Pre Poo Hot Oil Treatment for easier Wash Day!

Hi Lovelies! Doing a Hot Oil Treatment before a full wash, greatly helps your hair in terms of reducing tangles by oiling the hair strands and enabling them to glide past each other rather than tangle up during your Wash Day Process. I normally do my own home produced hair treatment but this time around I bought one of these hand made all natural hair treatment online from the company Lush.

These come in a range of natural hand made products. The one I chose was the 'Hair Doctor. 'The ingredients include Coconut Oil,Jojoba Oil, Rosemary and Red Henna. All these infused together work to leave the hair feeling stronger and nourished and ready for the somewhat wear and tear process our hair actually goes through on every Wash Day. The Treatment comes attached to a wooden stick on which directions for use are clearly highlighted.

My hair was left looking and feeling amazing! Any Hot Oil Treatment will work a treat on your Natural Hair prior to washing. Give it a try if not already doing so!

The Proper Way To Treat Your Natural Hair After A Protective Style

I recently took down my protective style - box braids - which I had on for about five weeks. As usual, it was getting really frizzy and I realized that it was time to take it down. Of course, the heat wasn't helping matters either.

During take down, I made up my mind that I was going to do it properly. Yes, there's a proper way to take down protective styles. In fact, the manner in which you do it determines how much length you would be able to retain. That's why a lot of people complain that their hair isn't growing meanwhile they are not retaining enough length. But that's another discussion for another day.

Say you have a weekly regimen like me that requires you to wash your hair every week. A five - week long protective style means that you haven't washed your hair in FIVE WEEKS!. There's no way you're going to retain length if you don't take your time to patiently take down your protective style and treat your hair afterward. You'll just be experiencing breakage and excessive shedding which you won't be able to control if yu are not careful.

So, how to do treat your natural hair after a protective style such that you reap its full benefits?

  • Detangle

Depending on the style you did, you will need to detangle. This can be minimal in the case of crochet braids for instance or extensive, for box braids. Whatever you do, make sure you are detangling along to reduce breakage. Plus, you also saving time.

  • Pre-poo/Hot oil treatment

As much as I'm not so much of a fan of pre-poo, it is very necessary to nurse your hair back to health after a protective style. Whatever you use for pre-poo, make sure you leave for an extensive time. Usually, overnight.

  • Clarify

After pre-poo, you will need to clarify your hair of the weeks of junk and product buildup that has settled in your scalp.

  • Do a protein treatment

I previously used to underrate the importance of protein treatments but recently I've begun to have a change of heart. Protein treatments strengthen your hair and repair any damage the protective style might have done to your hair.

  • Finish up with a moisture - intensive deep conditioner with heat.

After a protein treatment, it's only right to finish up with a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment to balance things out. Heat - direct with steaming cap or indirect with shower cap and body heat - is necessary to improve penetration of the deep conditioner into your strands.

  • Moisturize, Lock and Seal

Moisturize with your leave-in conditioner, lock in the moisture with your favorite oil and seal with a heavy butter.

With these steps, your natural hair should be back to normal in no time.

Does anyone go through these steps after taking down a protective style?

Doing Hot Oil Treatments for Dry Natural Hair

Doing Hot Oil Treatments for Dry Natural Hair

Harmattan season is here, and along with it comes dry and brittle hair. With a consistent hot oil treatment routine, you can avoid the issues of dry and brittle hair.

When doing hot oil treatments, it is important to choose oils that penetrate the hair shaft.  Some of these oils are Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Avocado Oil.  One or more of these oils will be the base of your hot oil treatment concoction. You can decide to mix other oils or just use the ones listed above. Click here to read about different oils and their benefits. When I make my hot oil treatments, I use:
Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Castor Oil and Sweet Almond Oil

There are two ways  that you can do a hot oil treatment:
  • Heated
When you do the heated method, you can apply the oil to either dry or damp hair.  Saturate the hair with your oil mixture, paying close attention to the ends and the scalp. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer or steamer for 15-30 minutes.

  • Non-Heated:
When doing a non-heated method, preheat your oil, by placing your oil mixture in a bowl of hot water. Do not directly heat the oil in the microwave or on the stove. Wet your hair with warm water to open the hair cuticles, then apply the oil to your hair, paying close attention to the ends and the scalp. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and a warm towel for about an hour.

When done with the treatment, make sure to shampoo your hair with a non-sulfate shampoo. This will prevent stripping off the oils. You can also co-wash if you choose.

Do you do hot oil treatments? What oils do you use?

This Natural Hair Treatment, That Natural Hair Treatment, HELP!

Hey people,

This is a post culled from Nappily Nigerian Girl. Sometimes you read natural hair blogs, and there's a lot of talk about Protein Treatments, Moisturizing Treatments, Henna Treatments, Blah blah blah Treatments, and it can get really confusing. I know to do Deep Conditioning (DC) treatments when I wash my hair, but heck if I know when to do one of these other treatments. For me, I wonder when people have the time to do all these treatments routinely when we have only 4 weekends a month. Well, when I saw this post on NNG's blog, I knew for sure that I would reblog it at some point. Enjoy.

Sometimes, natural hair treatments might look like a lot and with the thousands of different concoctions promising to make your hair long, strong and gorgeous, it's very easy to get confused and give up already!

However, there is a method to the madness. You don't really need to do all the treatments unless your hair needs it....well, that's how  I roll sha....lol! I feed my hair on demand.

So here's what natural hair treatments I do and when.

- I do a HENNA TREATMENT when I notice my hair breaks at the slightest touch. I have fine natural  hair so I need all the reinforcement I can get. Henna binds strongly to hair protein thereby strenghtening it from within. I also do a henna treatment to dye my grey hair (inherited) a nice shade of reddish gold.

- I do a HOT OIL TREATMENT and scalp massage whenever I notice my hair is dull, doesn't retain moisture well and tangles easily. Coconut oil, olive oil, palm kernel oil, grapeseed oil, and soya bean oil are amazing. I also do the treatment when my scalp feels really dry/itchy and prior to heat stretching. This includes the Indian oiling method which helps me retain moisture, improve the elasticity of my fine hair and prevent breakage.

- I do an ACV (apple cider vinegar) RINSE to rid my hair of product buildup, revive my coils and reset my hair to default. It also helps with itchy scalp, tangles and dull sheen.

- I do a PROTEIN TREATMENT with Aphogee, eggs, milk or gelatin when I know I'll be heat styling or manipulating my hair a lot to reduce breakage. I do these protein treatments in between henna treatments. They are temporary protein treatments but they help my hair.

-In any event my hair feels very hard from protein overload, I do an intensive moisture DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT.

-To get well defined coils in my wash and gos, twists or twistouts (I love curly ends that go boing!) I alternate between a HIBISCUS RINSE, moisturising deep conditioner and weekly cowash.

- For unexplained shedding, I do TEA RINSES. I prefer the moringa/ginger/black tea mix for my rinse.

- Just before I put my hair in a long term protective style such as braid/twist extensions or weaves, I do an OVERNIGHT MOISTURE DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT followed by a HOT OIL TREATMENT to make sure my hair is well hydrated so it doesn't dry out, tangle or break off during take down.

- MANSHANU (ghee as it's called in Nigeria) DEEP TREATMENT gives me the softest shiny hair but it's been a bit difficult to find until Providence brought a nice Fulani lady across my way who promised to supply me with the freshest, yummiest butter.....in addition to the creamiest 'fura da nono' ....millet ball in cows milk...it tastes divine served cold!

What a wealth of information, right? Are there any treatments that you do regularly? Which ones do you do and why?

Winter ready: Winter perfect deep conditioning mix for Natural Hair

Hi Naturalistas
I promised to show you my winter deep conditioning mix. Remember, as the cold turns up, you need to up your DC treatments. For this period I like to alternate between these two combos.

Mix 1

1. Egg - the white part will serve as a conditioner while the yolk will help with protein
2. Herbal essences bee strong strengthening intensive mask - just as the name suggests, it helps to strengthen your individual strands to prevent breakage. It has honey and apricot which is perfect for moisture and shine.
3. Glycerine - is a humectant that helps to retain moisture in your hair to eliminate dryness and breakage
4. Olive oil - seals in the moisture, helps prevent dryness which will in turn prevent breakage.

Mix 2

1. Avocado - helps to condition your hair. If your hair is already damaged and looking dry from the excess cold, this will help revive it.
2. Honey
3. Olive oil

As usual, mask your hair with the mix, use a heated cap/shower cap/steamer. Give it a couple of minutes depending on which measure you are using. Remember with your shower cap, you'll need to give it more time. Rinse it out and let it dry.

Remember to keep your heads high and rock your kinks with pride

How Natural Hair Transitioners Can Deal With Breakage

source

Hi ladies.

The most daunting aspect of transitioning is dealing with breakage. The clash between the old relaxed growth and the new kinky growth is inevitable. Instead of making a fuss over it, we're gonna try as much as possible to prevent it by dealing with it before it goes out of hand.

1. Do a Black Tea rinse regularly. This helps to reduce excess shedding and breakage as black tea is full of antioxidants that help hair to become stronger while maintaining its strength and elasticity to decrease breakage.

2. Keep your hair moisturized at all times as dry hair is prone to breakage.

3. Deep condition as often as possible. The importance of DC cannot be overemphasized.

4. Reduce the use of heat. Flat-ironing,blow-drying and the rest. Try to opt out for protective styles that do not require the use of heat.

5. Give your hair a hot-oil treatment. This softens the hair and minimizes breakage.

6. Pre-poo regularly as it minimizes breakage by helping your hair retain some moisture when you shampoo.

7. Wear protective styles regularly. The less manipulation, the better.

8. Protect your hair at night. Use either a satin scarf or a satin pillow case.

Alright ladies. There you have it.. Breakage can totally be handled.

How do you deal with yours?

Dear Natural Hair Transitioner...

Hello Everyone!

I'm so honored to be part of the AN team. I hope we can rub minds together and correct the misconceptions of Kinky hair.

Today I'm gonna be talking on Transitioning. You know; the longer more stress-free journey of going natural. Right! As a fellow transitioner, I'm gonna be giving tips on what to expect for those of you that would rather go that lane.

1. #DearTranstioner, the BREAKAGE is real!!!! I think this should be the most daunting, A mean you're dealing with two textures, there's bound to be a clash somewhere. Anyways, hot oil treatments and black tea rinses should be at your beck and call.

2. #DearTransitionier, protective styling is your friend. Trust me, you don't wanna deal with styling two hair textures. Your best bet is to hide it under weaves and/or braids until you're ready to big chop except you can handle it .

3. #DearTransitionier, frequent deep conditioning helps A LOT. This will help strengthen and soften your new growth, relaxed hair and prevent
 breakage.

4. #DearTransitionier, combing your hair after a while will become a hassle. You might not be able to run your comb through your hair as freely as you like. The new growth will prevent a smooth movement except on wash days. So please detangle gently from ends to root.

5. #DearTransitioner Growth is at a snail's pace. Do not expect to see your head filled with kinks overnight. It takes time and LOTS of patience.

6. #DearTransitioner, keep your hair moisturised with a water-based product and seal with natural oils.

Alright ladies there you have it. Transitioning isn't that hard.

What has been your biggest transitioning challenge?

Hot Oil Treatment on Natural Hair

Hi Ladies! Hope you have all managed to remain splendid and wonderful! Today am sharing with you my very simple Hot Oil Treatment. This treatment has helped me overtime to achieve a natural shine to my hair, strengthen my strands and reduce tangles and knots which has greatly help me in reducing breakage! Enjoy Ladies!

A simple hair growth and retention regimen

Hi Naturalistas

When using hair products, you should try to combine them depending on the specific results you want. Like you probably already know, I use natural ingredients for most of my hair needs. This is the combination I use specifically for hair growth and retention.

Castor oil: It triggers hair cells to produce hair

Aloe vera : Helps to prevent hair damage as well as hair loss. It also helps with new hair growth

Jojoba oil: Helps to induce hair growth

These are the 3 main ingredients in my regimen.
I usually add some coconut milk for protein, just to balance things up. It also helps to facilitate growth.

I mix them all up, massage it into my scalp, leave it for at least 30 minutes. To speed things up, I use a shower cap.
Wash it, use a leave-in-conditioner and seal with olive oil.
Olive oil helps to promote healthy hair rentention. It strengthens the hair, helps to increase the thickness and density. This will help prevent undue hair loss.
To get best results, you want to retain as much hair as you are able to grow. I also recommend using a good conditioner. I recommend herbal essences 'honey, I'm strong' collection.

Can you think of any other ingredients that could make it here?

Must haves for Natural Hair

Have you ever wondered what are the most important things or necessary things that you must have even if you can't afford all the products that you 'think' you need for your natural hair to be soft, grow and be like the ones you see on YouTube?

Well, I have, and trying to cut your coat according to your cloth is important, so the following should be in your hair wardrobe

1. Olive oil: I don't need to start rambling again about the beauty and wonder of this amazing oil. Even if you're confused about what and what to get, this should be on your top list, and should never be found wanting or else, you'll live to tell the story.

2. Castor oil: you should have this mixed with Olive Oil in a 3:1 ratio as this helps to stimulate hair growth. and it doesn't cost much either.
Please note that the method of processing is important as this serves as an important guideline as to what will work well for your hair. This also applies for Olive oil too. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is usually preferred, and it should be cold pressed. That way, you're sure your oil has not passed through heat, and some damages have not been done or in a chemistry language, some important bonds have not been broken.

3. Honey: This is cheap, and you can find this in a store, be it home or abroad, just like a naturalista stated, she uses it as a Deep conditioning treatment(DC).

4. Jojoba oil: We all know the wonder of this oil and its wonder in our hair as it mimics or rather produces the same oil our skin produces.
P.S: The advantages of having all these oils once again includes the fact that you could do a hot oil scalp treatment and cover with satin bonnet. You could also sleep on a satin pillow case if you can afford that.

5. Satin bonnet/scarf; Now this is the aha! moment. This is also a MUST have as you need to cover your hair every night before going to bed. most especially since you would have sprayed it with oil and water. You tend to rock styles everyday, and you need to keep your twists intact. Even if you don;t have twists on, you don't want your hair drying out on a rough pillow or staining the whole bed due to the oil residue in your hair.

6. Water: cheap and easy. A must. In fact, this should be on your dressing table, your centre table. or your dinning table to remind you that you need to sprinkle your hair with water.

7. A good shampoo and a good conditioner: Well, this isn't a must have but at home, you could use Dudu Osun while abroad or even at home still, you could get a shampoo without sulfate and Herbal essence conditioner. It has so many labels eg for color treated hair, for volume, for dry hair, for breaking hair etc, so you can choose the one you want out of all.
This shouldn't be more than N1500 depending on where you get it anyway

8. Coconut oil: I don't have this though, but its not that expensive either. In fact, the tutorial for the whole coconut oil making process is available here

9. Teabag: This can be any tea bag, and I mean any, including lipton or toptea. Green tea isn't a bad thought either.

10. Styling product e.g Cantu Shea butter pomade for hair dressing: When you don't know what style to do to your hair after washing and you need to get a good twist done for the main time which doesn't require any hair gel including ecostyler gel, you can use Cantu Shea butter pomade as it helps to make and keep twists, adds shine and is soooo light on hair. You will have no problem at all, and when you want to have that dreadlocks kind of look, you can get it using this butter. I've tried it before. All you need to do is leave your twists longer than one week before twisting out. That's if you wanna twist out though.

So, with all of the above, I can say I've mentioned things that you can obtain easily without much stress.
thinking of combs and other styling products for natural hair? Watch out for this space!!!

How Olive Oil helps your natural hair

Source
I've always had dry hair, and no matter how much I try to moisturise,
the hair just never retains the moisture, I've always heard of olive
oil and how its really good for your hair and skin, so I decided to
try it out.

The first deep conditioning i did this year was the one using Olive oil.

Steps

1. Pour a small amount of the oil in a small bowl
2. Heat it a little, not-too-hot-to-touch temperature
3. Section you hair and apply from the root
4. Even it out to the rest of the hair
5. Cover with a shower cap or plastic bag for not less than 45 mins
for effective results. (You can do this at night or during the
weekend)
6. Remove and wash with your shampoo and conditioner

My Hair Observations

1. I didn't have to put so much oil on my hair during the week
2. Hair was very soft
3. Hair felt good
4. Easier to comb and
5. There was Shine

I know some people add honey to their own olive oil treatment and if
it works for you, you can add it if you want, plus the results may
differ due to factors like hair type, texture etc. but here are the
benefits of Olive Oil to the hair.

1. Helps with frizzle control
2. Less Dandruff
3. Gives more shine
4. Extra softens the hair
5. More Moisture
6. The overall health of your scalp
7. It can prevent and cure hair loss

This is a deep conditioning treatment I would recommend and one that
is not leaving my treatment list any time soon!
