Defining Your Curls With Perm Rods

Hello ladies!

Last time, I showed you how you can achieve defined curls with flexi rods. Today, I'm gonna be talking about perm rods also known as roller sets. One of the best things about perm rods is that they can be used on any hair length. From TWA to medium length to big 'fro. All you need is

  • Perm rods according to your hair length
  • Leave-in conditioner/hair spritz
  • Hair butter
  • Styling lotion
  • Gel/Pudding
Or whatever products you use to moisturize and give hold

Technique
  • Prep your hair by washing and conditioning if you haven't previously
  • Apply leave-in or hair spritz to moisturize
  • Slather gel, pudding or styling lotion
  • Put your hair in sections
  • Work each rod round your hair until you've gone round your head
  • Leave to dry overnight preferably or under a dryer
  • Unravel rods
  • Style as desired
If you're stuck, this might help

Has anyone tried perm sets before?

How did it turn out?

What combination of products did you use for hold?

War of the Natural Hair Coverings: Scarves vs Bonnets!!!

Picture this...

You've had a long long day.
You get home and have dinner, watch a little TV or read a book maybe.
You get ready for bed and remember you need to cover your hair and/or preserve your hairstyle...

What do you reach for? Scarf or Bonnet? Does it matter to you?

natural hair satin scarf

Source
I personally prefer scarves because they keep hair styles in place, and I'm usually wearing a bun so I have to make sure my edges are as flat as possible. Since I don't wear braids and weaves that often, I don't see the need to have a bonnet. And plus I think bonnets are very grandma-ish and unsexy :p (As if scarves are sexy at all)

Whatever you reach for, remember the benefits of keeping your hair covered while you sleep.

  • Prevents hair from rubbing against pillow, which causes breakage
  • Helps hair retain moisture
  • It can help to minimize tangles
  • Helps to prevent oils and other products from staining your pillow
  • Preserves your natural hairstyle longer

Remember that SILK or SATIN are your best bets for hair coverings!!!

What's your preferred hair cover?
Bonnet
Scarf
Either one
I don't cover my hair to sleep

Natural Hair Hygienic practices that are often overlooked

Hello Naturalistas,

As much as we take care of our hair, how often do we take care of everything else that helps us take care of our hair?

Like our dresser (or where ever you put your products); We know the mess that can come from using our oily hands to pick up every other product, or from mixing different concoction for your hair, that all that hair shed? Time to clean out! Yes, I know you're tired and you promised to do it tomorrow. Take time out this weekend and wash the oil out of all - Yes ALL - of your product containers.

What of your Combs and brushes?

Time to whip them out and soak all of them in lukewarm Hot water, disinfectant and soap. Do this very often (I don't want to state a specific duration as some people are neat freaks).

Your Satin bonnet and scarf;

We can easily forget that we've had this for over 2 weeks and because its black it is not telling you its dirty *face palm* I know I know #Guilty (Mine is not black Tho). This one I would say if possible wash every week but not more than 2 weeks should you go without washing. It stays on your head every night. Its got to stay clean.

And Finally Accessories

Hair bands, hair wands, hair dands... (You get my point -__-) How ever small or thin, does it go on your hair often? Please wash it often too. We tend to over look the little things, yes, clean your bobby pins too.

I know I am guilty of this too especially when it comes to my accessories so are we ready to take better care of everything else that helps us take care of our Natural hair?

P.S: If you are interested in getting featured on the mane matters column kindly send a mail to tomi.akibo@gmail.com stating your interest with the Subject as "Mane Matters" and please be sure you have clear pictures.

Before you braid or twist your natural hair

Hallo!

How's your week been? I hope you've had a pretty one. Last weekend, I decided to finally get my hair braided. I'd been talking about it for a while, but never got around to it because of time. So last weekend, when I had a few hours to play with, I got my book ready, called a hair braider and spent a few hours getting my new black/brown locks.

Before I braided my hair though, I wanted to make sure that I did all that I could, to make sure that my natural hair was ready. You want to make sure any potential damage is minimized or even removed, so these are the steps I took:

STEP 1: DEEP CONDITION
The first thing I did was deep condition my hair. I've read somewhere that putting the deep conditioner in your hair BEFORE washing, ensures that the contents seep into your hair better than when it's wet. In addition, it also saves time, so you don't have to wash, DC, wash again. I used AN's Deep Conditioning Mayonnaise. Bonus: I did this step while getting a pedicure (remember I prefer going to salons), so it was in my hair for about an hour and a half or so.

STEP 2: WASH/CONDITION
Next, I took off the towel and shower cap, and proceeded to get my hair washed and conditioned. I used AN's Moisturizing Natural Shampoo and Moisturizing and Detangling Conditioner.

STEP 3: DETANGLE
The next thing I did was slather my hair with water, mixture of oils (including olive oil and AN's Castor Oil), glycerin, a little leave-in conditioner, and sealed with AN's Moisturizing Hair Butter (which smells AH-MAH-ZING btw). I braided my hair into about 8 sections, for easier management. Then I began to detangle my hair strands by section.  Once my hair was moisturized enough, I used a wide-tooth comb and a curl detangler brush.

Source: This isn't me. Just showing you how the brush looks.
STEP 4: STRETCH
Finally, I put my freshly detangled hair back into braided sections (you can twist them). This gives your hair some stretch, so you don't have to use heat. The braid stylist even commented that my hair was easy to manage because I'd detangled and pre-braided.

So there you have it! Now, I'll have to ensure that my braids are kept in good condition, and that my hair is routinely moisturized and kept clean.

Have a very lovely weekend!
Berry Dakara.

Is Heat an abomination for Natural Hair Ladies?

hello natural chicas...

I'm sure with the number of blogs, vlogs and so many other stuffs we see everywhere on the Natural Hair topic, with Dos and Donts, you're bound to wonder about so many things.
One of the things i'll be talking about today is Heat.
And in cases like this, Heat tools are the culprits.

As many of you may be wondering from all that you've read, and all the Don'ts of natural hair, most especially if you have fine hair and not coarse hair like most of us, Heat is not an abomination to natural Hair.
It is not a taboo. People tend to see it as a very big disadvantage especially when you're still nuturing your short hair or medium sized hair growth but it isnt really. Yes, it has it's disadvantages. And what doesn't have a disadvantage in this life? Too much of everything isn't good, and you just have to be careful and disciplined.

Things you should know about blow drying and flat ironing

-It shouldnt be a weekly routine.

-The hair cuticles are in their fragile state when wet, and so, when straightening or flat ironing your hair, make sure it is not in it's wet state.
-Try getting a heat serum to apply on the hair evenly after blowdrying before flat ironing.

When you're about to use a flat iron, make sure you use the type that is flexible within it's heat distributon range. Same with a blow dryer so that it's not permanently on a particular degree that could burn out your hair when you begin passing it through.

-Hair burns at 451 degree celsius and so be careful you are far away from the range where your hair begins to smell and roasted bacon.
-If you are going to apply heat to your hair, it should be done once or twice yearly and when straightened, make sure the style you want to do takes like two weeks before washing. Yes. and then you begin planning another style after wash day.

Some people's straightened hair lasts for a month and as cool as that sounds, mine didn't. I wish it could though. I saw a product tagged Silk elements on Youtube that actually contributed to the girl's flat ironed hair lasting for a week.

-Sometimes, I know we want to just flaunt the length of our hair and so straightening does a good job with that. but you don't indulge forever.

When you're about to flat iron or blow dry, make sure you have moisturising products(i.e products that help you lock in moisture when your hair is getting dry so that it doesn't rip out while straightening.)
This will do you a lot of good.
Until next time
Ciao

9 reasons why your hair is probably NOT growing

Hello ladies,

First of all, the title of this post is intentionally misleading. This is because everyone's hair grows at a particular rate, at least, as long as your hair follicles are not damaged. So if you see hair on that spot, then your hair is growing. But not everyone sees these growth manifest because they are not able to retain length.

In my last post titled, After trying, what next, I remember encouraging the natural chicas to just be patient and watch your hair grow and blossom in time to your desired length if you've tried all.
But what I forgot to include was, The things that you're probably doing and NOT doing that will actually leave your hair stagnant or retard hair growth.

1. Everyday Moisture: For a while, most especially in this region of the world, we believed right from childhood that once you can get lots of cream or grease on your hair, your hair will be so soft and free from dandruff that results from dry hair
How wrong we were.
Moisture is water, and this should be sprayed unto your hair everyday. In the morning before going to work, and at night before bed while covering with a satin bonnet.
I've been negligent often, sometimes, we get so tired we just slump on the bed and doze off, neglecting the fact that we need to add our water and olive oil therapy before going to bed.
And then, we add to the whole complications by sleeping on your duvet or a cotton bedsheet or pillow hereby leaving your hair dry and brittle, whereas, the cotton has soaked up the little oil you had in your hair.
this bad habit can lead to hair breakage and will prevent your hair from growing well if practised often.

2. Too much grease applied unto the scalp in order to boost shine can actually clog your pores and hinder your hair from growing in time. Don't forget you get approximately half an inch of hair every month. So don't try doing things that will retard hair growth.

3. Towel drying; Have you ever noticed the way our salons are when a lady has just washed out the relaxer from her hair and then the towel scrubbing drying begins and it's like they're gonna pull of the hair strands? well, as for natural hair, DO NOT TRY IT or your hair will fall of in time. Rather, you use an old cotton shirt or material which is light to sparingly dry the air and also air dry. If you make any attempt to towel dry your hair, don't be surprised when your hair begins falling out little by little

4. Leaving a style/protective style on for too long: I used to do this before, and so I wasn't surprised when @ilola's hair was longer than mine though I had been with the natural hair for a while. I would do these yarn braids and then leave it for more than a month or two due to school work and the rest.
But little did I know what I was doing at that time. Even the twists done on natural hair could be harmful if left for too long. It gets tangled up and the roots can get clogged due to dirt and dust.
And so, whatever happens, do not leave a style on your hair for too long. It will only break your hair and take so much hair with it. I really lost a lot of hair through this process.

5. Finger detangling and twists; Not everybody's hair can undergo the two mentioned above. Just because your friend finger detangles doesn't mean you should do the same. same for twists. If you've done the twisting thing on your hair more than once and you found out that you lost much, then try looking for another style to suit you. as for me, the last time I used my fingers to detangle, I lost so much hair and i felt so bad. thank God I didnt cry..sniff#

6.Combing hair when dry: Yes, you hear a crunchy sound when you do this and it sometimes feel your hair ripping off. PLEASE STOP!! That's why you have your spray bottle containing water and olive oil and whatever you want to add again. always spray this before combing or rub in a detangling hair lotion that you know will do the job before combing.

7. Sleeping with a naked hair.: Just like i mentioned in number 1, whatever happens, make sure you don't sleep with your hair bare on a cotton pillow or couch. If you know you can't do without dozing off, just get a satin pillow case.

source

8. Regular heat: Heat styling tools such as blow dryers, hair coilers and hair straighteners are not bad at all, but using them too often like every month can do a whole lot of damage leaving it limp and weak. If you're aiming for a full and long hair like the ones you see on youtube and pictures on our blog, then you're so NOT going to achieve that by using a hair straightener all the time. DON'T get me wrong o, once in a while, you can indulge. About 2-4 times a year isn't bad, it;s just like ice cream, you indulge once in a while, but it shouldn't be a new hair therapy for you. There are other ways one can achieve hair straightening which you can find here.
And when you use a hair straightener, you should apply a heat protection serum in form of liquid or spray before straightening.
If done well, it should even carry you for a month or 3 weeks.
When getting a straightener, make sure you get one that you can regulate it's temperature to it's desired degree so that you don't end up burning your hair and the house doesn't smell like burning tobacco. A minimal temperature from 100 degrees is not bad at all.
Hair burns at 451 degrees. Make sure you don't get to that temperature and know the type of your hair in particular. If your hair is fine, leaving the flat iron on that area for long will lead to serious damage.

9. Bad Eating habits: Eating junk and drinking small amounts of water won't get you anywhere if you're thinking of growing your hair to it's desired length. Even if you have a busy day, make sure your diet contains loads of vegetables and take good amount of water. If you're thinking of the multivitamin tablets that you require for your health due to the stress and other things you go through everyday, make sure biotin is included.
And ginseng shouldn't be excluded as well in order to keep you going for the day.

so, I ask, are you guilty of any of the above and you complain that your hair is not growing?
