Five useful resolutions for a healthy natural hair journey this year

Hi Naturalistas
Happy New Year!
If you are one of those that loves to jump on the band wagon of making resolutions, it's a brand new year and it is time to start afresh. As a matter of fact, making resolutions can help you reevaluate yourself and for your hair, it can be that time to take stock of what works and what doesn't.
From my point of view, it could be a time to push a few good habits in - switch your regimens and add a few new things you've been dying to try.

Here are a few ones I thought might interest you:

1. Make a decision to eat healthy and drink lots of water
The health of your hair depends a lot on the availability of those nutrients that can help nurture it, this  depends on the foods you eat. You also need to take a lot of water to supply the tissues of your body with enough fluid to function.

2. Moisturize your hair more frequently
Moisturizing your hair will prevent damage and unnecessary breaking due to dryness. Keep a spray bottle within reach and infuse your hair with products that help to retain moisture.

3. Deep condition more
Deep conditioning helps to strengthen your hair while driving the products straight into each strand. Depending on the products you use, your hair can achieve so much. You can use this method to up moisture retention as well, be sure to find products that act as humectants.

4. Protect your hair properly before you sleep
Even when you want to take a quick nap, learn to put your hair away so your hair doesn't rub on hard surfaces. It is very essential that you leave your hair on surfaces where they can easily slide through (satin, silk) to avoid the excessive drying out and pulling.

5. Research
Spend some time to research on all the products you put on your hair. Make a decision to not just do whatever everyone is doing, but to spend time to find out what works for your hair type.

I hope you all have a very beautiful journey this year

Remember to keep your heads high and rock your kinks with pride.

Real Life Natural Hair Talks: The loc'd image

Hi Naturalistas

Have you people noticed that it is usually people in the entertainment industry that loc their hair (ESP the guys)? I couldn't help noting this. Does it have to do with the fact that most of them are already people that are daring enough to follow what makes them happy?  I mean they are usually people that do not want to conform nor do they care about others think of them. They probably had to speak up and tell their parents that they will follow their own dreams and have gotten used to not having to bother about what people want of them. Or does it just have to do with the fact that they are self employed anyways? Let's face it, more often than not people have one or two opinionsabout  people with locs. Some employers will not even give them a chance to see if they can work the job just because of their hair.
I think people can even accept to overlook ladies with locs these days because they can be dismissed as braids and twists but with the guys it is a different story entirely. At least there is progress in the way people are now perceiving locs in the society which is quite different from what it used to be, but we still have a long way to go.
What is your opinion, why do you think people readily stereotype people with locs and what do you think of these stereotypes?

Coloring my natural hair

Hi Naturalistas

I have finally found a way to bring this post to you. I have been coloring my hair almost as long as I have been natural, and one of the questions that comes up often has been regarding my colored natural hair - the process, the products, the effects, etc. Obviously, I couldn't put it all in one post, so I will be making subsequent ones on the subject - more like the progress and the effects.
I must warn you, I am not an expert. I like to experiment with my hair a lot and that is what I did with this. The great part is that I can tell you about my experience and you can learn from it.

Enjoy the video and do not forget to subscribe.

Real life natural hair talks: Locs vs. the fro for guys

Hi Naturalistas
From my experience, I noticed that people usually have their preferences when it comes to guys keeping their hair. So the big question today is: Does it really matter how the hair is being kept?

                                              Source

I particularly noticed that some people would frown at locs but they don't mind a guy that keeps his hair but gets regular braids. But have we ever paused to wonder why it really matters?
What are the factors that actually fuel these preferences?
Societal norms? The look itself? Or just particular beliefs?

I know for some people it is either short hair or long hair and I have seen ladies that love them both. However, I noticed that for some, the fact that the guy doesn't have to deal with the hair every time (comb it often) makes all the difference. And for some, the most defining factor is that locs just look more masculine as opposed to afro.
When it comes to hair on guys, believe me, it can be a whole debate for days with plenty of opinions.
I would like to hear, what is your take?

P.s. I would like to particularly add this. I love to open the room for these kind of discussions because the last time I had a face to face one, it was really great. I noticed that sometimes, people do not understand the challenges that they could deal with based on their choices, but discussing them and getting other people's views helped them to better arm themselves to deal with them and even help them appreciate their choices more.

Like I always say, it is always more interesting if we get a lot of different opinions, that notwithstanding, if it is something that doesn't interest you, just move on to other posts that might interest you on the site.

Here's a nice way to add some pizazz to boring scarfs.
Not that mine was boring, I just thought it'd be nice to show the little trick, even though I couldn't find a boring one to use :)
Enjoy!

Real life natural hair talks: Men, physique and natural hair

Hi Naturalistas
Still continuing our discussion with regards to men and natural hair. We are still having the men's edition on the naturallure spotlight so be sure to send in your suggestions.

                           Source

Onto today's discussion. Do you think all men can pull off big hair?

I personally think that it looks a lot better when the guy has a little bit of muscles. He doesn't need to look really chiseled but I just think if he looks skinny or fat and tries to pull off the style, he may start looking feminine and if this is not what they were aiming for, it might be a big miss.

I also think you have to be really confident as a guy to pull off the look. I especially think that guys that go for the look usually try to score on sexy, so every other part just must add up.

What's your opinion, do you think body structure matters?

Naturallure Spotlight: Uti Nwachukwu

Hi Naturalistas
I am delighted to bring Uti's pictures today.
Uti is a model, TV host and Actor.
He's been on the popular Big brother Africa show as a contestant representing Nigeria.
In 2010, he won the 'big brother Africa all stars' special edition.
He has been carrying his locs for such a long time and it doesn't look like he'd be getting rid of it anytime soon. He knows how to rock his locs.
Enjoy his pictures.

Real Life Natural Hair Talks: Would you make your man's Natural hair?

Hi Naturalistas
Last time when we had these talks, it got a little touchy. Check it here if you missed it.
The idea is just to discuss what happens in reality and I really do not mind a collection of opinions.
It is not about saying what is better, should be or not be. It is just about those things that do really happen.

                                               Source

Today's topic might head in that direction as well because it is quite related. However, I am really hoping that everyone sees this with an open mind and it doesn't really need to turn into an argument. Share your opinions and try to see what you can pick from others, if you can't just let them, please.

Today we'll be talking about when your man needs you to make his hair.
I know it can be fun to spend a relaxing weekend making his hair. I would especially love it. It feels like a nice way to spend time together. I'm already loving the thought of it :)

However, let's not forget this can feel like a job. Seriously, would you mind?
Or would you be like "he can keep his hair, as long as he doesn't bother me with it?"
What's your take?

Naturallure Spotlight: Bryan Okwara

Today's spotlight is on Bryan Okwara.
Bryan is a Nigerian model and actor. He won the Mr. Nigeria 2007 and has since moved on to acting along side music video cameos.
I was trying so hard to find pictures where all the attention would be concentrated on his hair and none on his nice body, but it was so hard. It is what it is, Bryan is one fine man. Sorry ladies, I can understand if you drool, I tried to help but it was just too hard.
I know some people are saying "Thank God she didn't succeed" :)
Enjoy.
