5 Tips on how to regrow the edges of your hair (edges gone wild!)

Do you know that I can easily tell the health of your hair, just by looking at your edges? Many of my friends are relaxed, and I can tell someone who has been abusing their hair with relaxers or extensions by observing their edges. Many people think their hair is at its optimum state because it seems healthy, but many times I beg to differ because their edges are 'just okay'. I use this term because it is obvious that their edges is not as full as God actually created them to be.

Some people have very delicate edges, and they have to be careful. As for me, I have one of the fullest but most delicate edges ever, as I always mention on this blog. Any slight mishandling, my edges are gone. This is also due to the fact that the hair around my edges is baby hair, and can't stand stress. But the upside to mine is that my edges are very forgiving. After some mishandling and loss of edges, it’s always quick to grow back, and fast at that. The thing is many people's edges are not as forgiving, so ease on those tight extensions, and have mercy on your edges.

And please, before you blame your lack of hair around your edges on genes, please, check your baby and childhood pictures. If you had healthy edges then, it means genes are not your problem, but lack of proper hair care. But if you are like 60 years old, maybe we can pardon you. Even then, if the old women in this post have great edges, what is your excuse?

These are different views of my edges in the pic below, with the back of my hair wrapped, and the front pinned inside. The pictures on the left were the ones taken four days after I took down my beautiful threading. I tried as much as possible to be careful that it did not have negative effects on my edges. Read the post to find out how. The pictures on the right was taken two weeks after, with the same style which I left on (You will get to know the story of how I ended up with this style later).

Right view

Front view. See the big difference in the front?

Left view. The difference is clearest here.
You can see the edges threatening to grow up to my eyes after just 2 weeks. Lol

Can you see the difference in the edges? Even though the edges were initially already very full, my edges still found a way to grown even more.

I am starting a new hair project, which I will assess at the end of three years. This project includes me being have very gracious to my edges as it has been gracious to me.

So these are some quick tips on how to maintain and regrow your edges if they are already receding.

1. Don't use extensions and weaves every waking moment you have. Let your hair breathe. Give your hair a break!
2. If you use extensions, don't pick the hair on your edges tiny, neither should it be tight. If the hair stylist doesn't listen to you, stand up and walk away. If you don't, then your hair will walk away from your edges. Which would you prefer?
3. If you have lost a lot of hair on your edges, try not to use extension at all for the next 6 months, then mix castor oil and coconut oil, and regularly massage the area you are trying to regrow. We sell both oils
4. In addition to number 3, you can get the African Naturalistas Lavie life butter cream, which we manufacture especially for this problem. Many people have testified to its wonders, trust me.
5. Ease on caps, hats, elastic headgears and turbans that rub harshly around your edges. If you must use this regularly, consider putting on a plastic cap first, before putting it on.

I believe with these few tips, you will recover your edges, and have farmland edges like mine, lol. One more thing, before you wish for edges like mine, understand that my edges can never sleep nor be controlled with any gel or edge control cream in this world cos they are too full and frizzy (take a look at the side view of the third pic). It means you won't be able to really achieve some hairstyles, such as the third one in this post.

So are you still sure you want farmland edges like mine? To me, what matters most it that your edges are healthy and well taken care of.

P.S: I will be appearing on Moments with Mo on Ebony Life TV, DSTV channel 165 on Wednesday, 24/07/2013, by 8.30pm as I discuss Natural Hair in Nigeria with Mo Abudu, Dolapo Oni & Bolanle. Please, tune in and watch. Thanks

  2. I go through this site time and time again wondering how to get started 'repairing' my hair.

Been off 'chemicals' for like 7months running and have no other way to stay off than to use extensions. Result = teary sessions when combing hair on taking out weaves + large chunks coming off + mama mi l'éko edges.

    This style suits you, really.

    1. Lool. Thanks. When on extensions, do you moisturise properly? Cos I am wondering why taking out your extensions is so painful for you, with your hair falling off.

    3. You need to properly moisturise your hair while in extensions o. If not, it will dry out.

Thanks for the compliment. So sad that you did not see my fine footwear.

    1. You can braid your hair, so far it is not too tight, or picked too tiny. Healthy hair care fosters length retention.

  10. I been natural for over two years and I've bleached my hair twice during that time. I've tried oils, dr. Miracle, rosemary but still no improvement my edges have been gon we since maybe I was 10 year as old and now I'm 22 but it has grown alot since then but it just won't fill in. I do wear sew ins but not that often I normal wear my real hair so it gets plenty of air. I just don't know what else to do?

    1. Aww, sorry about your issues. I think you should just let the hair rest for a long time. Ease on the bleaching and anything that can encourage hair damage. Stay away from tight ponytails and too much manipulation of extensions around the edges. Add the tips in this post, and you should see improvement in about a couple of months, if its not medical related.

  14. I haven't figured out how to not wear any extensions for the next 6 months any advice on how to style my badly damaged hair whilewithout using extensions????

    ReplyDelete

    1. Really, you just need to stop the extensions one way or the other. You can invest in accessories that would cover your hair nicely. I would have said you should use wigs, but since you say it is badly damaged, even the wigs' elastics might do you bad.

  20. I have really short edges. My edges are about a inch thich in width .. from my hairline to the center of my head. I Stopped wearing weaves and heat styling for a few months to go natural ( curly ) and had a hard time because the short edges make natural look unprofessional. So i cut my hair into a bob to do a "big chop" and had to add some extensions again because i realized the wholefront of my hair is only about 2 inches long my hair would be so muxh fuller if the edges were normal. HELLLLLLLLLP !! PLease !!!

  26. Is there a way to grow back your edges without the use of oils? I've tried a couple and nothing seems to work. Currently I just deep condition and put a healing oil treatment in my hair after washing and then I braid my hair in two. One side is getting a little better but the other side seems to be getting worse. I'm at my wits end and don't know what else to do :(

  29. Can I get my thin edges to thick edges back by applying Jamaican castor oil daily

    1. Hair density is genetic. But you can definitely grow them back with Jamaican castor oil or any castor oil. I would suggest add peppermint oil to you castor oil too.

  33. I used jamaican black castor oil and coconut oil in my hair and it burned me....did not realize how bad until I had been trying it for some time (month or two). Ive used neutrogena t gel shampoo last night and its definitely helping the yellow skin/flakes are pretty much gone and my scalp feels normal again. Only thing is my edges grow back like overnight but they keep falling off no matter what i do. Also at the crowns some too and top of my hair in front is not as long as back. Its like a chemical burn so whatever i put on my scalp at front/edges is almost too much and it burns me. I feel best with nothing in my hair at all. Is their anything i can do to moisturize my edges? Should i just leave my hair alone for a while? I just want to know what i can do to keep my edges and crown in when they grow. They grow in everyday then it burns/yellow flakes and then fall off. I know my hair wants to grow out. Im afraid to trim it too.

  34. For about 2 months i used jbco and then organic coconut oil from walgreens and it burned my hair/scalp but i was not noticing the damage because i was stressed. After noticing it (yellow flaky front/edges and scalp feeling like cake mix) i bought neutrogena t gel shampoo and after 1 use last night i feel a lot better. However i cannot keep my edges / crown area from shedding. Did some scratching and it scabbed but im letting it heal on its own (front lining on right). My edges grow in almost overnight but as soon as i sweat or attempt to apply anything to moisturize the area it falls off and i get the yellow/white flake look. So long as my lining and scalp stay dry i get new growth all over including the crown and front lining just a little slower than my edges. Sweat ensues a little burning sensation and hair fall on edges and crown. What can i do to moisturize / heal this area so the hair stays after the chemical burn i endured. I havent moisturized my hair at all since using the shampoo last night. I see very minimal flaking up front and think its going to work for me. Will get biotin supplement today when i go back out. Should i wrap my hair in satin scarf at night or leave it uncovered as much as possible?
