Nibi Lawson Of Kinky Apothecary Has Been Slaying Her Natural Hair Even Before We Knew What It Was.
Nibi Lawson is one of the 'veterans' of the natural hair community here in Nigeria simply because she has been wearing her hair for so long we don't even know what she looks like without it. Also, her store/blog was the first official natural hair shop in Nigeria. She has been here since 2010.
The first time I met Nibi was at Social Media Week 2014 at the first and last natural hair event. Then, I thought her hair was the most gorgeous mane I had ever seen plus it was super defined and I resolved right there and then that I was going to grow my hair long.
Nibi's hair somewhat became a source of inspiration until I learned that she had been growing her hair for almost 10 years. Naturally, I backpedaled. I did not want to set myself up just yet. Notwithstanding, I still admire from afar and believe she's a perfect example of #NaijaHairCanGrow.
Let's feast our eyes, shall we?
Have you seen anything this stunning?

Unlike her fellow counterparts who still hide their hair ( side-eye Atilola), Nibi still blesses us with her glorious mane occasionally.
Cheers to length, volume and edges!

Throwback To That Time Genevieve Magazine Featured Three Naturalistas On Their Cover
I don't know about you but I'm so glad that natural hair is finally seeping into mainstream media such that it is gradually becoming a beauty standard of sorts.
Just last week, popular lifestyle magazine, Genevieve released their July issue. The cover featured four picture-perfect female celebrities - Mo'Cheddah, Beverly Naya, Adesua Etomi and Sika Osei - in what was tagged, Fearlessly Female.
A photo posted by Genevieve Magazine (@genevievemagazine) on
Although, the cover received a bit of backlash which was due to some of the quotes used but the most striking thing and perhaps the ONLY think I saw, was HAIR!
3 NATURAL HAIR CELEBRITIES on one cover? It has never happened before.
What made me even more excited was that we had previouly featured two of these celebrities on our site so it wasn't like they were using faux- hair even though I spot a bit of extentions. But that is completely normal. Also, they were styled by Tasala HQ - a leading salon which also specializes in natural hair.
This cover gave me so much joy. I thought, 'Finally, natural hair is finally being recognized and I'm so here for it' I know a few occasions where some celebrities have had to wear wigs and I kept wondering, 'why weren't they allowed to wear their hair or were they too lazy to hire a natural hair stylist that they just used a wig?'
Anyways, we welcome this new development with open arms and we hope it's the beginning of better things to come such that our natural hair stylists will be empowered and given the recognition they deserve.
What do you guys think about the covr?

Natural Hair Style - Finger Coils
A photo posted by African Naturalistas (@africanaturalistas) on
This hairstyle has it's pros and cons. On the pros, it's fairly easy to do and can last you a good three weeks! The cons are that it takes a couple of hours to achieve, and if you leave the style in for too long, it can mat up and begin to loc.
Some of the products you need can be found in our store! On freshly washed hair, apply our
Leave-In Conditioner
One or two of our range of Oils
Seal it all in with our Anti-Breakage Butter Lotion
And finally, apply our Twist and Curl Pudding to keep the finger coils in. Our Twist and Gel product is coming soon, but for now our pudding is a good substitute.
To maintain the hair style (and all other hair styles), use our Daily Hair Mist and Hair Growth Oil Elixir to keep your natural hair moisturized and well hydrated.
Visit our store to place your orders and definitely follow us on Instagram (@africanaturalistas) for lots of natural hair styles and inspiration!

8 Times Ade Balogun of Locitude inspired our loc-goals!
I've probably told every loc-head that cares to listen that I'll be joining them soon. Every since I began my natural hair journey, I've secretly desired to loc my hair. But because I was entering a completely new territory, I've pushed my loc-goals aside until further notice. Well, until I have figured out and made sense of the entire natural hair business. Now, that I have, I'm reluctant to take the plunge. Just like the Big Chop, it requires some mental preparation and I don't think I'm ready for that just yet. Also, I would like to see my waist length hair first.
But in the meantime, I'll keep admiring them from afar.
This week, we have the incredibly sweet Ade Balogun, the Chief Loc Officer at Locitude Enterprise and the convener of Loc Appreciation Day in Nigeria. I've met a on a few occasions and every time I admire her hair, she tells me I should come when I'm ready. I was scrolling through my Instagram feed the other day and I realized that we've never really featured her on the blog.
Well, I'm about to fix that.
Ade's locs are 6 years and 7 months old with a 4c texture and colour 1b. As much as we care about all the details of her regimen and whatnot, (Elizabeth, fix up) we're here for her progress pictures.
So, here are EIGHT times she made us want to take a trip to her studio.

7 Times Munachi Abii's Natural Hair Inspired Us
TWA never looked so good!
She's probably the only celebrity I've seen with an actual TWA
Growth! Slowly but steady!
Egdesssssss!
She's GORGEOUS!
Hey 'fro Hey!
A selfie is absolutely necessary
Munachi Abii is an ex-beauty queen, rapper, TV personality and all round gorgeous woman. When I noticed her natural hair, I was taken a back for a minute. Hold up! Beauty queens usually don't wear their natural hair boldly. This is actually commendable. Or maybe she just decided to test the waters just to see what her natural curls felt like. Whichever, we're glad she took that decision.
Muna is one that is totally in her element; completely comfortable in her own skin. She's not afraid to show off her hair in it's various stages other than protective styling all the time which is not a bad thing. It's just good to see the actual growth stages no matter how inconsequential.
From the photos above, the most glaring features are her full edgesss for days. It's obvious that she has taken time out to actually care for her hair or she just has good hair care practices. Speaking of which, I would love to know what her routine's like.
Of course, she loves to style her hair but would rather go for a good ol'fro or a puff.
Well ladies, this week I bring to you, Munachi Abii and her lush mane.
Love, coils and curls.

6 Photos That Show Adesua Etomi's Stunning Natural Hair
![]() |
This particular pompadour suits her perfectly. For those that don't mind their hair on their faces, this should be tried out. Elegant and classy for that event. |
This actress hasn't been in the game for that long but one thing we haven't failed to notice is her natural hair. With the ever increasing league of natural haired celebrities, we're glad to see yet another one that isn't shy to rock her hair.
Clearly one that likes to experiment, Adesua is about that glam life. In fact, it was a tad difficult to find pictures that show just her good ol' regular hair. Rather, we have more stylish pompadours and whatnot which of course goes to show that natural hair can work in professional settings. You just need to get it right.
I particularly love that she knows what works for her and has stuck to it. It makes the entire process of selecting styles less time consuming.
So this week, I bring to you Adesua Etomi's stunning natural hair.

This Photoset Of Di'ja's Natural Hair Will Give You All The Right Vibes
When Di'ja stepped into the Nigerian music scene over a year ago, my initial thoughts were, "Who is this mixed raced newbie with the guts to show off her natural hair unabashedly?" Apparently, she has roots in Sierra Leone and Northern Nigeria which of course explains her very strong facial features as well as her luscious natural hair. Along the line, she has warmed her way into our hearts and her 'fro never ceases to leave a lasting impression every.single.time.
Di'ja isn't your regular weave-wearing-cleavage-showing musician. In fact she has shown just how comfortable she is in her skin which of course includes the regular appearances of her natural hair in or out of a protective style. She doesn't stray too far away from her roots as well as her sense of self and that, to me is applaudable.
Di'ja likes to show off her 'fro at any given performance or photoshoot. A huge fan of cornrows and bantu knots, she makes sure her stylists don't overdo it. So far, we haven't had any reasons to complain which only means her team is doing something right.
This week, it's Di'ja and her natural hair giving off all the right vibes.

5 Times Omoni Oboli Showed Off Her Natural Hair
Glam it up! It's so important to have a stylist that can handle your hair. It makes all the difference.
Sigh. A protective updo. Win-win. I could rock this for weeks.
I want black hair so bad!
One way to style a shrinked hair.
Great twist outs!
Hello everyone!
Nollywood actress, Omoni Oboli is one of those celebrities that has been very vocal about her natural hair journey. The other day, she even shared some tips on her blog. We can only assume that she has at least gotten a hang of it just like the rest of us.
"Omoni curls" as she mostly calls it, is one that enjoys a lot of glam styles due to the nature of her job. More often than not, Omoni has a natural hair stylist that performs her magic before she steps onto the red carpet. Which of course leaves us drooling. I think it's safe to say that she's one of the most stylish natural - haired celebrity. Instead of covering it up in bales of weaves, she actually takes time out to get it styled and that to me is impressive.
She's also one to share her ups and down at different stages of her journey which makes it even more relatable. Plus, she never fails to point out the versatility of natural hair. She's not one for a signature style.
Here are five times her natural hair was actually desirable.
Which ones are your faves? (I know is hard, Lol)
