Trichology Corner: How Wigs are slowly killing your Hair

It is the new trend for ladies in this day and age to wake up in the morning, go through their daily beauty routine, whip out the wig, cover their head, head out of the house, work for their daily bread, come back home at night, take the wig off, and go to bed… every single day… and the cycle continues!
Now, we are not here to talk about your routine or lifestyle choices. We are just going to take out one element from that cycle and elaborate on it… the wig!
Why the wig?
It is simple
It is convenient
It is versatile… you can basically change your looks every single day of the month
It covers secrets… if you know what I mean
It is affordable… in most cases
Anyone can use a wig, whether your hair is healthy or not, natural or not… as long as you are alive and breathing, and can basically walk around with your head intact, you can use a wig. All you need to have is a head!
So why on earth are we writing about the wig on the trichology corner?
Simple! Like many other things in life, we have begun to abuse this interesting invention, and it is beginning to set many women back on their journey to healthy hair. To make it worse, many people don’t even know their wigs are the source of their problems in life with their hair!
I handle these cases very regularly. There the lady is, sitting in right front of me, paying for her hour, complaining, and the major source of her problem is right on her head!
So why do we frown at the constant use of wigs, as hair and scalp specialists
Any source of constant friction around your edges is bad for your hair! Many women now put on and take off their wigs countless times during the day. They adjust, readjust, and set it well to look good. To top it up, this is done every single day. We forget that the inner parts of wigs don’t have smooth satin or silk surfaces. They are basically rough on our thin and fragile edges. The effect of this constant friction on each strand might not be seen by our physical eyes like when we swipe cutlass on wet grass, but the results is always evident months down the line.
Long and short of the story…
Constant wigging causes Traction Alopecia!
If you had Traction Alopecia, constant wigging will make it worse, and your hair will recede further. If you didn’t have Traction Alopecia, constant wigging will start you on the journey to Traction Alopecia, and that is something you don’t want to deal with
So am I saying wigs are bad? Definitely not. But wigs are supposed to be buffers for your hairstyling options, once-in-a-while look changers, etc. It is surely not to be used every single day, as a hairstyle alternative, nor something to cover up for our laziness.
So if we care about the health of our hair, let’s develop better attitudes towards wigs. They are to be used, and not abused!

Trichology Corner: How Crochet Hairstyles are slowly killing your Hair (2)

Thank you for staying tuned to this column and this topic in particular. On last edition of Trichology corner, we mentioned how crotchet hairstyles can damage your hair. If you missed it, click here.
Now that it has been established, we now know that crotchet hairstyles can create holes in your hair shafts, and even if the holes don’t weaken them, which they will, the holes will cause other damages.
So how do we prevent these damages from happening to our hair shafts if we really love to crochet our hair? Well, we have heard the statement “too much of anything is bad.”
We see ladies go to the salon, take down one crochet braid, and immediately, wear another crochet hairstyle, after washing and conditioning their hair.
The first thing we can do to prevent this damage is to reduce the rate at which we wear crochet hairstyles, if we must wear it at all. You can wear it for a longer time, in order to reduce the rate of manipulation, and then reduce the rate at which it is done. Twice or thrice a year is enough, in order to give poking our hair shafts a break.
Another way to prevent crochet hairstyles damage is to do a protein treatment, in order to give our hair strands more strength, and possibly plug holes temporarily. We can do this after we take down the crochet, or at regular intervals of once in three to six months. Please note that doing a protein treatment too often is bad for our hair strands.
Anyone who is in love with crochet hairstyles should regularly check their hair for damages, and then trim regularly so the existing damages don’t further damage the hair strands.
Trichology Corner: How Crochet Hairstyles are slowly killing your Hair (1)

It has been a very long time since we brought you an edition of Trichology corner. We are working on resuming this column full time on the blog.
Many of us are familiar with several scalp disorders, such as all forms of hair loss, itchy scalp, scaly scalp, and many more. But when it comes to hair shaft disorder, our knowledge is almost nil. Sometimes, it is this lack of knowledge that makes us to carry out some harmful practices on our hair strands.
Crochet hairstyles have been the rave of the moment for about four years now, and it’s no more a moment, more like a season. It has been largely accepted because it is a convenient alternative to weaves and box braids for a lot of people. If my guess serves me right, I think crochet hair styles will not be going away any time soon, and this is where we need to be careful.
Crocheting our hair requires us to pass needles through our hair strands over and over and over again. Many times, these needles pierce through our hair shaft (hair shaft is the appropriate term for what we generally call hair strands).
So the analysis of this is very straight forward. Take a new piece of handkerchief, and try to rip it off with your both hands. Almost impossible. Right? Now, take that piece and pierce it with a nail once. You will see the damage a big hole has caused to it. Now, keep piercing it over and over and over again. I’m sure you can imagine how weak, worn and torn the piece of handkerchief is now. Imagine if you try to rip it off. Very easy. Right? This is because the handkerchief has been weakened in its internal structure. It is therefore not difficult for it to be torn.
In the same vein, constant piercing of our hair shaft by the crotchet needle will weaken the structure of your hair, and damage your hair shaft, making it more prone to split ends, weak shafts, and breakage, and many cases eventually leading to faster breakage. In fact, the hair shaft scenario is much more serious than the case of the handkerchief because the handkerchief is just a flat piece, while the hair shaft is a cylindrical piece, consisting of three layers when cross sectioned i.e. the cuticle, medulla, and cortex, and the crochet needle will pierce through the three layers, in most cases, while in some cases damage the hair cuticle alone.
Unfortunately, holes in your hair shaft are not what you can see with your physical eyes. You will require the aid of a trichoscope, and it will usually be discovered by a hair specialist, not by your regular stylist
What can you do to prevent this from happening, especially if you love crocheting your hair? Join us in the next edition of trichology corner, where we would talk about this.
Is there any scalp disorders, hair shaft disorders, or any hair science topic you would like us to trash out on Trichology corner? Please, let us know in the comment section.
