VERY EASY Natural Hair Style Tutorial

Hey ladies!

I like easy natural hair styles that can be done with no fuss, can be done quickly, and done using very few items. It's great for people with medium to long hair, who are having a few shrinkage days. I'm sure those in that awkward length stage will also be able to do it. One of my favorite natural hair bloggers, Aisha, who we featured as an AN Bride a while ago recently posted a natural hair tutorial that is VERY SIMPLE and EASY to follow. I'll post a photo of my attempt below the video.

I think you can do this on medium to long hair.

Learn how to make a Crochet Wig

Hi everyone!
Thank God it's Friday, a holiday (Democracy Day in Nigeria), a day of change and hope (the inauguration of our new president) and my birthday!

Last week I attended my cousin's wedding and at the very last minute (the night before) decided that I would attempt making a crochet wig. There are numerous tutorials on YouTube and it's pretty easy.
All you need are a weaving/wig cap, crochet needle (I prefer bobby pins though), extensions (I used a kinky braid, and also Cuban twists), scissors and finally a wig head.

The first one I made with the kinky braiding hair was a hit and I liked the texture because it was soft and light - my sister took it from me though. I used 2 packs for this one.

The second one, I made (for my other sister) using Cuban twists and while it's not as soft as the other hair, it matches my texture so well. So much so that I can leave hair out and try different styles. I used 1.5 packs for this one.

Here are some great tutorials below.

Have a very nice weekend, and if you have 2 hours on your hands, you can try making this wig. Some people dip the hair in hot water while rolled up to have a curly/ringlet effect - it's up to you.

Most of the time, I finger comb my children's natural hair. However, there are times when I need to bring out the BIG GUNS. When that happens, finding the right tool for the job will safe you from breakage.

Here are the combs and brushes I have and their purposes:

Detangling Combs

I use these wide tooth combs to detangle my hair when wet/damp. You can get these combs even wider. This is the number one "must have" combs for everyone.

When using this comb, you should always gently comb your hair in sections. Also always start from the ends of the hair never the root.

Styling Combs

There are two rat-tail combs that I have.  One has a plastic tail, while the other has a metal tail.  I like using the metal tail when I do cornrows or twists that require neat lines. To see how I use these combs, click HERE.

I avoid using the teeth section of this comb.  I find that it breaks the hair if I do that.

Pick Comb

The pick comb can be used when picking the hair for an afro style or to lift up the root of the hair to create a fuller look. If you don't want to use this comb, another option is to use your fingers.  That works well.

Edge-smoothen brush

This soft boar bristle brush is only used to smoothen and brush edges for a neater look.  I love the softness of it and that it does not break the hair along the edges.  The brush works really well when used on damp hair.

Most of the time, I usually just mist my girls' edges with water, and occasionally apply some gel, tie down with a scarf, and the edges look all neat.

Denman brush

When I buy the Denman brush, there are a couple of things to take note of...
  • If you want better grip, get a brush with more rows of bristles. The D4 has 9 rows, which most people like using. It is ideal for thicker and longer hair.
  • Not all brushes are created the same. Visit the Denman website to get all the information on the different types of brushes.
What combs do you like using and which ones will you NEVER use on your kids?

11 scarves in 11 styles: Jazz up your natural hair

Are you one of those girls or women who only wear scarves on bad hair days? Well, i'm here to tell you that scarves can also be a great accessory and protective gear for your hair. I wear scarves as accessories on days I don't feel like wearing a headband, flower or any hair piece. I also wear it outdoor in the winter and summer season.

In the winter time, I would wear a thick scarf on extremely cold days. I do this to protect my hair from freezing and breaking off with the strong winds. While in the summer time, I would just throw a thin scarf on my head on hot days as i'm afraid the sun would fry my hair and make it feel "strawlike".  And since I styled my hair before leaving the house, I might remove the scarf once i'm indoor.

So if you have a bunch of scarves just sitting in your cupboard or elsewhere around the house, why not collect them all together and start wrapping them around your head to see what you'll come up with. And if you can't think of anything, you can start with the 11 styles below and remember to share pictures of your beautiful styles on my facebook page.

Natural hairstyles for 31 days!

Helloooooooooooooo!

How's your week been? I hope it was pretty, splendid and pretty splendid. Last week I told you I had a surprise for you, and today I deliver! About a month ago, I determined to leave my hair out for at least one month. Usually, I would switch it up with one of my custom wigs and occasionally, braids. But this time, I didn't just want to leave my hair out. I wanted to change my hair style EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy. After the first week, I started running out of ideas. And then I turned to Google (not Youtube) and our very own Kenyan Mystic here on African Naturalistas. I also found a natural hair blogger who did 30 Updos in 30 Days - I also copied some of her styles.

This exercise taught me that there's so much we can do with our hair! Whoever said natural hair's boring doesn't know what they're talking about. I mean, I twisted my hair just once, to get a twist out (first picture). It also fostered my creativity, made me ensure that I took better care of my hair, and made me appreciate my hair a little more. I also learned to incorporate hair accessories into my styling - scarves, combs, flower pins, etc.

So here goes...

More natural hairstyles for your big day

Hi Naturalistas
Last week I shared a few hairstyles for the natural hair bride.

I realized that the styles were more like the styles I could wear and I really didn't add the styles that I couldn't consider. I decided to explore the other options - the locs, twist outs, TWAs ..etc
These styles are basically those you can wear for a formal event.
So feel free to let your imaginations take the lead. Be inspired!

Remember to keep your heads high and rock your kinks with pride, even on your big day

Must Have Hair Accessories for your Natural Hair

With this Natural Hair of ours, there is no way we can ignore the use of accessories, Its super important. Whether you are thinking of going Natural or you began the journey already, Here is a list of Must have accessories for your Natural Hair;

- Bobby Pins: If you don’t have any other thing this cannot be over rated. It helps you hold your hair in place when styling your hair. Plus I saw somewhere that how we've been placing it is wrong its supposed to  be the other way around
 -   Clips: This also does the same thing as the bobby pins only its a lot more fancy, helps put your hair and place while adding beauty, most appropriate for kids.

           - Flowers: I’m not the type to add a flower to my hair after styling but then, it just add this pop to it, which is lovely.

- Scarfs: For the “bad” hair days or deep conditioning days. Scarfs come in handy. Def a must have.

-  Turbans: Tired of scarfs? Let kick it up a notch, lets go big. Turbans to the rescue.

 - Bands: This is must have for styling. Helps give the desired style.

   - Ribbons: I wont do flowers but I can def do ribbons, also good for kids to make them look princess-y and all

-  Caps & Hats: When all else fails? *Winks*

What else is a must have hair accessory for you? And which one on my list has been your “life-saving” accessory? Mine? It’s the Hair bands J
