retention methods like the LOC variation (LCO, LOCO e.t.c) to keep our hair moisturized for a longer period.

But what if I told you that there's a method to this?
What if I told you that there's a way to keep your hair moisturized for the entire day?

I feel like Glycerine is such an underdog and has often been overlooked as one of those oils. Meanwhile, it's so powerful that can provide all your moisture needs.

For those who don't know, here's what you should know about Glycerine.
  • It is a clear odorless liquid derived from plant oils particularly palm, soy or coconut oil.
  • It is a humectant; a substance that attracts moisture to the hair and skin which leaves it hydrated. This also means that it should be used in moderately hot/humid environments. In extremely dry weather like the harmattan period, it actually dehydrates the hair and cause damage and breakage.
At the moment, particuarly in Lagos, rainy season is almost upon us and so, the weather is very humid which makes it a perfect time to use glycerine as a moisturiser.

So, how do you use Vegetable Glycerin as a moisturizer since it can't be used alone?

It's simple. Make a hair spritz of 3/4 part water and 1 part glycerine. If you are feeling particularly fancy, substitute water for rosewater and step your moisture game way up! Pour the mixture in a mist and NOT a spray bottle and use it to moisturize your hair every morning. Don't forget to seal in the moisture with a coating/sealing oil or a hair butter.

I've been using this mixture for a couple of days and I noticed that everytime I touch my hair at different intervals throughout the day, my hair is ALWAYS moisturized. It's amazing!

You can get your vegetable glycerine and oils from the African Naturalistas store.

How Your Natural Hair Regimen Determines The Health & Length Of Your Hair

Hello, everyone!

For the first two years of my natural hair journey, I followed a strict regimen religiously and I got results. My hair grew and I was able to retain a decent length. But at the beginning of 2016, I thought it was time to relax things a bit. So, I adjusted my regimen in such a way that my hair wouldn't suffer because I still cared about health and length of my hair.

For instance, instead of deep conditioning every week, I changed it to every two weeks. Instead of moisturizing every day, I did the LOC method which allowed my hair to be moisturized for up to week. I thought it was the perfect regimen. Plus I got to wear my protective style which was mostly loose twists for up to two weeks.

I did not know this change will affect my hair.

My hair was straightened recently and I got to see the real length of my hair and to be honest, I was a bit disappointed. I thought it was going to be longer especially since my three-year nappyversary was around the corner. Then I started thinking back to what might have caused this 'setback'. Other than my change of regimen, I got a major trim in June and that was it.

So, here's my theory.

My hair was used to that regimen of constant deep conditioning and moisturizing so much that it thrived but then I stopped giving it what it needed and it just relaxed. It wasn't getting all that TLC anymore and it acted accordingly.

It's as simple as that.

The kind of attention you give your hair is the kind of result you'll get. It doesn't get any simpler than that. This also brings a lot into perspective. Inasmuch as we advocate to find what works for you, make sure it's not to the detriment of the health of your hair else your length will suffer.

So, if you're a lazy natural do not complain about the length of your hair because it's your fault. Also, the next time you hear someone complain about their hair not growing, ask about their regimen and you'll be surprised.

Have ever been in this kind of situation before?

How to Keep Natural Hair Moisturized Longer

How to Keep Natural Hair Moisturized Longer | DiscoveringNatural | African Naturalistas

In this video,  I demonstrate how I apply products to natural hair to keep it moisturized longer. This method helps reduce breakage in natural hair which also means hair length retention. In addition understanding your natural hair porosity is beneficial.

When it comes to moisturizing natural hair, you need to do it in layers. How to moisturize natural hair depends on each natural hair type and texture. Some use the LOC method, some use LCO method, LOCO method and LOCS method. However, the way you apply the Cream is very important because that is the part that contains emollients, humectants and other moisturizing properties.

African Naturalistas Vegetable Glycerine got Thumbs Up

It's one thing to give out products to people to use, test, and review. But it's another thing when as a start up business, you turn on your system to work, and you stumble on people talking about your products or services. And it is always great when what they are saying is something good. It always feels so good.

That's how we felt when we stumbled upon what Dabs of Naija Hair Can Grow had to say about one of our products, Vegetable Glycerine.

Why Your Child's Natural Hair is so DRY

I get asked over and over again and in today's post, I would love to address 5 key reasons why your child's natural hair is dry.  First, let's clarify what I mean by dry. I do not mean dry in terms of how it feels after washing it. In that case, we have different categories: Wet, Damp and Dry.

When I say dry, I mean POST WASH DAY.

The L.O.C Method is a method of layering products to lock in moisture into #naturalhair. Remember, oil is not a moisturizer. Using water alone is not beneficial because it evaporates easily. You can also use the L.C.O method. L for Liquid, O for oil and C for Cream

Demystifying Leave-in Conditioner

Hello, hello ladies!

I’m back this Friday with another product to shine the spotlight on. I’m dishing the dirt on leave-in conditioner as requested by one of our readers ( hey Oreoluwa Adeyinka!). A great leave-in is the cornerstone of well moisturised and healthy hair, so pay a great deal of attention to the type you are using.

What is leave-in conditioner?
Leave-in conditioner is a type a hair care product that is applied to the hair and is designed to nourish, moisturise, protect and smooth the strand. It is not rinsed out. It can be in liquid or cream/lotion form.

Demystifying Fatty Alcohols

Hello Hello Ladies!

I got so much positive feedback on the Demystifying Cholesterol post that i'm considering doing a "Demystifying" series on various ingredients or products people want more information on. This week i'm taking a look at fatty alcohols.

When purchasing products we are often warned to avoid alcohols as they are drying to your hair. However alcohols can be categorised into two sections, good alcohols and bad alcohols. I want to elaborate more on the good kind you want in your products; fatty alcohols.

What are fatty alcohols?
Fatty alcohols are chemical compounds consisting of chains of carbon, hydrogen and hydroxide. They usually stem from  plants, animals and can be synthetically produced. They are distinct from all there other alcohols ( and the bad ones in particular) because are composed of 12 or more carbon  atoms which makes these compounds oilier, hence the term "fatty".

How to Test for an Effective Moisturiser/Leave-in Conditioner on your hair

Hello, hello ladies!

A moisturiser or leave-in conditioner is one of the cornerstones of a healthy head of hair. You are headed for breakage city if you don't have one in your arsenal.

Some leave-ins in my arsenal
The product junkie in me purchased the  African Pride Shea Butter Miracle Leave-In Conditioner recently. As I was thinking of how hyped I was to test it out, I thought I would share the testing process which all my leave-ins/moisturisers undergo.
