Tea Rinse for your Natural Hair

I am doing this post in response to aloted and coyintrovert’s question.
Tea Rinse is washing your hair with tea bag extracts. The caffeine penetrates the hair follicles to take their effect. Doing the tea rinse also adds shine to the hair. It strengthens the hair thereby reducing breakage

Chamomile Tea
from Science Daily
Nettle Tea
from Buzzle
Green Tea
from Walax Green Tea

Sage Tea
from Planet Green
Black Tea
from Healthy Living

How to use
You can put a concentrated tea bag extract in a spray bottle and spray it all over your hair. keep it in the hair for 10 to 30 minutes and rinse out later
The second way is to soak the tea bag in a kettle. This method requires more water than the previous. Make the water lukewarm and slowly pour over your hair after washing with shampoo and conditioner
I use the later method and believe me, as I am pouring the extract, I feel the difference immediately.

As we know, different Tea extract have different function on the hair. it is advisable that you know effect you want the rinse to have on your hair before you choose what to use.

Black Tea
The caffeine in most Teas will help stimulate hair growth. The more the caffeine, the higher possibility it has to stain/colour your hair. This is more applicable to black tea so you have to be very careful as too much caffeine can stunt hair growth. The best guide is to diliute as much as possible if you want to use Black Tea
It adds shine to the hair
They strengthen the hair thereby reducing breakage

Green Tea- Helps in combating hair loss and soothes the scalp and helps with scalp irritation

Nettle – This prevents and treats dandruff and helps blood circulation in the scalp so it can therefore be used during the winter period

Rosemary – This helps stimulate the scalp, prevent hair loss and grow hair

Chamomile – It accentuates the natural highlights of the hair

Sage – Helps reduce oil build on the scalp

From research, I realized that most people use Black Tea, which is what I use also, so I guess it is not that bad
I hope this has been useful for you

  1. I like tea rinses...

A tip is to collect the water in a bowl the when you pour it over your head. You can then use that same rinse over and over again. It is a good way of ensuring that your entire hair is properly coated.

    1. No, don't store it. It will grow bacteria. Use it up once you brew it.

  8. @ stelzz: Wow, nice. I am glad I could be of help. Let's see how it goes

@ Coy Introvert: Eeya, I normally post on monday evenings. That is the way I do it for now. So, you will do Black tea, abi?

    @ Blessing: Cool, *fingers crossed*

@ aloted: Lol, I realised a long time ago that you are very adventurous on your hair journey.
I don't think there is anything wrong with your method. I think the problem might be if you use concentrated black tea on your hair and not rinse it out. The excess caffeine might stunt your hair growth and stain your hair, since you use it on a regular basis.
But you don't use Black tea, so I don't think you should face that particular issue

  9. lol..i am actually flattered by your comment re adventurous.

i went natural in 2008 but i did not take care of my hair. As a result my hair is in need of TLC .I have now made a commitment to take care of my hair and grow my hair out as well. so yes o...i am on a mission, doing lots of research and what not. The one thing remaining is to start a hair blog but i will leave that to u and NN :) You guys are a wealth of info!

    Thanks for the tip again.

  10. I just learnt something new. Question, would you advise to use the tea rinse right after a deep condition?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for dropping by. As for me, tea rinse is the last part of my hair wash regimen. I deep condition, then wash my hair, do the ACV rinse and then finalise with the tea rinse, and it works for me. So, I guess the answer to your question is ye.

  11. Hi, came across your blog from Bella Naija (I think). Please can you provide more detail on preparing the tea rinse - for example, how many tea bags per how many litres of water or will just one tea bag do, if I am using 1.5 litres of water for example? I did my BC in March 2012 and desperately trying to grow my hair and also adopt a good hair care regime. Unfortunately I live in Abuja and wish I could attend one of the NITC events held in Lagos. I hope we eventually start organising NITCs for Abuja as, since going natural, I have started noticing more ladies with natural hair!

I didn't realise there was such a wealth of information from Nigerian hair bloggers too. I am so pleased to have discovered your blog. Great job!

  12. Hmm, it would be interesting if I could really confirm that you got this blog link from Bella Naija, as this blog isn't even affiliated with hers. Thanks for dropping by.

For the teas rinse, you don't need so many tea bags or water. Just on or two tea bags in a kettle would do. Once you are ready, you can add cold water to the tea water, to make it lukewarm.
Pour the mix on your hair, over and over again. And you should be fine.

I am glad this blog is useful to you.

    1. Hi, thanks for your response. A commenter on BN provided the link to your blog and another hair care blog. That's how I found you. :-)

I tried the tea rinse over the weekend. After my deep conditioning treatment, I rinsed out with warm water, then an ACV rinse. When I did the ACV rinse, my hair felt really soft but as I was doing the tea rinse, it felt different. It was almost as if my hair was becoming "harder" as I was doing the rinse! I used 2 black tea bags in a kettle, which i mixed with cool water until it became lukewarm. I am not sure if it is beneficial to my hair but I will try again without ACV rinse just to be sure.

      Thanks!

  13. Thank you so much for this post. I have all of the teas mentioned. I wonder... would it be ok if I combine teas such as nettle and chamomile together for my rinse?

I just want to start on my natural hair journey, so I'm no longer relaxing my hair and just waiting for the undergrowth to be a bit longer before cutting off the relaxed portion, can I start doing all these DC and tea rinse or should I wait till I cut off the relaxed portion? And what other advice do u have for natural hair newbies cause my hair is the stubbornest I've seen around. Thanks.
