Is Natural Hair care really more expensive?

Hello Naturalistas, How are you all doing? Kinks and all?

I recently saw on twitter a guy saying that Natural hair care is cheaper and someone replied insinuating that it's infact not cheaper but more expensive.

The question now, Is Natural hair care more expensive?

If I am being totally honest, when I had my hair relaxed, it was way cheaper for me but one thing I realised after asking a few people this question is that we are all different and our difference will affect our response to this question.

One person I asked in a heartbeat said keeping her natural hair is cheaper because she knows how to make some styles herself and it will still look good as against having to buy weave all the time. Another person was of the opinion that if we add weaves and natural hair salons into the mix then natural hair is not cheaper.

At the end of the day, the answer cannot be straight forward. There are different factors involved.

Products, I think natural hair products are more expensive considering the amount of things you need to buy but then you don't buy products every month.

Hair styling; This I would say natural hair is cheaper, except when you add extensions to the mix.

Salons: This one too is another tricky one. Read The Big question: Natural Hair Salon

Time: I would say Natural hair is more expensive.

I would want to add stress and events but then you also know the answer to that. I understand that this is not everyone's reality like I stated initially, our experiences differ, but for some of us this is the reality.

While by the look of things natural hair care is looking more expensive then relaxed hair, and whether it is more expensive or cheaper to maintain our natural hair, we do it for the love and for healthier hair regardless of the cost.

Let's talk. From your experience is maintaining your natural hair more expensive or cheaper?

AN Hairline Challenge: My Natural Hair is not reacting to Castor Oil

Hello Naturalistas,

I trust your week is off to a great start. Do have a wonderful week ahead.

How has the challenge been? I have had to start putting my Castor Oil in the morning because of the Oil Patches  on my pillow case (So much a girl can endure) and I notice that the process is becoming easier. My only challenge this week is that I am 'Monitoring' my hair so closely it feels like this Castor Oil 'thing' is not working. Which brings me to what I want to talk about today and also this;

We got this comment on the last post

I decided to give my robust response here *chuckles*.
I researched on castor oil and I saw alot of debate. There are people that are swearing by it and people that also claim it doesn't do it's 'magic' on their hair and here is my conclusion; We are different and so is our hair and we react differently and for Mosunmoluwa, I don't even think that's her issue and here are a few things I would suggest if you are in her shoes:

  •  Stop Obsessing and breathe; It's serious but it's not that serious. Biko breathe!
  • Take care of your hair overall; Not just testing out this Oil or that Oil because at this point you need to take proper care of your hair. Shampoo, Deep condition on a regular and Moisturise and I think you will see better reaction on your hair when you are trying out these Oils.
  • Give it time; Your hair is harsh today and it's not just one deep conditioning that will help with that but several over time. It will get better with time as you stick to your regimen.

And if you are like me on this challenge and are already obsessing and worrying about weekly changes. Breathe and celebrate the small edge that is growing back, keep at it and let the progress however little encourage you.

So, We are celebrating Progress ;
Contestant #2 after 2 weeks

What will you say to Mosunmoluwa?

Hair Growth Supplements for Natural Hair?

Hello Naturalistas,

How are you? Kinks and all? I got a question from a naturalista last week and I decided to address this here.

In her words ¨ My hair is growing too slowly. Someone recommended *** or ***. What do you think?¨

I know this is legit concern that most of us have, so I decided to say what I think here to benefit more people.

My first answer will be a big NO, don't take it. I decided to put sentiments aside and do small research about it, I will spare you all the vitamins and science long story. I found a few things;

If your hair is not growing, I think it's your fault. You're trying to supplement for vitamins that you can get from a balanced diet. The truth is that Hair grows however slowly, it grows. There are some facts about your hair that will help change things.

So, after the research, I would still say NO but this time a more informed one, because I read recounts of people with bad experiences with these supplements but your body may react differently to it. There is a probability of side effects which I don't think any wants to deal with, but to be on the safe side, I think before you take any supplement, speak with a doctor to be sure that it is good for you and won't cause any side effects for your system.

But there are a few links we have on Hair Growth that should help you,

Excerpts from the 2nd African Naturalistas online meetup

Hi Naturalistas
As most of you already know, yesterday, African Naturalistas had its online meetup. The meetup was initiated for naturalistas to share with each other on issues they may be having or basically unanswered questions they'd want some answers to.

Here are some of the discussions from yesterday, I'm sure people that missed it may find some interesting bits

"I do a strong protein prepoo once a month: both hydrolysed (to fortify the hair from the inside) and unhydrolyzed proteins (to protect it from the outside). For example, whole eggs, SAA, hydrolysed Wheat protein, other Amino Acids, Milk Protein, Molasses and regular mayonnaise are used. I do add avery little protein to my prepoo each week though to fortify my hair for the washing process.
Weekly, I prepoo with things like Ghee or unsalted butter, a humectant, my butter mix(Cocoa butter, Shea butter, EVOO, EVCO, Avocado oil, Ben Oil) for at least 3 hours (sometimes overnight if there's time). I shampoo only with Black soap. Then deep condition with a mix of only penetrating ingredients; things like Agave nectar or Maple Syrup, EVOO, EVCO, Avocado Oil, Ben Oil, etc added to a deep conditioner. I rinse it out with ACV solution, Then I style with a mix of enriched leave-in conditioner, butter mix and gel/setting lotion.
I dust every three months, clarify monthly, massage my scalp with essential oils twice a week, wrap my hair at night in a satin scarf and sleep on a satin pillowcase. I try other products, and do not use all the aforementioned at once. It might sound like much, but I do enjoy grooming myself, lol."
I copied this from an interview I read but I'm wondering what she means by unsalted butter and mayonnaise (are they ones we eat?). Apart from shea butter what other butters can one use as a sealant?

Answer:  I think she means regular unsalted butter that people eat, like oldenburger, kerrygold, etc. Protein treatment every months? Prepoo every week? Clarify twice a week? This ladies process seems overwhelming, and like an overkill to me. How long can one keep up with this kind of complex regimen? One year, three years, ten years? As I would say, just do what works for you.

No wonder someone's mom was accusing her of tempting a baby by putting food in her hair! Butter, eggs, is she baking a cake? And that hair regimen, how does she find the time to have a job or study or do anything else? Please can someone tell me what SAA is? And I've never heard of dusting! What on earth is that? I thought dusting was something you got other people to do to your furniture.

Answer: Lool. Dusting is when you trim your hair, by taking so little inches off that it looks like dust when you see it on the floor. SAA??? Errhhhmmmm, how about I don't know that one. I finally found the meaning of SAA. SAA – Silk Amino Acid. Some people can like to work sha, lol

"I'm Dayo, 10th month of transitioning; still got the textured end so as to be able to manage my hair. I have scanty, almost-non-existent front hairline; reason why I decided to go natural in the first place. I've been following/trying to follow ur posts (your hair terms/terminologies s/times throw me). I'm already having ideas on how to manage/look forward to the all-grown, natural head mass; tho for now I'm at a loss of what to do not to stress d front (any pull stresses/tears it). been on caps; fixed 2ce in the last year. don't knw exactly where to start and what to start with to strengthen my hair. and what, in simple naija/lagos language is Crochet braids?"

Answer:
Crochet braids is when you fix your braids rather than braid the actual hair. I think that's simple enough. As for you not stressing your hair, I feel less combing should help, I've also heard of the magic of castor oil with time. Maybe you can try it out.

In order not to stress, for now please, ease on the extensions. And if you even use one, let it not be too tiny and tight. Wigs, and hats may not be your best friend now, as the elastics rub around your edges. Then if you can lay your hands on castor oil and coconut oil, it will be great

I have no idea what the local name for crochet braids is. Something similar is tree braids, which is called Fish bone in Nigeria

"Another question I have is concerning locs. By accounts, it's a process to get them done. How many times did you have to visit the loctician to get the hair properly loc'd? Can they be done in patterns or haphazardly?"

Answer: Takes 4-6 weeks to get permanently locked o, and you must go there every 6 weeks, and it might take longer if the circumference of your hair is like baby edges. But once it is locked, then you can visit the loctician like once a month or once in 6 weeks to relock. It depends on if you want a scalpy-looking dread, or otherwise.

"Here's my question... bantu knots and knot outs! I would not wear bantu knots in public, but would like to try bantu knot outs. I failed miserably 2 years ago when I tried them. I think I might have put too much gel or I just didn't let the knots dry out before take down. Point is I didn't have any curls to speak of.

Any pointers?"
Answer: Looooollll. I think the products used to set the curls count, then if you allow the hair dry well too. Also the hair texture counts. I know ladies will type 3 hair always have better-defined curls when it comes to bantu knot outs, but doesn't mean type4 ladies too don't achieve it. Give bantu knots a try too. They would look great on you.
Make sure your hair is dry before you take down the bantu knots.

"Challenges I'm facing now are tangles and moisture retention. My hair coils up around each other when it come in contact with water and this causes horrible tangles, so detangling becomes a nightmare. And my hair is super dry like really crunchy I moisturise by spraying a mix water, cream and oil and then seal with raw shea butter but my hair still dries up before the day is over. I don't know what to do about these issues"

Answer: As far as tangles, you need to keep your hair stretched by braiding, twisting, banding, threading, etc.

As for the hair getting dry, maybe try adding glycerine or aloe vera juice to your spray bottle. I have also heard that keeping it in the fridge so it's cold, helps seal the cuticles of your hair.

Help. I'm between the devil of relaxers and the deep blue sea of stubborn natural hair

Source
Hi AN,

I don't know if anyone would read this or better still if anyone can help. I came across this blog a couple of minutes ago because right now, I am at a breaking point in my life. I stand here with a dark and lovely kit I
purchased from walmart, and I am about to go back on that road I left a year and a half ago. I have been transitioning for close to two years and had my big chop last 6 months. Since the big chop, my hair just became something else...like it has a mind of its own. It is now annoyingly stubborn, I can only comb through it. When there is a conditioner in it. when its dry, it recoils and forms the thick mass of stubborn bunch. To add salt to my injury. Ehn...my hairline is receding...looks like they are on a race. Its so awful that my hubby is also concerned sef. he blames the hairline on this my natural hair craze. Now, I look more like a tortoise with a funny looking
mass of hair at the back.

My experience with relaxers made me quit altogether. When i used to relax my hair, there was no time my scalp didnt get burnt, no matter the kit or the salon. I tried so many remedies, left my hair unwashed for like 4 months, put the relaxers in the fridge, added olive oil...nothing worked. I just need someone to talk to because holding this relaxer makes me feels like I am faced with the devil. Behind me with my stubborn mass of hair Isn't
attractive either.

Can anyone hear me...please help if you can.

B

Hey B,

Easy easy. How are you doing? I can almost feel your pain from your email. Sorry about what you are going through. Trust me, many women have gone through it too. The good news is that there's always a solution to every problem.

Let me ask. When you were transitioning, did you read natural hair care or transitioning blog posts? You sound like you did not, but I might be wrong. If so, forgive me.

The reason why I say so is that, as a natural hair carrier, you are supposed to know that you should never comb your hair dry, never!  It won't work. These are the basics of natural hair care. As for your hair being stubborn, regular and proper deep conditioning over time will sort that out. Have you been deep conditioning?

As for your receding hairline, I can tell you that it is not going natural that made your hairline recede. In fact, going natural makes one's receding hairline correct itself. So let me ask, have you been using weaves an extensions that have been pulled to tight on your edges? This is the number one cause of receding hairline.

From your experience with relaxers, I would say you shouldn't relax your hair. Follow the suggestions I have stated in the mail, which is stop combing your hair dry, Deep Condition regulary, and watch how those extensions hold your edges. And if you want to answer any of the questions, reply me.

I wish you the best.

I need to know more about my Natural Hair

Source

Hi  AN

Saw you on Moments with Mo when the show was about rounding up. I am interested in the Natural hair thing. I have been on natural hair since last year December. Even though I have been doing all sorts of extensions since then. But will have to relax my hair for a friend's wedding next week. After which I would love to go natural.

There are some few things I would  like you to know about my hair.
1. My is hard when its not relaxed for a while. Its painful when I comb it.
2.The edge of my hair (the front hair) is breaking and the entire hair is not healthy.
3.I have been retouching and treating my hair for more than a decade now.
4.I have been using natural sheer butter on my hair  for 2 years.

Please help. What can I do?

Thanks

G

Hi G,

Thanks for your mail. I hope you are enjoying your natural journey so far.

Straight to a few responses. First of all, I will like to say that you don't have to relax your for a wedding, whether you are on the train or not. The fact that you will consider relaxing your hair because of a wedding is even making me wonder your real reason for going natural. Please, read this post and the comments for more info.

As for your hair being hard and painful to comb, this is not exclusive to you. I suspect you haven't been doing things like deep conditioning, regular moisturising, combing hair wet, etc to your hair. Natural Hair has to be properly pampered to be enjoyed.

The edges of your hair are thinning, most probably as a result of abuse of extensions and chemicals. You have to ease on the extensions so your edges can recover. Pls, read this post.

In the mean time, I will advise that you read our blog well, and get various tips on how to maintain natural hair.

I am going natural and confused

N:B: Hi everyone. I hope you haven't forgotten the African Naturalistas Online Natural Hair meet up holding tomorrow. Trust me, you don't want to miss this, and your location anywhere in  the world doesn't matter. Click here for more details.

Now onto today's post.

Hi AN,

My last retouch was on the 12th of September 2012. however, I have come to the conclusion that my hair isn't growing any more and I would love to chop it all off and start afresh. if I do this, I stand the risk of looking like

a primary school student and so I'd prefer to do it gradually. Right now, I made twist with the dreads attachment, but I cut off about 1 inch of the hair before making it.

I would love to get a proper hair regimen to follow to enable my hair grow and to aid the going natural process cos I know I have a huge task ahead of me since my hair gets really difficult to come and all.

Thank you.

T

Hi T,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. I really don't think there's a big deal in chopping your hair off. Who doesn't want to look younger?  Lol.

However, if you really feel uncomfortable doing that, how about chopping it off, and using a wig to cover it till it grows out to a substantial length. This will enable you to start caring for your natural hair early enough.

Don't worry about the task ahead of you, it is not as sumbersome as you might think.

What are you trying to achieve with your potential regimen? Is it long hair, healthy hair, soft hair, or a combination of all? This will help you pick a regimen wisely. I can't really recommend, cos there is no hard and fast rule, but I can guide you.

So I suggest that you read the following posts. By the time you are done with them, you should be able to come up with something feasible.

My 2 year old's natural hair is breaking

Source

Hi AN,

Please, I have a 2 yr old daughter with natural hair but of late the hair has been cutting tremendously. I have never applied relaxer to the hair before but it is terribly breaking. Do you advise I totally cut off the hair and start all over again? Also, what products will you recommend for her? Also, please what's your take on a new born baby's hair? Should it be cut once she is a year old or not? At times, the hair gets weak and then begins to cut all by itself.

I will expect your reply, please.

Thanks.

A

Good Day A,

Thanks for your enquiry. Firstly, for your 2 yr old daughter, I don't think it is necessary to totally cut off her hair. If her hair is breaking because it is very dry and hard, I recommend that you do a moisture deep conditioning of avocado pear, coconut oil, coconut milk, honey, and aloe vera gel on her hair. If that is not the case, please, do a protein deep conditioning treatment of mayonnaise, olive oil, honey, and shea butter on her hair. We also sell our African Naturalistas deep conditioning treatment, which has properly balanced both moisture and protein, and I recommend that you get one if you don't want to bother getting all these mix and doing it yourself. Doing this DC treatment on your daughter's hair every two weeks should be able to sort the breakage out. For her hair cream, I recommend that you get our Lavie Life hair butter, which helps with alopecia and controls breakage. I also recommend that you spray her hair with a mixture of water and olive oil every morning and night. This will make sure her hair is well moisturised at all times. Below are a few tips I gave other mothers in your situation, and worked.

1. Don't use heat on her hair

2. Don't use extensions on her hair (at least until the breakage is over)

 3. Let her sleep with her hair covered with satin bonnet or scarf. Never let her sleep with her head bare (to protect her edges)

4. Don't use the tiny blue comb or any small comb for her hair. Comb with a big wide-toothed comb

5. Wash often and do the Deep conditioning to help get reduce breakage

6. Don't use anything that has petroleum products or mineral products. Use hair butters instead.

7. Avoid using rubber bands as much as possible. If you must use rubber band, make sure its first of all soaked in olive oil, so as not to snag her hair strands

8. Let her eat as much proteins as possible

N.B: Don't be anxious, everything will correct itself in the long run

As for the new born baby's hair,  you should let it grow out. Should it get weak, and start falling out, cut it all off, and start a new growth phase.

I hope this mail has been of great help to you. If you have more questions, feel free to contact us.

Best Regards

Please help: I lost my hair to weaving with extensions

Source
Hi AN,

I wove my hair with extensions years ago and it was very uncomfortable, especially along the lines of the parting but I didn't know the extent of damage until I loosened it. The hair along the parting line fell right out.

I didn't think anything of it cause I figured it would grow out so it wasn't until years later that I was advised to quit relaxing cause the patch was spreading. I could show you a picture.

I need your advise on how to grow that part out back. I did cut my hair over 3 years ago now and I have done the clean swipe twice. Everywhere else but that part has grown back. It is closing up (I pray) but I really need to know what to do.

I have to keep wearing wigs as a result or fix a weave although am careful about that part. So, help! Please?

A

Hi A,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. What happened to you is so unfortunate. I guess the hairdresser pulled your hair too tight.

You are suffering from traction alopecia. I am happy that you have seen some changes in your hair over time.

I would strongly advise that you stay off extensions for a while, please.

Continual use of extensions would cause the recovery of your hair to be minimal of even non-existent. Try sticking to wigs for about one more year, and you should see a big leap in the change.

Also stay off relaxers and harmful chemicals for a while too, its good you are already doing that, at least, till your hair recovers fully.

You would really need patience. In the mean time, you can get castor oil from a supermarket. Dilute it with olive oil or coconut oil, and massage that area every morning and night, after spraying a little water on it. You can add a drop of lavender oil to this mix, if  you can lay your hands on it.

If you are interested, I sell a hair butter that helps with alopecia, but that is only if you are interested.

Please, please, and please, once your have fully recovered from your traction alopecia, stay away from Ghana Weaving.

I hope I was able to help you.

Best Regards

Help, my hair keeps breaking and pulling out.

Hi AN,

Please my hair is so weak and its breaking, it's natural but am not comfortable with it at all.
Here's the hair sample (*attaches sample), it keeps pulling out. Please am expecting your reply soonest.

A

Hi A,

Thank you for your enquiry. Sorry about your issue. But please, don't get too worried or stress yourself.

Lemme quickly ask you some questions, before I recommend what to do. Has it always been weak, or did you just start having that problem recently? Did you face any stressful event in the past six months? Have you been on any form of prolonged medication in the past six months? Did you get pregnant or put to bed recently? Were you on any form of diet in recent times? Do you have any form of medical condition like cancer, etc.?

If you are not facing any of the above, from what you have described, I suspect you have an issue with protein balance on your hair, thus making your hair weak. If that is the case, the problem is very easy to solve.  Please, do a protein deep conditioning treatment of mayonnaise, olive oil, honey, and Shea butter on your hair.

If however the problem is a moisture balance problem (which I don't think it is), I recommend that you do a moisture deep conditioning of avocado pear, coconut oil, coconut milk, honey, and Aloe Vera gel on your hair.  We also sell our African Naturalistas deep conditioning treatment, which has properly balanced both moisture and protein, and I recommend that you get one if you don't want to bother getting all these mix and doing it yourself. Doing this DC treatment on your hair every two weeks should be able to sort the breakage out.

For more info on how to find out whether its a moisture or protein balance. Please, read the details below

From science of black hair
(When Wet or Dry) Stretches slightly and returns to its original length without breaking, you are balanced! Stick with maintaining!
(When Wet or Dry) Stretches a little more than normal then breaks, you need more protein in your regimen.
(When Wet or Dry)Stretches, stretches, stretches with no significant breakage yet, add a bit more protein to your regimen.
(Wet)- Feels weak, gummy, mushy, or limp, you need to add more protein to your regimen.
(Wet or Dry) Experiences very little to no stretching, and simply snaps or breaks, you need to increase the moisture in your regimen.
(Dry) Feels rough, tough, hard, dry, tangly, brittle, or any combination of those, you need more moisture in your regimen.

Is Red Palm Oil really good for the hair

Source

Hi AN,

Okay, so I am interested in getting the hair care range which you offer.....however, I am a little confused about the ingredients in the Deep conditioner...You have on there, Palm Oil? Do you mean Palm kernel Oil? Or actually Palm Oil? Reason I ask is that I could have sworn I read somewhere that this should not be applied directly to the hair. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, can the tea rinse replace/substitute that of the apple cider vinegar (basically looking for a cheaper option..lol). Also, can my regular green tea bag or Tetley black tea bags suffice for this rinse?

Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

Regards,
A.

Hi A,

Thanks for contacting us, we really appreciate it.

As for the DC mix, yes, it has palm oil as an ingredient - red palm oil, not palm kernel oil. You can read several benefits of using palm oil on the here in these links

You will find many more links, if you do your search. I strongly doubt that it is bad for the hair, but I would never use it as a lone ingredient for my hair, as it would be so messy, and would stain everywhere. Maybe that's why you were warned not to apply it directly to your hair.

Tea rinse and ACV do completely different stuffs for the hair. ACV is used to get rid of build up on the head, especially for your scalp. Tea rinse is actually good for conditioning hair, dandruff issues, etc, depending on the type of tea you use. ACV is very cheap affordable, so it shouldn't be an issue.

We hope we have been able to help you with your enquiry.

Please, let us know the products you want to order, so we can deliver to you.

Help! I have styling and product issues

source

Hello ma'am
I''m so glad to have come in contact with your blog because now, I know I'm not the only one keeping natural hair even when 95% of my friends have gone perming due to the stubbornness or whatsoever

The thing is I've been keeping my natural hair for a while and I've been using wool to keep it natural (twisted wool..alitmakasa), if you know what I mean and I'm about to loosen it but I'm scared due to what I wanna do to it next and so I need your advice desperately
I need to know what shampoo to use, gel , conditioner or whatever i need to get to work things out and keep my hair free from wool for a while cos I'm starting to get tired
My hair needs fresh hair. I've tried dove, olive oil conditioner and dark and lovely's leave in shampoo and I'm currently thinking of getting a good shampoo
By the way where can i get the tea bags you mentioned?..in Lagos?

I'll be glad if you can answer my questions
God bless
S

Hi S,

Thanks for contacting us. Firstly, I will like to say that I am glad you found the blog useful. From your mail, I gather that you have had Natural Hair for quite a while but stiull face a whole lot of challenge in maintaining it.

Styling is a major challenge for a lot of naturalistas, but the truth is that you would really need creativity to be stylish. When you do a twist out, you can fashion it out to look different, it depends on the way you style. I think you should research more on hair styling.

As for products to use, as a naturalista, you should know that being a product junkie is not the way forward. In fact, you should place less emphasis on products, and more emphasis of the technique.  But the most important thing is that your products should mostly consist of natural ingredients. If you read more of our posts, you will understand. If you use shampoo, try not to use the ones with sulphates, as they dry out natural hair. I personally do not use shampoo, I use a clarifying pudding or liquid castille soap, so I cannot tell you what shampoo to use. But the main thing is that your shampoo should be sulphate free, which is very rare. Any natural gel should work for you, and any good conditioner too. Remember it is not about the product, but the technique.

As for tea bags, any black tea bag should be fine, even lipton.

In the mean time, I think you should click on the 'deep conditioning' under the categories gadget on the right hand side, and read about deep conditioning, if you don't do it yet. This would help you

I know I haven't been able to answer all your questions, as the whole natural hair thing cannot be treated in a single mail, but I hope you find this reply useful.

Best Regards
