AN Hair line Challenge: Why use castor oil for your Natural Hair

Hello Naturalistas,

I hope you are having a great start to the week? I am excited because I have hairline updates but first, I want to share on why we are choosing to use Castor Oil for our Hair line challenge.

Castor Oil is a pale yellow Oil obtained from castor beans. It is filled with proteins, minerals and has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties which makes it very useful oil on your Natural hair journey.

Castor Oil's rejuvenating properties helps the stimulation of blood flow circulation in your scalp which increases the flow of nutrients there by helping your hair grow. For optimal results make sure to massage the scalp at the least 2-4 times weekly.

Other benefits of castor Oil
  • Regrows thinning Edges
  • Helps eliminate dry scalps and split ends.
  • Softens the Hair
  • Reduces Hair loss
  • Minimizes Hair damage
  • Treats Dandruff
  • Gives your natural hair that shine.
  • Overall natural hair care
However; The down side for me is that Castor Oil is too thick and can get gummy. To solve this it is diluted with Coconut Oil or Olive Oil whichever works for you. But seeing the result after one week I can't even complain.

Where can you get it? We have in the Our Online store or you can get from a pharmacy.

 2 Weeks Later...
We have just 3 people participating in the hairline challenge officially and I woulda loved to see more people participate but alas. We would be bringing updates as time goes on. In the meantime all the behind-the-scenes contestant what has your observations been?

Revisiting Shunned Natural Hair Products: Cantu Leave In Conditioner.

Happy Tuesday Ladies! Have you ever completely shunned a Natural Hair Product only to revisit it and find that it actually works wonders for your hair? When we first go natural, a lot of us are continuously tempted by the constant and steady flow of new products in the market that cater to the broadening Natural Hair Market.
Along the way, you find your 'Yes', 'No' and even 'Maybe I can try again Products.' One such product for me, that firmly landed in the 'No' Category was the well renowned and acclaimed Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioner.....

Diary of an Honest Naturalista: Week 121

This week was a mix and match of bitter and sweet. It started with the horrible experience of the evil traffic from Monday to Wednesday, and then ended with two days of rest in which I totally refused to lift a finger.

Monday morning was the worst. I spent five hours in the bus caught in traffic. Unfortunately, I did not carry a portable mirror in my bag so I had no idea of how messed up I was looking when I got to work.

On entering the office building, I greeted the security guy, who replied me with a strange look, but I assumed it to be his reprimanding stares for my lateness, so I just ignored it. I couldn’t be bothered with such fickle things in my state.

Immediately I got into the office space, I heard a dramatic scream from Yemisi.

“What happened to you?”

I was taken aback shortly before answering “Nothing. I was caught up in traffic for 5 hours. Can you imagine?”

“No, I mean what happened to you. You look like a mess.”

“Ehm, didn’t you hear me. I said I was in traffic for 5 hours. I am extremely tired. I even had to get down from the bus after a while, and walk a distance under the Lagos drizzles.”

“Is that why you look like this? After all, half of the women in this office were caught up in the same traffic too. Your hair looks like it was pulled all over by a lion.”

“Really?” I instantly touched my hair to understand what she was saying.

Without any further argument, she whipped out a mirror. “See for yourself.”

I always left my house with shiny well-moisturised twists looking good enough to eat, but ended up at work with something in between the strands of a mop stick and a mass of tangled wires.

What I saw was enough to make me faint!

“Oh my gosh. I can’t believe I have been walking all over looking like this. People must think I am mad.”

“Of course you are mad. How can you look like this?”

“I swear, my hair was very okay and good-looking when I left home.” I tried to defend myself. “Ha, see how this hair just disgraced me.”

I immediately ran to the rest room, and took a very look at myself, all the while absorbing the strange looks everyone was giving me.

First of all, several sections were stiff and standing up straight, rather that the fallen shiny state they were previously in. In my state of exasperation in the traffic, I had run my hands through my hair enough to roughen them and tangle them around one another. There were some visible white flakes. Obviously some of these foreign hair products weren’t manufactured with Lagos stress and traffic in mind.

I just stared and stared, and after about 3 minutes, I just burst into laughter. I think I had just had enough for the day, and I was really going mad for real.

I took out a hair ruffle from my bag, and packed my twists in one section. My edges were terrible that way, but I didn’t give a damn. The day was already over.

Who cares about beauty or looking good mehhnnn? On such a day as this, making it out in one piece is the real miracle. Lagos, thank you for transforming me to a confirmed mad girl.

Shrinkage and Natural Hair

In this video, I will discuss some ways to deal with shrinkage in natural hair.

Demystifying Fatty Alcohols

Hello Hello Ladies!

I got so much positive feedback on the Demystifying Cholesterol post that i'm considering doing a "Demystifying" series on various ingredients or products people want more information on. This week i'm taking a look at fatty alcohols.

When purchasing products we are often warned to avoid alcohols as they are drying to your hair. However alcohols can be categorised into two sections, good alcohols and bad alcohols. I want to elaborate more on the good kind you want in your products; fatty alcohols.

What are fatty alcohols?
Fatty alcohols are chemical compounds consisting of chains of carbon, hydrogen and hydroxide. They usually stem from  plants, animals and can be synthetically produced. They are distinct from all there other alcohols ( and the bad ones in particular) because are composed of 12 or more carbon  atoms which makes these compounds oilier, hence the term "fatty".

Tea Rinse for Natural Hair - My experience

Tea rinses are commonly talked about in the natural hair world, and a lot of natural hair bloggers exclaim the benefits of tea rinses (Reduces shedding, Makes hair softer, Helps hair grow, and Adds shine). We even have a very popular post about them here. I had never done a tea rinse until 2 weeks ago on an impromptu wash day.

I was deep conditioning my hair with my African Naturalistas Deep Conditioner, when I decided to have a cup of tea. I like to use my DC time to relax and I find tea to be very calming. Usually, I would simply throw the tea bags away, but this time I decided to put them to good use by doing a tea rinse (another way to use your tea bags is to let them cool and place over your eyes for a few minutes).

Anyway, I used regular tea, and left the tea bags in hot water for about 30 minutes while my DC was on.

After I was done with the DC, I shampooed it off, and used the now cool tea water to rinse my hair. From what I read, you can either rinse and leave the tea in your hair, or you can rinse again with water after a little while. I decided to rinse and leave it in, because I'd noticed my hair had been shedding quite a bit. Well, I don't know if the results are supposed to be immediate, but I still had quite a bit of hair come off (I hadn't detangled in 3 weeks, or before washing).

The hair was soft though, so I liked that. Funny thing happened - my comb started to shed too while combing after the whole process!

I've had the comb for years though, so I think it's time to move on.

My hair's been cornrowed and placed under my clip-ins since then, so I don't know if it's still shedding as much or if the tea rinse worked.

I would suggest that before you do a tea rinse, research the topic first. If I had done that, I would have DC'd AFTER the tea, not before. Discovering Natural has a video on Black Tea Rinses which I'll leave below, and she says that consistency is key - she does hers twice a month.

Have a good weekend,
Berry Dakara.

Hairspiration: Cornrows and Twists

Hello everyone!

This week, I bring to you another edition of natural hairspiration. This time, its an updo - a mix of cornrows and twists.

Take a look!

source
It's a very simple and chic style that can be worn in professional settings for those of you that are bold enough to pull off the look. Yeah, you'll be surprised. Some people don't think these styles are cool or trendy enough. Anyways, you could easily swap the cornrows for flat twists for a more stylish look.

What do you think?

Something you can rock?

'I don't ever want to relax my Natural hair' Mane Matters with Keren Hanson

Hi Naturals, how is the week going?

Enjoy...

Can you tell us who you are and what you do?

I'm Hanson Keren, I'm 20 years old; I recently just graduated from the Economics Department, University of Nigeria,Nsukka.

What are your thoughts about natural hair?
It's perfect,the texture is bliss.

When/why did you decide to go natural?
Last year December; My processed hair was really thinning out.

Did you do a BC or you transitioned?

I transitioned.

What was the experience like?

It was tough managing both textures, so i usually resorted to braids.

What was/is your biggest fear about going Natural?
My biggest fear was how I'd look and how fast it'll grow.

Do you have a regimen you stick to? What is it like?
I do; Well my daily moisturizing, shea butter and leave-in conditioner application, weekly washing, co-washing and oil to scalp massage. I intend to add the hot oil treatment soon. Then of course my hair mask.

What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
Well initially, shrinkage was annoying, now i live with it.

Do you think you are in it for the long haul or is it just a phase?
Most definitely for the long haul. Don't ever intend to relax my hair.

There are people that definitely have negative comments about you hair, how do you deal with that?
I honestly don't have negative comments, what annoys me though is the  " is this your hair " question.

What's your must have product and accessory?
Leave-in conditioner and my satin bonnets and scarfs.

What is your go-to style?
Braid outs.

What advice do you have for anyone just going natural?
Patience, hair always grows, just appreciate your growth process.

AN Hair line challenge: Week 1

Hello Naturalistas,

I hope your week has gotten off on a good start? Last week we introduced the #ANchallenge and we kicked off with getting out natural hairlines back. I would be answering questions and giving an update.
AN Challenge,

First lets deal with the questions:

When does the challenge end? Officially on the blog, 2 months but if your edges are that bad and you are seeing the improvement you will be encouraged to continue but generally I think 2 months is enough to see a significant change.

What if I don't have castor Oil? You can use coconut oil and if you have both, you can mix it together.

When is the deadline for submitting pictures? Today! Okay! Let's leave it at tomorrow 23rd September, 2015.

Challenge Update:

AN challenge
My Hairline
For the past on week I have been using castor Oil on my edges every night and I have had one major challenge so far ''Oil patches" on my pillow case. A reader commented on Instagram about her own experience and since she uses satin pillowcase it is more disgusting. If this is also one of your challenges here is what I advised;

Change the time; I know I mentioned put in the Oil when you are about to sleep and that is me just assuming it is a convenient time for everyone and ofcourse I am wrong. So, if the oil bothers you so much change your timing. Put yours in the morning as against at night.

Also, you can live with it. I mean you know your goal right? So why let that bother you? If you are like me and you really don't mind changing your pillow case weekly just for this period then by all means just ignore.

Diary of an Honest Naturalista: Week 120

Remember when I mentioned the fact that I wasn’t happy with my life at the moment, cos everything seemed dreary, and I felt I could do more than I currently am? Well, I am very happy to say I have finally started something.

I am now making Ankara accessories. I make sturdy hand bands, head bands, flowers, etc. The truth is I actually learnt the craft online, and was pretty surprised to find out how easy it actually was. For now, I sell mostly to my personal contacts and others who admire the accessories on them. It’s still small stuff for now but I know all big things start from small things. The bottom line is that for now, I am fulfilled, and that is what matters.

As said, I went to see Dimeji’s parents last Sunday, and to keep up good appearances, I had to make sure my hair was well behaved, lol. I packed it well with matching ankara hair ruffles and hair comb.
After some minutes of conversation with Dimeji’s mum, she commented on how she liked my hair accessories. She then opened her wallet to hand me N4000 and asked me to get her some. I immediately rejected her money, and told her that I actually made it, and it was a business I recently started.

Saying that to her made me feel proud of myself, not because I was trying to impress her, but because for the first time in my life, I could actually say I ‘owned’ something.

“Really? You made this yourself?” She tilted back, and looked at me.

“Yes ma.” I said.

“That’s great. You must be really enterprising.” She looked at the accessories again, really impressed.
Me? Enterprising? If only she knew. “Thank you ma.” I replied humbly.

“So how much will you sell a combination of your collection to me?” She asked.

“No ma. No o. Don’t worry. I can’t collect money from you. I will bring some for you.” I protested. See how my potential in-law wants to put me in trouble by making me look like one greedy stingy daughter.

“You won’t collect money from me? And why is that?” She looked quizzical.

“Ha, no ma. You are Dimeji’s mum na. How would I collect money from you?” I began to wonder if this woman was just testing me. If so, then I mustn’t fail this test, even though I didn’t know the right answer.

“Anna, when did you start this business?”

Hmm, trouble was brewing. “Last month ma.”

“So if I asked you to give me ten thousand naira worth of hair accessories, you would give me for free?”

“Ehm…” I hesitated and thought for a while. “Yes ma.” I said assuredly.

Justin Timberlake thinking yes
Source
“That’s nice.” She flashed me a smile before proceeding. “And the next week, I ask you to make a thousand naira accessories for my sister who likes your work, but cannot pay for it, so I want to give her as a gift. Would you charge me?”

“I won’t charge you ma.”

“And two weeks later, I ask for five thousand naira worth for my female pastor’s birthday gift? I can just come and get it from you for free?”

“Most probably.” I said, suddenly unsure.

“And where exactly will you get the money to purchase the materials you would use to keep making these free accessories from me?

I had goofed. I began to see that I was failing this assumed test.

“I am sure you see where I am going. You can’t do business by refusing to collect money from people just because you like them or they are your friends.”

“But I can’t collect money from you ma. You are family.” I vehemently protested.

“And that is exactly why you should charge us. As someone who is newly starting business, friends and family are the ones that should support you and patronise you with their funds. They are your primary market, and the ones whose patronage would expand your market. There are no sentiments in business, and you cannot afford not to charge everyone. You need all the support you can get.”

I began to see what she was saying. It was obvious I had no great knowledge about how to successfully run a business, and I had already started goofing. “Thank you ma.” I said, really humbled this time.”

“You are welcome. And don’t forget to come to me anytime you need any advice on business. Now, take this money, and make me some accessories.”

I dared not hesitate. I took the money immediately. She gave me N4000 but I planned to give her N5000 worth. It suddenly occurred to me that she wasn’t even going to use them, and was just looking for a way to support me, seeing that she is on TWA.

And that was how I got my SME 101 course from the most unexpected source. Who would have thought?

DIY LOUNGE - ABOUT CARRIER OILS AND ESSENTIAL OILS

Hello guys, I know you all are spoiling for a DIY post ( atleast that's what Sundays should be all about on AN) but please do not vex for me! I'm having issues getting materials but I promise we would be doing major DIYs next week. Let me give you an insight, we would be learning how to make hair accessories!!! So, ANTICIPATE!!!
Last two weeks, I made a major "natural hair faux pas ", I referred to almond oil as an essential oil (it's actually a carrier oil). Some darlings were quick to point out my mistake! Shout out to all those who corrected me, you guys made me vex and I went ahead to read all I could find about these oils!  On today's post I'm going to be writing on these two categories of oils, their uses, differences and examples... Someone just said " this Bukola is just so nice and selfless" ( I know, thank me later).
                     CARRIER OILS
Carrier oils are vegetable oils gotten from the fat of plant seeds and nuts. Some examples of carrier oils are argan oil, avocado oil, castor oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, carrot seed oil, frankincense oil, grapefruit oil, etc.
                      USES
- they help carry essential oils into the skin and scalp
- they are used to make natural creams, lotions, conditioners, lip balms etc..
- they are used to dilute essential oils and other oils .

                   ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils are oils extracted from plants. An essential oil contains the fragrance and therapeutic benefits of the plants it was extracted from. Some examples of essential oils are lavender, Rosemary, peppermint etc...
                   USES
- they are highly medicinal
- they can be burned as incense
- they are used for massage
- they have scalp stimulating properties

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CARRIER OILS AND ESSENTIAL OILS

- essential oils are gotten from leaves and roots, carrier oils are pressed from seeds and nuts.
- essential oils have their own aroma (which is usually strong), carrier oils have a faint aroma.
- essential oils evaporates, carrier oils do not evaporate
- essential oils are stored in glass jars, carrier oils can be stored in plastic containers
- essential oils are thin oils with thick aroma, carrier oils are thicker oils with mild aroma
- carrier oils go foul after awhile but essential oils never goes foul, instead they lose all their healing and therapeutic properties.
- carrier oils are to be applied in a large volume, essential oils are highly effective, so you only need few drops.

Now that you have enough information on hair oils, go into the world and be good ambassadors of the natural hair community!!

My lovely "correcters",  how do you like my comeback?( lol )

I hope you learnt a thing or two?
You know your questions, opinions and feedbacks

What To Do To Make Hairstyle Last

Dealing with Frizz-Prone Natural Hair African Naturalistas DiscoveringNatural
By DiscoveringNatural

Making a style last on a kid's hair for a long time can be a challenge at time. A way that some people fix this issue is by adding extensions/attachment to the hair. However for those of us, like myself, who is not too fond of adding hair to a young child's hair, we have to come up with some unconventional ways.

What do I do?
Let's look at the scenario of this hairstyle that my younger daughter (Lil Sis) has been wearing for 2 weeks now, today is wash day. Her hair gets very frizzy easily and she encounters a lot of fly away. She is extremely tender headed, so doing styles like cornrows, flat twists and other styles that have a potential of lasting longer is out of the question. Here is the style I did for her.

Dealing with Frizz-Prone Natural Hair African Naturalistas DiscoveringNatural
Day 1 of this style
I mentioned on my instagram page, DiscoveringNatural, that I will be redoing this style after one week, which is usually the longevity of her hairstyles. One of my followers, asked if I could get in to last longer, I paraphrase here. I was glad to take on the challenge.

Here are some things I ensured was done:
  • Keep hair moisturized as needed
  • After moisturizing, use tie down a scarf to lay down the hair. Watch how it is done
  • At night ensure that hair is covered with a bonnet or scarf
At the end of the first week, here is what her hair looked like:

In the picture above, the top section shows hair before re-styling. Re-styling did not  involved redoing the hair. Another tip is to restyle hair without doing any actual manipulation of the hair strands. Styles such as twists are great for regrouping into a variety of other hairstyles.

The latter style lasted till middle of the 2nd week, when I then undid some of the twists that were too frizzy to wear out. I did not run a comb on through the hair, but used my fingers instead. I only use a comb once a month, but use my fingers as a comb at any other time.

This was able to last till the end of the week.

Tutorial: The Faux Afro Pony Puff

Hello, hello ladies!

Today I want to show you how to make an afro ponytail on natural hair. This is a great protective style and can go two to three days depending on how well you wrap you hair at night.

Lupita for Vogue Magazine

I had a different post for today, but I'm rescheduling it to bring you the gorgeousness that is Lupita Nyong'o! Most people in the world would recognize her from her taking over Hollywood after her Oscar-winning appearance in the critically-acclaimed film, "12 Years A Slave." She took the fashion world by storm and has been a media darling for the past couple of years. She has a few movies out soon, and bought the movie rights for Chimamanda Adichie's book, 'Americanah,' so we have a lot more to watch out for from this AFRICAN NATURALISTA!

Her second Vogue Magazine cover came out this week and everyone, including me, is in a frenzy over the beautiful photos and I thought I should share some of my favorites here. Let's bask in the knowledge that natural hair isn't something to be ashamed of. She rocks her TWA with style and finesse, and I think that should inspire anyone who's having some difficulties as a new natural.

Enjoy the photos all from Vogue.com!

Have a nice weekend :)
