3 Signs Your Hair Is In Need Of A Deep Conditioning Treatment

As a member of the natural hair gang, there is no telling the number of times you have people say you need to deep condition your hair for so and so number of hours or the type of deep conditioning treatment you need to do, including DIYs and so on. We are not in any way against any of that, however, how do you know your hair is in need of a deep conditioning treatment? What are the signs that your hair gives to let you know it’s in need of some TLC? That’s what this article is about. Sit tight.

What are Deep Conditioners?

Deep conditioners are like the regular conditioners but are thicker and contain other ingredients that are able to penetrate the hair shaft. Their job is to repair damaged hair and/or nourish in between the hair cuticles. The instructions for deep conditioners usually require that you leave them on for longer periods than the regular conditioners. However,

5 STEPS TO FRIZZ-FREE HAIR

We can all agree that having natural hair has so many advantages and no real disadvantage, only challenges. One of those challenges is frizzy hair. Frizzy natural hair is quite unattractive and you may think that it is inevitable due to how often it occurs and how many people have now taken it as the new normal. Frizzy hair can be handled and avoided completely.

What is frizzy hair?

Your natural hair gets frizzy when the cuticle layer of your natural hair is raised. A raised hair cuticle allows more moisture to pass through and swells the hair strands, resulting in dehydrated and dry hair. When your natural hair is dry, it appears frizzy rather than smooth and well-defined. Unfortunately, curly natural hair is more prone to frizzing than straight hair.

What causes frizzy hair?

Now we know that frizzy hair is a result of dehydration in your natural hair. So, what are the main causes of dehydration in natural hair which result in frizz?

WHY ISN'T MY HAIR GROWING?!

When you see natural hair queens on Instagram or on TV, you have dreams of having such beautiful, long hair. You see these women twist and curl and manipulate their hair into forms that can only be explained by natural hair pros. They may even be the reason why you decided to start the natural hair journey in the first place. But you’ve been growing your hair diligently for years now but your hair is not mid-back length yet. You don’t know why even though you follow all the instructions the manufacturer wrote down.

You are stuck with the same hair length. You now believe that your hair has stopped growing, the same way people stop growing when they reach a certain age. The good part is, you have a faint glimmer of hope that you are wrong and your hair will still grow. We are here to tell you that faint glimmer is about to bloom bright and beautiful!

Your hair grows about half an inch every month and about 6 inches of newly grown hairs every year. That’s an amazing amount of growth. So why does it seem like it’s not growing? Why doesn’t your hair look like the queens of natural hair on TV and Instagram?

Myths About Dandruff

The only thing that spreads faster than a disease are the myths and lies that surround it. I remember the Ebola pandemic and how people that sold salt made so much money because it was rumoured to cure the deadly disease.
We have heard and read all sorts about dandruff, its causes and how it can be treated. Some of us believe a lot of the myth inspired treatment without it curing anything!
Today, we are going to expose some of these myths,so you can rest easy or at most look beyond the myths for a lasting and working solution.

1. Washing your hair daily gets rid of dandruff.
Big Lie! Washing your hair everyday without doing the LOC or LCO could leave your scalp irritated and dry which makes your scalp even prone to dandruff.
2. Dandruff is contagious
Dandruff is a scalp disease not a cold or std! Dandruff is not contagious in anyway! You are at risk of getting dandruff, if only you haven't been treating you scalp well. So, you had better stop avoiding or giving that young lady the " don't come close" attitude just cause she has dandruff.
3. Your hair breaks because you have dandruff.
Unhealthy scalp, stress or poor diet are the major causes of breakage and not dandruff! I am not saying dandruff can't cause your hair to shed but I'm saying it's impossible for dandruff to be the only factor responsible for your breakage!
4. Dry scalp is the major reason for dandruff.
Dry scalp has very little to do when it comes to dandruff because dandruff is caused by a fungal growth on the scalp.
5. Dandruff is only in the air during harmattan.
We suffer from dandruff due to lots of factors, most especially our hair and scalp hygiene. So whether it's the harmattan, dry or rainy season, if you do not have a good hair hygiene, you get a visit from this fungal affliction soon.

These are a few myths that I know but I am very sure lots of us have got plenty especially in the cure department , please do not be afraid or too stingy to share.

Have a great week!!!

Are You Struggling with Your Hair or Your Child's Natural Hair?

Struggling with Natural Hair DiscoveringNatural African Naturalistas
By DiscoveringNatural
All naturalistas have struggled with their natural hair one time or the other. Here are some tips that can help you if you find yourself struggling with your hair or your child's natural hair.

Ask yourself, "Why are you natural?" If it is for the aesthetics, then you will easily fall back to perm. It has to be more than the visual look and appearance, it has to be for a greater reason.
Think about the reasons you decided to embark on this journey and if all those reasons are still important to you, don't give up. Join a natural hair forum or a meetup in your area where you can share your questions and concerns with naturals who've gone through what you're going through. Watch YouTube videos, find someone who has a hair texture similar to yours and implement parts of their regimen into yours until you find out what works for you. It's not easy, but it's worth it... And it does become easier with time

Be patient with your hair. You will have a few trials and tribulations before you actually figure out what works for your hair. Don't worry cause once you achieve that perfect twist out or Bantu knot out you will see it was all worth it

Don't look at other naturals hair and get depressed because your hair is unique and embrace your own texture find what works for you. And remember having natural does not mean you don't have to take care of your hair because I found out it takes a little more effort to care for my hair now that I am natural

Use YouTube to change up your look.

Think outside the box with styling and product selection... and remember that it's greater than just a manageability or convenience issue- it's an identity thing!

Have Patience

My natural hair journey to bra length

I know we have all heard lots of hair resolutions for the new year, some of us even have a few of our own. Well, for me, my major and only hair resolution is to take care of my hair so much, I would be bra length by the end of the year.

I can barely pack a bun at the moment but I trust God, I know there is nothing impossible for my God. I am not planning to sit down and just wait for some magic, I have an outlined plan I'm going to be working with during the cause of the year to achieve my hair resolution for the year and I thought to share my plan with you guys, so I know what you all think and am also hoping you would share yours, so we could steal one or a few ideas from one another.
             Outlined Plan
DAILY
I am going to moisturise daily, apply castor oil to my edges and sides and make sure not to go to bed without my satin cap.
WEEKLY
I would co wash, deep condition, massage and finger detangle weekly.
MONTHLY
Mud wash, clarify, protective style and hot oil treatment.
8 WEEKS
          Protein treatment and steam
6 MONTHS
Get rid of split ends by trimming
OCCASIONALLY
             Flat iron and blow dry.

I hope it's an ok plan? I would love to know what you all think and how you plan to achieve your hair goals.

Remove the Kinks from your Mind!

Happy Tuesday Ladies! In the midst of the Natural Hair Movement, there is a Divide that is hovering in the Background. Hopefully it stays in the Background and never gets to enjoy the Centre Stage. This Divide is fed by the preference for a softer and more defined Curl Pattern. While not all naturals feed this Troll, there are sadly a few of us who do. And much like with anything that has affected us as Black Women, we need to put it to rest so that our Wonderful Natural Hair Movement does not fall into chaos along clearly divided lines amongst ourselves.
In this short video, I take a view at some of the cracks that if not tended to now, will definitely put our movement in Chaos.
Enjoy the video Lovelies, and don't forget to walk like a Champion Today, and every day going forward!

How to Stretch Your Natural Hair... Without Pain

We all see the advice on natural hair websites, blogs, forums, and more: STRETCH YOUR NATURAL HAIR. Of course, the reasons why we're stretching our natural hair are for minimal tangles, styling purposes, and easier management. But let's face it. Sometimes wanting to stretch your natural hair can induce a little bit of pain. This is especially so if you get migraines like me. In the past couple of weeks, the migraines have been quite severe, and since I've been leaving my hair out, having to keep it stretched at night has been stressful. I was on Instagram last week and saw a beautifully gorgeous head of afro hair that had been stretched out using threading. I loved the look of her hair, but seeing the thread just made my migraine worse!
Source

My stretching methods are usually 4 to 8 twists, plaits or twisted bantu knots. I used to flat twist for stretching, but I've kinda dumped that method for no reason. Anyway, with the headaches I've been getting, I've wondered about painless ways to keep your natural hair stretched.

  1. RELAX - No, I don't mean you should relax your hair. What I mean is that you should relax the tension with which you're stretching your hair. For instance, when twisting or threading, don't make them too tight. Making your twists, or braids tight could not only be painful, but they can cause scalp injuries, hair breakage and thinning edges.
  2. REDUCE THE HEAT - If your preferred method of stretching your natural hair is by blowdrying, reduce the amount of heat applied directly on your head. You can keep the temperature setting on your blowdryer on LOW or MEDIUM heat.
  3. WRAP IT - While searching for information for this topic, I ran into Discovering Natural's video on How to Wrap Natural Hair - I think I will definitely be trying this one out.

  4. PINEAPPLE IT - If you have longer hair, all this requires is putting your hair in a high ponytail/puff and wrapping the hair with a scarf. Although I wonder how the ends of the hair will be stretched...
I was already at work but this is what pineappling kinda looks like, just add a scarf to cover the base.
So there, you have it. These are my picks for easier painless ways to stretch your natural hair. How do you stretch your hair, if you do?

So you want to relax your natural hair...

A few weeks ago, I talked about my Hairstory and why/how I decided to go natural. Like a lot of people, my relaxed hair being weak with stunted growth (mostly due to improper or lack of hair care), caused me to make the decision to go natural. It's been 8 years since I stopped relaxing my hair. In these 8 years, I have seriously thought about relaxing my hair maybe once or twice.

shrinkage, natural hair, relaxed hair
Source

The main reason why I chose not to go through with it was because it felt like it would be such a permanent decision. Of course, it really wouldn't be permanent as some people have gone back and forth between relaxed and natural hair. However for me, it's been such a long time since I had relaxed hair, that I feel that going back there would be a very drastic and huge change. That's just not a decision that I would feel comfortable with at this time.

A friend of mine who started going natural last year usually complained about having difficulty with styling her hair, and that it wasn't growing as quickly as she would hope. She recently decided to go back to relaxing her hair though (and for some reason, was worried that I would chastise her). Because I knew that she had experienced more difficulty with her hair in its natural state, I completely understood her decision. But when I asked her how she felt, she said she felt weird and naked.

Her answer prompted me to write this post. If you have been having difficulty or been bored or less than enthused with your natural hair, and are considering relaxing, be sure to question your motives and really understand the reason for the decision you're trying to make. It's very important to be sure that you're deciding for yourself, and that it's not something you will regret. I would suggest trying one of the temporary hair straightening systems to test it out for a week or two. If you still feel strongly about relaxing your hair, then you can go through with it.

Have you thought about going back to relaxers since you went natural?

Six tips on how to survive watching a natural hair tutorial video

Source
I know I sound a tad dramatic, using the word ‘survive’ in the title of this post. But you will agree with me that many times, we feel inadequate when or after watching youtube videos, or trying to follow a tutorial on youtube. They may even seem a necessary evil we can’t do without, especially if we are not so blessed with hair care skills. So here is how to go through this experience without losing our head in the process.

Focus on only what matters
Ignore the makeup, how her lips are so cute, how her earring is so fine, her skin is so fresh, her bathroom, kitchen or whatever video location is so neat. Forget all those things. They are just makeup for the video, paparazzi for the cameras. Don’t begin to feel adequate because of something that is not real. Focus on what matters, which is the hair itself.

Know your limitations.
Don’t try to achieve a style that only heat-straightened hair can achieve, using your normal natural hair. You will only get poofy version of the hair style. But if poofy is what you are gunning for, then be my guest. What I am trying to say is know what the youtuber has done to her hair before she started the tutorial, and make sure your hair is fairly in the same condition, in order to avoid disappointments.

Don’t be jealous.
So what her hair is long down to her waist, and yours looks like a foam that rat has punched holes into? So what her curl pattern is so eye-popping while your looks like the body of SpongeBob square pants. Remember that she is not your hair mate, which is why she is on youtube, and you are not, lol. What I am trying to say is that she has been on the journey for long, and if you are consistent in caring for and pampering your hair, it will end up being the envy of every eye. So instead of being jealous, focus that energy on your hair

How fun is the after party?
Wait! Hold on! So you have seen this style you like on youtube, and you can’t just wait to try it out. But pause a bit, and think. How will that hairstyle fair, once you step out of your house? What effect will humidity have on it? Will your hair suddenly go from a Tracy Ellis Ross to a Whoopi Goldberg, once it sees the light of day? How about at night time? Will that hairstyle survive the night? Are you comfortable spend two hours and 100 bobby pins on a style that will only last for 2 hours, or even 2 minutes, depending on humidity? Think before you make that decision. Remember many youtubers make up, wear beautiful earrings and dresses, shoot the video, and then that is the end. They probably just go to bed afterwards, and sleep. And later, shoot another video… maybe… I don’t know… I’m not a youtuber… I’m just saying. They don’t tell you what happens afterwards, they don’t show you the picture of the hair when they step out, how many pins or hair strands fell out of place, if the curl unravelled or did not clump again 30 minutes later. Please, consider all these before making your decision.

It will never be exact.
Now read, and read carefully. In fact, if you haven’t read anything I have written since. Read this one. You will never achieve the exact hairstyle you are trying to copy. You might be close, or even very close to achieving it, but it will never be exactly the same, so don’t shoot yourself in the foot when it happens. Your bangs might be a bit bigger or smaller, your part might be more upwards, or tilted to the right, it just will never be the same. And here is why. Your hair is different from hers, your density is different, thickness is different, your hair-parting skill is different, the shape of your head is different. Every single thing is different, unless you are her identical twin, and I bet that even if that were the case, something will still be different. So why on earth do you think you can get that same style? Don’t set yourself up for failure, please.

Feel free to switch it up.
So you have successfully almost-mimicked the style, but you aren’t just feeling the pinned-inward bang on your head, even though it looks so fabulous on her head. Feel free to take the tips out, and pin it sideways. There’s no rule that says you must copy hers in every single way. I guess that is we have our own head, so we can choose to do things our way. Who says your own version can’t even be far better than hers, and people would then look forward to you starting your own videos, because of your amazing improvisation skills?

So here it is, six tips on how to survive natural hair youtube videos. Do you have more tips? Do you watch youtube videos, or you would rather learn and fail on your own, due to your adventurous nature? Let us know what you think.

13 Things husbands and boyfriends of every naturalista should know

Source
She will look like a white garment church prophetess anytime she is at home
It’s not her fault. She just cannot afford hair damage, or sacrifice the health of her hair at the altar of beauty. She knows that as long as she can keep her hair healthy, you will be the main beneficiary of the compliment whenever you are with her in public, so indulge her, and let her wear that ugly satin bonnet when she is at home!

Source
She will make many friends while you are in public with her
She has natural hair! This means she will make at least 10 automatic friends for every time you go out with her, and that is the least. Natural girls love to hail their own, and strike instant conversations. It comes with the territory, so try to deal with it.

You will need to save her from the hair-touching ninjas
People will try to touch her hair, both strangers and known faces. It is your duty to draw out your sword and cut off any wandering fingers trying to hover around her hair. Only one person is allowed to touch her hair, and you my friend, have that great privilege, so protect your territory, man.

She will take over your whole closet, and some more
Her materials will be in the bathroom, kitchen, fridge, wardrobe, car, every single place you can think of. So just get ready, and when you see it happen, don’t bother complaining.

Just because it looks edible does not mean it is to be eaten
Yes we know that pudding in the bowl looks and smells yummy. It is a mixture of banana smoothie, mayonnaise, honey, avocado, yoghurt, etc. But stop… don’t try to eat it. It might have laden with some less-desirable things like Aloe vera, nettle, etc. You eat any strange yet inviting mix at your own risk. Don’t day you were not warned.

She will take over the fridge
You will see strange things like preserved DC, Aloe vera, coconut milk, etc. The fridge will be full, and it won’t be with things for you and your buddies, your children, or even for cooking. Don’t question her. Her hair comes first.

Seeing strands of hair everywhere you go will become the norm
You will see black wisps of hair on your pillow, in your car, in the bathroom, kitchen, everywhere you can imagine, even on your shirt… in office… while making a presentation in front of the 50-man management team. Just take care not to start dusting them off, in case the fly into the tea cup of the CEO.

You might not recognise her sometimes, but trust me, she's the one
Forgive her hair. It decided to do a 90% shrinkage today, due to the fact that she mistakenly added too much glycerine to her daily spritz, and was not even aware of it. Even though her hair was long to the middle of her back yesterday, believe her when she tells you she did not take a pair of scissors to the hair. And don’t try to imagine what she would look like tomorrow. You would only set yourself up for failure.

Your friends would either love her or not. No middle ground!
Get ready for statements like “Your hair looks gorgeous” and “What is this bird’s nest you are carrying on your head” from your friends, whenever you take your natural other half out. It comes with the territory of dating a naturalista

Be ready to defend her hair decisions, whether you understand them or not
When your mother, siblings, friends, or enemies tell you or her to go get her hair done because she looks like a mad woman, be ready to speak up for her immediately, even if you completely agree with them. Don’t wait for her to remind you, by pinching you under the table. This would really do wonders for your love bank, as a woman would do anything for a man she knows has her back

Familiarise yourself with safe ingredients
We know many ladies are impressed when their men buy them things that are actually useful. To impress your natural other half, don’t just think you can buy her any product you assume is for natural hair, out there. You need to know what ingredients are safe for her, and that her hair loves. Failure to do this would resort in you having the products all over your bald head.

Be ready to hear and learn a lot of natural hair lingo
When she calls you up to tell you she needs you to get to the mall because she has to do an ACV rinse or moisturising DC, do you know what she means? As a lover of a naturalista, you have to be very familiar and willing to keep up with the various natural hair lingoes out there ranging from APL, BSL, to DC, sulphate-free, silicone, etc.

BHD is the new PMS
Whenever you natural other half is in a bad mood, don’t just attribute it to PMS, as most men do. I tell you, it is most-likely due to the fact that she couldn’t achieve that gorgeous flat twists and twists out she saw on her favourite youtube idol. Just give her space and time, and don’t worry. A simple afro puff and a great compliment from you will vaporise the bad mood all away.

So there it is. I hope you enjoyed it. Send this link to every boyfriend, fiancee, husband, or even toaster of every naturalista you know.

Natural Hair 101: The Spouse's guide

Hello Naturalistas,

All I want you to do this week is just copy this link and forward to your significant other, Have you even taught to educate them? Well... That is why I am here.

Naturalistas that are not single tend to think about their partner before they take major hair decisions e.g BC, Hair Colour or the decision to even go natural in the First place. Your man may not like your natural hair, But this is for the men that are willing and do not have a heads up on what they are getting into. So, Please go ahead. Show him!

Hello Spouse, This is NOT to discourage but to EDUCATE you about what you should expect during your partner's natural hair journey. I cannot promise that I am serious about everything I will be mentioning but trust me, there is Truth!

...And the list goes on...

Help her look for her satin bonnet; If you're not the one that hid it, help her look for it. Yes, I know it looks like something your granny will wear but its a matter of hair security. And if she's not wearing it, ask her about it. Unlike the bobby pins, don't bother. Those ones develop legs and disappear. \

Be Supportive; search for links online and send to her, see one hairstyle you love, ask her to try it. Give compliments. And she doesn't have to ask.  Just be her Idris elba!  Simple
What else could a naturalista ask for in a man?
DO NOT TASTE EVERY MIXTURE IN THE KITCHEN; Ask Demeji, You really don't want an angry wife/girlfriend. If she doesn't tell you its for consumption, Its for her hair. Don't bother she's spending so much time mixing, trust me you will feel the softness ;) Its worth it!

She will start complaining about the protective style 2 days later; Don't mind her... but don't let her know. I REPEAT DO NOT SAY IT OUT LOUD!! Just encourage her
Its 2 days, best believe
ADA ADA in the morning, Caro at Night; .... And she will look the part too... Brace yourself!

 "No, Your hair is longer baby";

For every length check, say this to her, repeat after me "No, your hair is longer baby. I see it"

so, men, tell us the things you've had to find out about your wife/girlfriends natural hair and ladies, is there anything you would like to add about your ''habits'' and good hair behaviours? Lets know

What Is The Worst Negative Hair Comment You've Ever Received?

Hi ladies!

As naturals, we have to contend on a daily basis with negative comments from people who have issues controlling their mouths. Some are downright ruthless others, just plain stupid. They have a way of inflicting us with the wrong vibes that sometimes even question our stance.

In my church for instance, folks have a way of attacking me and my hair. In fact, early this year, one had the gut to confront me. Meanwhile, there are ladies with waist-length weaves in the same church. He made some nasty comment about my hair and makeup which was of course very modest. And I'm like, ''Excuse me, this is my natural hair'' and he's like,''I know but it's not portraying you in the right way'' I just stood staring vowing never to take him serious again.

Recently, my mum called me a mad woman because I colored my hair that resulted in highlights. I was just looking at her. I didn't have the strength to argue. It goes on and on. I really don't understand why people can't restrain themselves. If you don't have anything pleasant to say, please reserve it. Life is hard enough.

So tell me, what's your worst hair comment? Let's talk!

The baton has been passed to me so here goes.

1. I don't sleep in a satin/silk bonnet. I don't even own one. I have this makeshift scarf that's neither satin nor silk that I wear that pretty much comes off before morning.

2. I don't have a regular hair regimen. Mine starts from deep condition--->shampooing and/or conditioning--->rinse--->air dry--->moisturize and seal. This is because I co-wash frequently  and so my hair's hardly ever dirty.

3. I don't pre-poo and I hardly do hot oil treatments

4. I don't comb my hair. Haven't used one in 6months.

5. I chemically dyed my hair by  myself twice

6. I've never trimmed my hair

7. I've never been to a professional hair stylist

8. I've never used heat for any reason

9. Sometimes, I use tiny rubber bands to band my hair.

10. I never wash my hair in sections.

Hi Naturalistas
Today I want y'all to meet the Melanesian people from the Solomon Islands particularly known for their unique dark skin and blonde hair.
Melanesia, located close to the north and north east parts of Australia is home to these beautiful people with coily, thick blonde hair and very dark skin.
I stumbled on a photo of 3 black kids with dark skin and blonde hair a while back. I thought they were really cute and I just brushed it off like  "Interesting combination!"
My thoughts were that it could simply be a sort of an interracial mix. Just recently I stumbled on an article that explained that it was actually a mutation of the gene and I was pleasantly surprised. This just happens to be a unique characteristic for these people. It is so beautiful to behold.

Beautiful right?
Remember to keep your heads high and rock your kinks with pride.

This is Monday morning, and this post couldn't have come at a better time.

One of the reasons many ladies have not gone natural is because, even though they love natural hair, they are not sure of how it will fit into the work environment. Well, fret no more, this post is a magic wand sure to solve all your problems. Just follow me, as we work through the steps below.

1. Find out the HR policy of the company you are working at or desire to work, out.
If you are already working, and thinking of going natural, with the intent to wear your natural hair out, the first thing you should do is observe if there are people doing this amongst your colleagues. If yes, you are fine, else, probe further. Does your company allow people to wear their natural hair out? As funny as it might sound, Berry told us about one Nigerian bank that doesn’t allow their staff to wear their natural hair out. If you are not sure, find out from the HR manager.

If you haven’t started work yet, and you are natural, before you apply for a job, find out if the company allows natural hair on display. There is no use applying for a job you can’t work at because they forced you to relax your hair. When I was applying for jobs in my days, I was on dreadlocks. There were many companies I did not apply to because of my hair. I did not bother applying to banks, cos in those days, dread locks were a no no, I don’t know about now, and I wasn’t ready to cut off my dreads for any reason. I ended up working in a sort-of international global network of firms. On my first day of work, the first thing I did, in front of about 70 graduate trainees, was to ask the HR manager, about their hairstyling policy. I told her I had dread under my kinky braids, and I won’t be able to cover it up forever, so I needed to know if it was allowed. Daring, right? On my first day at work. With hindsight, I now ask myself “what were you thinking?” lol. How did it end? About 3 months later, I started wearing my dreads out, and let’s just say when I left 3 years later, there were up to 10 people on dreadlocks, including managers, but I was the pace setter, and no one stopped me.

In summary, however you choose to wear your hair, find out what the company says about it before you take the plunge

2. Try to make your hair as neat as possible.
So now, your company doesn’t frown at natural hair, but they are not completely open to it. They are probably watching you, and waiting for you to slip. It is left for you to shut the nay-sayers up by making sure your natural hair is neat and tidy at all times. Don’t give anyone an excuse to bash natural hair. You can choose to see yourself as an ambassador, so conduct yourself nicely. I must confess, when I was working, I didn’t really follow this rule at all times. When I cut my dreads, and started wearing my natural hair our, my hair was mostly in twists. But sometimes, I could allow my head to spin, and decide to go to the office with a crazy fro-hawk, just to see the look on people’s faces. I usually pulled stunts like these on the last Friday of the month, when we have to appear at the office for departmental meetings (we work in client site most times). At one point in time, I did Adimole (didi), which got mixed reactions. People loved it, and many hated it. One of my senior colleagues called me, and said “@ilola, we know you are daring and bold, and don’t send. Everyone knows that, but this (my didi) is too extreme.” Looooll. At least, my boldness gave people courage cos in less than 2 months, about 2 other ladies in the company also did Didi.

3. Don't always use every opportunity to talk about hair
Okay, you have been allowed to wear your natural hair. People are loving and admiring it. In fact, you are the number one hair idol in your office. That doesn’t mean you should talk about hair all the time, and your 20-step regimen. Remember you are there to do a job. Face your work (Uche Onise), and stop talking about hair, lol. Don’t turn yourself to the office trichologist. If that is what your passion is about, quit your job and go and start a hair care clinic. In the meantime, be nice to your employers, and do what you are paid to do!

4. Don’t be a natural hair advocate or be condescending to ladies with relaxed hair.
You are not a pastor, and your pulpit is not in the office. Everyone has the right to wear their hair in whatever way they please. The fact that you are probably now the hair idol in your company does not give you the licence to preach. Don’t start giving relaxed ladies hundred reasons why they should go natural. You’ll just end up pitching your colleagues against you. If you want to be a natural hair advocate, come to this blog, and drop your comments. We will listen to your advocating sermons. That is what we are here for anyway. So keep that business out of the office environment. Please, read this post for more insights on this particular point.

5. Don't be too defensive when talking about your hair.
The truth is that many of your colleagues will frown at the fact that you chose to wear your hair naturally, and some of them will feel it is their duty to let you know you are not normal. When you experience this, don’t be on the defensive. Don’t return their occasional insults with yours, don’t tell them to shut their trap or mind their business. This is not the time for you to ‘give it back to them’, it only puts you on the same level as them. If you must reply them, be polite about it. Don’t try to educate them (remember point 3). And smile… smiling changes a whole lot of things than you can imagine. Return their remarks with smiles. After a while, they will get the message, and leave you alone.

So these are a few tips on how to wear natural hair in the workplace without losing your mind.
