WHY ISN'T MY HAIR GROWING?!

When you see natural hair queens on Instagram or on TV, you have dreams of having such beautiful, long hair. You see these women twist and curl and manipulate their hair into forms that can only be explained by natural hair pros. They may even be the reason why you decided to start the natural hair journey in the first place. But you’ve been growing your hair diligently for years now but your hair is not mid-back length yet. You don’t know why even though you follow all the instructions the manufacturer wrote down.

You are stuck with the same hair length. You now believe that your hair has stopped growing, the same way people stop growing when they reach a certain age. The good part is, you have a faint glimmer of hope that you are wrong and your hair will still grow. We are here to tell you that faint glimmer is about to bloom bright and beautiful!

Your hair grows about half an inch every month and about 6 inches of newly grown hairs every year. That’s an amazing amount of growth. So why does it seem like it’s not growing? Why doesn’t your hair look like the queens of natural hair on TV and Instagram?

Who rocked the style best? Afro

Afro! Afro!! Afro!!! By far the easiest natural hair style to rock, whether it is teeny weeny or gigantic. But that is if you can deal with the effects humidity has on it in some regions of the world

It is not news that some people have the ability to wear the most elegantly-sculpted afro, while some just turn it into an eyesore.

As usual, we have featured six celebrities who wear their hair out in afro from time to time.. Who would you say rocked their locs best, and why? The classies or the crazies? Remember you can only pick one. We would also like to know the reason for your pick. You can click the picture to enlarge it, in case you want to see the intricate details of the hair styles.

So who rocked this style best?

My 2017 Natural Hair Goal

Happy New Year everyone!

I wish you all a wonderful, happy year ahead. Since it's the new year, everyone's been talking about their resolutions and goals. I typically always share my Hair-solutions at the beginning of each year too. I don't do so well with my goals at the end of the day though *hides face.* I chat frequently with our other contributor Ebun, and she put out the question for this year - asking what people were hoping for their hair this year.

In the past few months I've thought about cutting my hair and starting from scratch. I've been natural for over 10 years now, and I feel like my hair doesn't reflect that. Not that I'm necessarily looking for long hair, but in my mind sometimes, it's not as healthy as it could be - completely my fault though. I haven't cut it yet because of a small fear of having to start all over. I've also thought about coloring it - but that means more work for me, and I just cannot be bothered right now. And my final option, which is Ebun's favorite option - is to loc it. I know I'd look nice with locs, but I'm afraid my hair would be thin and I don't like thin hair on my face.

All this being said, I finally decided on a resolution for 2017 - embrace my hair, show it off and be proud of it. I think the reason why I've thought about cutting it so much is because I don't really show my hair a lot of love. I wear a lot of wigs, cos I like them and dabble in protective styles like crochet braids. But I don't think i wear my hair out often enough. So this year, I will strive to wear it out more often. Yes, I will still have protective styles on occasion but this is the year where I show my hair love!

Have a great weekend!

The South African Natural Hair Protest

I think it's important for us here on African Naturalistas to stay informed on natural hair issues. If you watched, listened or read to news outlets this week, there was a story about discrimination against natural hair in a school in South Africa.

On Monday about 200 students at Pretoria High School For Girls protested school policies that prevented them from wearing their hair in it's natural state. According to them, the school code mandated that hair must be "brushed and worn in conservative styles." Some of the styles that were allegedly banned include afros, bantu knots, locs, box braids and more! One of the protesters said that a teacher once told her that her natural hair should be combed because it looks like a bird's nest!!! Can you imagine the audacity?!?!?!

I'm immensely proud of those young women who boldly stood up for their rights. This reminds me of when I first moved back to Nigeria and would go to work with my natural hair out. As much as people were wowed that I was brave enough to do it (I don't know how that's bravery), I also got rude comments. I clearly remember my friend telling me that my hair was yucky and that guys would NEVER talk to me. Lol, anyone seen my wedding photos yet? Oh and guess what, the same girl is natural now.

It saddens me that there is discrimination against natural hair IN AFRICA! Again, kudos to the young women for not allowing it!

Did you hear about the story? What did you think about it?

Lupita for Vogue Magazine

I had a different post for today, but I'm rescheduling it to bring you the gorgeousness that is Lupita Nyong'o! Most people in the world would recognize her from her taking over Hollywood after her Oscar-winning appearance in the critically-acclaimed film, "12 Years A Slave." She took the fashion world by storm and has been a media darling for the past couple of years. She has a few movies out soon, and bought the movie rights for Chimamanda Adichie's book, 'Americanah,' so we have a lot more to watch out for from this AFRICAN NATURALISTA!

Her second Vogue Magazine cover came out this week and everyone, including me, is in a frenzy over the beautiful photos and I thought I should share some of my favorites here. Let's bask in the knowledge that natural hair isn't something to be ashamed of. She rocks her TWA with style and finesse, and I think that should inspire anyone who's having some difficulties as a new natural.

Enjoy the photos all from Vogue.com!

I can't decide which photo is my favorite, but it's between the one in the blue dress, the one where she's sitting barefoot, and this black and white one. Which one's your favorite?

Have a nice weekend :)

Rocking extremely short natural hair aka teeny weeny Afro (TWA)

Hi Naturalistas

As you might have already learnt through the course of your using this site, the greatest hitch with the natural african hair is proper management. The difference between an unkempt hair and a beautifully stylish one is proper management.

Especially for beginners, it's always very challenging. Just getting to discover the setbacks surrounding your hair and how to overcome them at the initial stage might not be very easy, coupled with the fact that at that stage, you will have to deal with very short hair, most times, it is just very frustrating.

I'm going to spend some time to talk about managing the very short hair at the stage often referred to as the 'Teeny weeny afro' (TWA).

For your short hair, you'll have to put some work into it before you can get that stylish and sophisticated look that you aim for. That is if you're someone like me *wink*

Here are a few tips:

Try not to keep it looking dry. Yes, invest in moisturizers, oils and other good hair products. That's the basis for any great style.

On a very lazy day. See what I mean? :)

Be creative with styling it. You don't need to always wear it as an afro as you might become bored overtime. Try to define the curls sometimes. Styling gel will also work to keep the curls lasting a lot longer. You can braid the sides(mohawk style) or just one side, flat twist the front, and the sides, just explore!

Hair accessories are your friend. Invest in them. They can transform any outfit. It works like magic. When it gets boring, just try a splash of colour with a nice head band or a scarf and check out the difference.

You want to dress up for a friend's wedding for instance and you think your hair is just playing down your whole outlook? No don't jump on your relaxer yet, style it and try putting a nice flashy flower just somewhere at the side and see how beautiful it will turn out. I hear a lot of people say, "I relaxed my hair because I had to go for a wedding". Really, you don't have to. You can still play around with your hair and it will be a real fashion statement kind of hairstyle.

Statement earrings. Yes, I am aware that some people are afraid that with short hair, their faces might look smaller, with a nice set of dangling earrings, that's just as good as sorted. Nice colourful dangling earrings will give your face some volume while adding that femininity to your face.

Makeup. If you worry about looking like a boy, spend some time with your makeup. Bold lips, well outlined eyebrows and perfectly mascaraed eyes will give you the change that you crave.

A good trick is to try to keep your outfits girly. Little bits like a nice pair of glasses can also help you play things out evenly on a good note

Do not worry, it's just a stage. Consider it an investment for the future as you won't need to put in as much efforts once the hair grows out.

And trust me you don't have anything to worry about. You can still look very beautiful in fact, ravishing with your tiny little afro. Just put in some effort, explore a little bit and you'll realize that there's really nothing to lose.
And this will not be complete if I don't mention what I like most about the very short afro. Don't you enjoy it when you pour water on your head? Trust me the feeling is epic.
Well, enjoy your 'teeny weeny afro' now because before you know it, your hair will grow out and you'll definitely miss those days sometimes. You can check out more on this topic here

Men growing their natural hair out

Hi Naturalistas
African men keeping their hair is something that is not exactly the norm. Our male counterparts often have to visit a barber to keep their hair very short frequently. The reason is not far fetched. It is easier to manage the hair in that form and many people have taken to it. For some reasons, most of them that grow their hair prefer to restructure it and carry it slipped back or braided. The hair when completely relaxed mimics the look of a caucasian's hair which is not such a rare sight and it's also easy to manage.

I do not sit down to imagine guys going through the struggle of growing their hair out as Afro, not when they have several options and they do not really need to feel out of place.

Hair is generally known as the crown of a woman. I understand that we can go very far just to keep that hair looking great all the time. It doesn't really matter the race, ladies just have this tendency of spending the time to care for their hair.
Looking at men over the years as they gradually embrace growing their hair naturally has been sort of fascinating. The big question is always, "Do they really have to work hard to manage the hair like we ladies do?"
Those that opt for locs make the question somewhat easier to answer. Considering their more laid back nature when it comes to hair concerns, it is definitely understandable that they would prefer to just loc it and forget it. They do not need to put in so much routines in caring for it.
But one thing is sure, when I see a man with a big Afro puff, I'm always inspired all over again.

But really, how much work do they have to put in to keep that hair looking full, neat and stretched out? I guess they really do not have to struggle with it otherwise they would have easily opted for the many other comfortable options.

If the men can do it, you definitely can

Natural hairstyles for 31 days!

Helloooooooooooooo!

How's your week been? I hope it was pretty, splendid and pretty splendid. Last week I told you I had a surprise for you, and today I deliver! About a month ago, I determined to leave my hair out for at least one month. Usually, I would switch it up with one of my custom wigs and occasionally, braids. But this time, I didn't just want to leave my hair out. I wanted to change my hair style EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy. After the first week, I started running out of ideas. And then I turned to Google (not Youtube) and our very own Kenyan Mystic here on African Naturalistas. I also found a natural hair blogger who did 30 Updos in 30 Days - I also copied some of her styles.

This exercise taught me that there's so much we can do with our hair! Whoever said natural hair's boring doesn't know what they're talking about. I mean, I twisted my hair just once, to get a twist out (first picture). It also fostered my creativity, made me ensure that I took better care of my hair, and made me appreciate my hair a little more. I also learned to incorporate hair accessories into my styling - scarves, combs, flower pins, etc.

So here goes...
