Is it safe to dilute my Hair Products?

Dilution of Hair Products is a common practice both in the salon and home environment. But is this common practice okay? What effects does this practice have on our hair and scalp? In this episode of Ask The Trichologist, we talk about this from a scientific view, and its practical effect on you and I

Ask The Trichologist is a show by African Naturalistas to answer your burning questions concerning Hair Loss and Shaft issues, and Scalp Disorders.

If you want us to answer your questions, ask them in the comment section, or send an email to att@africanaturalistas.com

Where does our Deep Conditioning Mayonnaise get its yellow colour from?

If you have come across or used our Deep Conditioning Mayonnaise, you would have noticed its vibrant yellow colour. If not, the picture below will let you know how it looks colour-wise.

Most Deep Conditioners are white, but ours is yellow, without the aid of any artificial colourant. This is because there’s a power ingredient in this product - Palm Oil. Some people call it Red Oil or Red Palm Oil

As will all know, palm oil ranges from very Dark Orange to Bright or Dark Red.

Red Palm Oil has been classified as one of the most nutrient-dense oils in the world. It is therefore no surprise that it is very good for the hair

Red palm oil is also rich in vitamin E and that benefits the hair by promoting cell growth of the hair follicles, which results in stronger hair. Vitamin E also decreases graying of the hair and hair loss. The carotenes in red palm oil is also responsible for the growth and division of cells and will prevent the hair from becoming weak and brittle, and this is just a tip of the iceberg

However, Palm Oil, on its own, is a very messy oil, and will stain every single thing it comes across. God bless you if try to use this oil on your hair, like the regular coconut oil. It will stain your bathroom, your towel, your face, your hair, everything it touches or smells.

So using this oil as an ingredient in the Deep Conditioning Mayonnaise was a genius idea to help you, get the best of it, whether you want to use it as a pre-poo or post-poo treatment. The Good news is that it will not stain anything because it is protected the healthy fats in the product.

So now that you have this information, whachyugondobourit?

You can start by clicking the link below to get our Deep Conditioning Mayonnaise and any or our other products?

6 STEPS TO PICKING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS FOR YOUR NATURAL HAIR

6 STEPS TO PICKING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS FOR YOUR NATURAL HAIR

We don’t all have the same hair type or hair needs. Even siblings do not have the same hair type or structure, that is why it is very important to know what to look out for when picking products for your hair. What works for Titi may not work for ChiChi. The primary purpose of needing to get hair products for your natural hair is to find what works for your hair and also, to be able to use them in the best way possible. Your hair in whatever stage has two major needs: moisture and protein. So, the products you use on your hair should be able to ensure that your hair is moisturized and protein-enriched (if your hair does not have any protein sensitivity).

Here’s a checklist that will help you make the right choice when purchasing hair products:

Pre Poo Hot Oil Treatment for easier Wash Day!

Hi Lovelies! Doing a Hot Oil Treatment before a full wash, greatly helps your hair in terms of reducing tangles by oiling the hair strands and enabling them to glide past each other rather than tangle up during your Wash Day Process. I normally do my own home produced hair treatment but this time around I bought one of these hand made all natural hair treatment online from the company Lush.

These come in a range of natural hand made products. The one I chose was the 'Hair Doctor. 'The ingredients include Coconut Oil,Jojoba Oil, Rosemary and Red Henna. All these infused together work to leave the hair feeling stronger and nourished and ready for the somewhat wear and tear process our hair actually goes through on every Wash Day. The Treatment comes attached to a wooden stick on which directions for use are clearly highlighted.

My hair was left looking and feeling amazing! Any Hot Oil Treatment will work a treat on your Natural Hair prior to washing. Give it a try if not already doing so!

Natural Hair Detox using Charcoal Shampoo and Conditioner.

Happy Tuesday Ladies! As naturals, we often find that our hair is prone to product build up. Once in a while, its a good idea to give your hair a little bit of a Detox.

Of late, Activated Charcoal has been all the rage in Skin and Hair Care. Activated Charcoal has the ability to draw out impurities from the skin as well as absorb oils. This makes it an ideal cleansing agent to leave your scalp clean and free from anything that could cause your pores not to freely grow out healthy hair.

I used Charcoal and Citrus Oil Detoxifying Shampoo by Hair Chemist Limited. This shampoo fights clogged pores by absorbing excess oils, dirt and grime that cause build up. I followed my shampoo with Bamboo Charcoal Detoxifying Conditioner. It contains Ginkgo Biloba and Green Tea. In addition to further removing Dirt and impurities, this Conditioner also helps to detangle hair while gently moisturizing the hair and adding body to it.

Just remember when doing a Natural Hair Detox, please do not over do it. This is a thorough cleansing and stripping of the scalp so hair can become dry if this is repeated often. When you feel that your hair has been subjected to build up,this treatment will definitely come in handy.

Enjoy the video Ladies and have a Blissful Day!

Dispelling the myth of expensive hair products

I was reading a blog post on naijasinglegirl, where a counsellor was blasting naturalistas, and one of his points was that it is poor people who wear their hair natural. In a bid to counter his stance, a commenter painted expensive natural hair products as high quality, and the more affordable one as being inferior ot them. In short, the more expensive it is, the more effective it is.

The part that jumped out at me was "Yea, there re less expensive brands in the market but don't we all love the best?" i.e. the best are the most expensive.

I was sad to read this comment, because being my industry, I know nothing could be farther from the truth. Following principles of economics, bigger brands like shea moisture should even be cheaper and more affordable than independent brands like African Naturalistas. And here’s why

  • They produce larger, and therefore have more access to more raw materials, at cheaper prices than independent brands
  • They have a larger customer base thereby leading to more sales, and therefore their overhead cost is greatly reduced in comparison to independent brands
  • They have better infrastructure because of good access to resources needed for manufacturing, and therefore production cost is next to nothing when compared to the massive revenue they generate

...And so on

But the irony is the case. They peddle their products at more expensive prices, raking in billions of dollars, and people erroneously think that they are better while the cheaper ones are inferior…. i.e. the cheaper ones which ideally have more justification to be expensive.

And therefore despite the high cost, because of this mind set, these expensive foreign brands keep selling and selling

Since this post is written on African Naturalistas, we would talk from our own point of view.

When I went natural, I realized that most of the complaints people made about natural hair was that the products were not as affordable as the ones they were using when they had relaxed hair.

The truth is that natural hair products can’t be as cheap as others because most of those other products are laden with cheap chemicals, petroleum products, and harmful ingredients that have no business being on our natural hair.

But we also know that though they can’t be ridiculously cheap, they don’t have to be overwhelmingly expensive. And that was the gap we came to fill… to let people know that they don’t have to break a bank to maintain healthy and beautiful natural hair.

So it’s quite heartbreaking when you try to fill this gap by doing the opposite and presenting people products at affordable prices, but they in turn discard your products as inferior, not because it doesn’t work for them or fails in effectiveness, not because it doesn’t look good or smell nice, but because they can easily afford it!

Even many of the raw materials in those products such as Shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and loads of others are all sourced from Africa, so what are we talking about here?

So now, we get to the crossroad

Do we, as independent brands increase our product prices so some people would stop assuming our products are inferior, and we in turn increase our profit margin (who doesn’t like plenty money?)

Or do we keep our cutting edge of affordability so everyone can be convinced that really, you don’t have to break a bank to maintain healthy natural hair?

One thing we know is this, when it comes to hair products, the effectiveness has nothing to do with the price tag on it, and more affordable products are in no way inferior. All you need to do is check the label, and read the ingredients, and see for yourself that all we say is true.

Throwback To Those Products We Used At The Beginning Of Our Natural Hair Journeys

The first challenge every newbie natural has to overcome is choosing the right  products. It is a major hurdle that needs to crossed as it tends to affect the direction of the entire journey. No matter what you say, products can either make or mar your journey. Whether or not your hair requires a lot of products to thrive is another matter entirely. The bottom line is, you need products.

Anyway, the other day, Glory/Flamelle on Instagram posted this photo of regular mayonnaise she used for deep conditioning and it just took me down memory lane.

Look what I made! Yes it's mayonnaise. You're probably wondering why I have this on my hair page. Well, that's because I did not eat it up, my hair did. Haha. As my hair has gotten longer (and the naira has grown weaker, sigh) I've found myself being a little tentative about trying out deep conditioners (I'm still on a quest to find the perfect one for my hair). Because all the ones I'd like to try are quite expensive now. 6-7k for a deep conditioner and I only get to use it twice? Otherwise I have to be quite stingy and my hair does not really get the benefits. The worst part is doling out all that cash and then the product turns out to be a fail. There will be tears. Lol! Don't get me wrong though, some of these products are really great and I still plan to try them. But one night while churning out home made mayo for dinner I thought hey! Just look at all that creamy goodness. This will be awesome for my hair! 🙈 So the next wash day I made this. Pros: - I don't need to skimp on it. I just slathered it all over my hair. All of that. 😁 - It's really inexpensive. - It's quite easy to make. - My hair was stronger yet still moisturized. Cons - Well, you're making it yourself. I'm not sure this is entirely a con but it might be on a lazy day. - It's a bit of a mess to clean up after. Lol! - Being that it's home made, it needs to sit in your hair for longer. So while a store bought deep conditioner may only need 10-15 minutes, you need this to sit for 45 minutes. Also needs to stay this long because you can't apply external heat since it contains eggs. You don't want to cook eggs in your hair. I think it was worth it. Can you make something totally edible just for your hair? #naturalhair #deepconditioning #flamellehairseries #diy

Frankly, the current exchange rate is gonna hit everyone at one point or the other and then we'll be forced to look inwards for alternatives.

As I mentioned earlier, this post took me down memory lane as I remembered some of the 'products' I used on my hair when I was clueless about products and before I became an ingredient ninja. Funny enough, I've never really been a product junkie but that's just by the way.

Some of which includes,

  • Mayonnaise
Just like Glory, I always had a jar of mayonnaise solely for deep conditioning. After shampooing and conditioning, I applied generous amounts on my hair and covered it with a shower cap. Good ol'DC. I didn't even know whether or not I was it was a protein or moisture-intensive treatment. All I knew was my hair was conditioned. Overtime, I outgrew it because I couldn't stand it anymore. I guess I had outdone myself.

  • Palm Oil
The first and last time I used palm oil was also at the beginning of my hair journey. It was such a messy job that I never used it again after then. Funny enough, palm oil is packed with lots of nutrients that beneficial for our hair. So, maybe I might still try it again with henna or something. Something strong and thick enough to absorb it's intensity. In the meantime, I've been using Palm Kernel Oil.

  • Eggs
Believe it or not, I used eggs just once. It didn't sit well with me because my hair isn't 4c and also because I discovered eggs in the ingredient list of the mayonnaise - the first time I actually read an ingredient list. So, I figured, I was killing two birds with a stone. I've not used it since then. Instead, I use henna every six weeks to strengthen my strands.

  • Baking Soda
I also used this just once during my trial and error period to clarify my scalp. I think I made a mixture with some water and used it. During that period, baking soda began to get some bad rep so I stayed away from it and replaced it with Apple Cider Vinegar. It's an excellent exfoliator though.

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Ever since I heard that our Goya olive oil isn't genuine, I stopped using it for my hair.

  • Avocado
I can't believe I tried this only once but I think I know why. Again, my hair isn't 4c so I don't have to go extra lengths to achieve soft hair. After that first time, I think I realised that there was nothing overly fantastic about it so I didn't have any course to use it again. Notwithstanding, it is highly recommeded.

  • Coconut milk
The first time I used coconut milk, it gave me the same result as a henna treatment - hard and stringly hair. Of course, I didn't know it was a protein treatment. But I used it for a few more times before I stopped althogether. I had to finish the jar. Plus, it was always a messy job. I didn't know how to handle it...then.

  • Yogurt
Another stressful endeavour. When it comes to DIY, I always like to exhaust my ingredients at the same time. All that refrigerating business is not it for me. As usual, over time, I found more convenient alternatives.

I think everyone has to go through that trial and error stage. There is a sense of fullfillment that comes with passing through those hurdles and coming out successful. In this instance, it means finally finding out what works for your hair and what doesn't and sticking to it.

Over to you!

Share some of those products you used but don't use anymore.

Love, curls and coils.

Introducing African Naturslistas Anti-Breakage Butter Lotion

As we all know, the only thing constant in life is change. And all the better, if the change is for the better.

At African Naturalistas, we have been making series of changes, which we would be announcing one after the other in the coming weeks. It would be nice for you to keep your eyes on this space, so you don't miss out.

And the first to be announced in this series of change is that we have phased out our Moisturising Butter Cream (Lavie life, Sweet Rosie, and Minty Jazz).

We are are sure you must have suspected that this was going to happen because it never went through the rebranding process like our other products.

In place of this, we have rolled out our new and creamy Anti-breakage butter lotion.

Not to brag, but you should really try this lotion. It's super creamy you almost want to eat it. And really moisturising. It is highly effective, if we must say so ourselves. The ingredients were chosen with your needs in mind which is majorly moisture, length retention (no breakage), sufficient emollients, sealant, amongst many other things.

Give it a try, and you would agree with us. You can purchase our Anti-breakage butter lotion and other products on africanaturalistas.com/ourstore or just simply click here.

Once you try them, let us know. We would love to have your testimonials.

African Naturalistas Vegetable Glycerine got Thumbs Up

It's one thing to give out products to people to use, test, and review. But it's another thing when as a start up business, you turn on your system to work, and you stumble on people talking about your products or services. And it is always great when what they are saying is something good. It always feels so good.

That's how we felt when we stumbled upon what Dabs of Naija Hair Can Grow had to say about one of our products, Vegetable Glycerine.

For The Product Junkies: How To Downsize Your Product Stash

Happy Friday everyone!

This post is dedicated to product junkies in recovery or attempting to do away with their lavish product lifestyle *wink*. I'm talking mission elimination. If you realised that you have too many products, or simply want to trim down and keep a standard few, keep reading to discover how you can do it without feeling like you just lost a part of you (lol)!

1. Function
The best question to ask is: Does the product work well, a.k.a does my hair love it? If not; toss, giveaway or sell it . If you can't decide whether or not your hair likes it, better to let it go. The aim of this exercise is to retain products that your hair absolutely loves. There is no use in keeping things that just barely work, or need a lot of "fixing" in order to be the bomb.

Might I suggest that this is a great opportunity to retain 2-in-1 products* such as bentonite or rhassoul clay (cleanser and conditioner),  oils which will work as sealants, scalp oils and preshampoo treatments, and conditioners which manufacturers say can be used as both treatments and leave-ins. Multifunctional  products will reduce your stash and save your cash.

2. Quantity
 When downsizing you want to limit your products to one in each category;
1 Sulfate free shampoo
1 Clarifying shampoo
1 Balanced conditioner
1 Moisturising conditioner
1 Protein conditioner
1 Leave-in conditioner/moisturiser
1 oil
1 heat protectant
1 setting lotion

3. Maintaining the current stash
Reducing your products is the easy part, the hard part comes in maintaining your now reduced stock. Implement a buy-to-replace policy. Only buy a new one when you are out of the existing type. E.g if I want a new sulfate free shampoo, I make sure I have finished the old one, or there is literally 2 or 3 cm left in the bottle.

Bonus tip. If you really, really want a new product ( and I mean REALLY), opt for the sample size as a tester. They are usually free or available at minimal cost. This has the effect of reducing the craving for a new product purchase whilst having little impact on the size of your stash. But just so you don't get out of hand with your product purchasing, set a limit. For example one sample size product every two or three months. And stick to it!

You will find that not only will you have reduced your stock, you will reduce on the amount of money you spend on products.

If all else fails and you can't let go, invite  hair friends over - they'll steal all your products from you, then you can go about point nr 2, and buy one of each category. You're welcome!

*except two in one shampoo and conditioner. This is really bad for your hair actually. I sense a demystifying post coming up
How do you go about downsizing your product stash?

Wash Day using Castile Soap on Natural Hair!

Happy Tuesday Ladies! On my Last Wash Day, I decided to try something new. After hearing all the raving about using Castile Soap as a substitute for shampoo, I decided to try it out and see what the fuss was all about.

Castile Soap is made from natural Organic Vegetable Oils including Olive, Coconut, Jojoba and Hemp Seed Oils. Castile Soap is strong enough to cleanse the scalp of excess sebum and product build up, but still gentle enough to not leave our hair stripped and dry. This makes it a great alternative to commercial shampoo.

Some key pointers to keep in mind while using Castile Soap are:

1. It is extremely Potent-If you use it directly on your hair or scalp it can leave your hair feeling extremely dry and straw like. It is always a good idea to mix a small amount of the Castile Soap with Water. A little soap goes a long way so you will not have to use too much.

2. It is not Colour Safe-This meaning that as Soaps are generally Alkaline in nature(High pH),if used on coloured/dyed hair it can open up the hair cuticle thus releasing the present hair dye quicker from the strands leading to faded hair colour.

3. You might want to balance out the pH of the alkaline soap with an acidic solution. You can do this by rinsing your hair afterwards with an acidic rinse such as Apple Cider Vinegar.

Enjoy the video ladies and feel free to try out this natural option to shampoo!

How to Balance Protein and Moisture Wash Days: A Practical Guide

Hey Ladies!

We are often told to balance our protein and moisture, and to do a hard protein treatment once per month or every six weeks. However the truth of the matter is that achieving that balance practically is still quite hard for some. Here is a realistic breakdown of how and when to use your different types of conditioners.

From left to right: moisturising conditioner, balanced conditioner, hard protein conditioner
