How to properly end African Threading without Damage

The oldest form of stretching natural hair is known as African Threading. African Threading is a way of stretching your natural hair without heat. Although this method is effective, when it comes to finishing the threading, a knot is usually created at the end of the hair. If not done properly, you can end up damaging your hair when it is time to remove the thread.
In this video, I show you two ways of ending the threading so as to avoid this issue.

How to do 3 Strand Twist Out on Natural Hair

The traditional way of creating 3 strand twists can be a bit cumbersome and confusing. It involves having great finger coordination, which I feel that I lack sometimes. It involves remembering which strand to pick up next. However, this method I use will make you a 3 strand twisting genius in no time at all.

STEP 1
STEP 2
Two strand twist the other 2 parts together. I prefer doing rope twists, click here to learn how to do it,
STEP 3
Connect the third part to the rope twist and then twist.
STEP 4
I added perm rods to the ends to make it curly.
FINAL LOOK
Once the hair has dried, unravel to reveal the twistout results

HIGH BUN - Natural Hair Style Tutorial

I like BIG BUNS and I cannot lie! Actually, that's not really true. I prefer the smaller, simple, classic buns, but for today's tutorial I decided to try the large, high buns that make you look like you're carrying a house on your head :p

We saw a video yesterday from Chizi Duru, and I'm about to share yet another video from her. Let me tell you why I like her videos. First of all, her hair texture looks like mine. It's very important that when you watch Youtube videos for hair tutorials, you're following people with similar hair texture to yours. Secondly, I like that her styles are not complicated at all. Don't you get a little sad and irritated when you watch videos with techniques that just fly by you? Thirdly, I like that her videos are short and straight to the point. Ain't nobody got time for loooooooooooooooooooooooong videos.

One of the amazing ways to style your natural hair is to wear a hat, beanie, fedora or any kind of head gear. Especially when you can seem to come up with something and you're running really late or it's simply a bad hair day. You just throw on a hat and tuck your hair in and voila! you're ready to go.
Granted, you can't wear a hat to just anywhere but that doesn't undermine it's functionality and style. Plus, hats serve as a great protection from the elements expecially if you're going to be outdoor for a long time.

Hello everyone,
I'm a huge fan of updos but unfortunately, my scalp isn't. My scalp can't stand bobby pins which are necessary to hold the updos in place. So, I stay completely away from them except it's absolutely necessary like during a photoshoot.
But today, I'm sharing a updo tutorial with you especially for those of you that don't have time to style your natural. It's fast, quick and easy and works great with 4C natural hair. Plus, it can last up to a week if it is properly maintained.

Natural Hair Bun - Different Ways!

I'm all about the LOW natural hair bun these days. I had been thinking about putting my hair in that style for a while, and after I saw Michelle Obama's low bun at the recent Presidential Inauguration, I knew that I was definitely doing mine. I've posted a video and tutorial here on how I achieve a natural hair bun, so you can check it out if you want to do the same.

How To Stop Extensions From Itching

People complain a lot about their scalp itching after braids has been installed using extentions. I will show you how to prep your extensions/attachment for protective styles like Senegalese twists, Havana twists, crotchet braids, braids. I will also demonstrate how to install Havana twists without breakage.
HOW TO PREP THE EXTENSION HAIR:
In a bucket of warm water, add 1 cup of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar. Soak marley hair for an hour
Rinse with water till water runs clear.

The Limited Styling Options Of A Fine-textured Natural Hair + my love - hate relationship with bobby pins

It didn't really hit me until a few weeks ago during Kemi Lewis' photoshoot for her lookbook. She already planned a few styles for me. Most importantly, her signature style. It did not occur to her that I had a different texture until she took down my puff. Eventually, she had to swap my styles for the other model with 4c while she made do with my 4a like a professional. ( The results were awesome btw!). I didn't even know how I felt that day. All of the excitement did not allow me to process all of it until I got home. But before then, I casually mentioned my predicament and Kemi kept nodding in affirmation, confirming my fears. Then she told me not to think too much about it that there was nothing I could do about it. Plus, my hair was healthy and in perfect condition. Of course, I agreed and got over it quick.
You know how they say there's a blessing in every disappointment? Yeah well, I believe it. Just when I was thinking about my limited styling options, I just remembered my love - hate relationship with bobby pins and I thought, 'wow, a blessing in disguise'. Yes ladies, the same ole bobby pins. One of the holy grail tools of natural hair. Yes, it gives me migraines. No, there's no way around it even when it is loosely placed. The other time I went to the salon, I had more than 20 bobby pins placed in my hair. Before the end of the week, I took them all down. I kind of expected them to suggest alternatives styles but that's just by the way.

It's been incredibly challenging styling my natural hair without bobby pins. Initially, I started wearing solely puffs but then my hair grew longer I needed to experiment and find a way around it. So far, I've gotten a hang out it. Instead, I try to use other accessories. I just recently discovered the goodness of side combs and it has helped so much. I just tuck my hair in and hold it down with a comb(s) and I'm good to go. I also use stretchy hair combs to keep my updos in place.

The dying art of Didi on Natural Hair

Recently, I stopped making my hair. June was the last time I got my hair professionally done, all of which were done at O'Naturals, and featured in this blog.
For one or two reasons, I decided I wasn't going to make my hair this year again, and I would wait till my wedding period when I have to do the bridal styles before I allow anyone touch my hair again. So since then, I have been putting my hair in about 10-16 twists. or just packing in an updo.
Throughout last week, I was having this insatiable craving to do Didi. I couldn't do it upper Friday, so I forgot about it. My wash day was this past Saturday, and I was supposed to put my hair in big twists before going for NITC, but the desire to do Didi jumped on me again, lol.
So in the morning, about 11.00am, I asked my sister for where I can do Didi, i.e. the local onidiris. She directed me accordingly, and I went on my sojourn to get didi done.
First stylist: She had three young school children in her shop, all waiting to get didi done. She directed me elsewhere since I couldn't wait.
Second stylist: She had three young school children in her shop, all waiting to get didi done. She directed me elsewhere since I couldn't wait.
Third stylist: She had three young school children in her shop, all waiting to get didi done. She had a very nasty attitude, for which some people scolded her.
One thing was sure, the number of local hair makers, especially the ones who do didi is fast dwindling. The remaining have now become such local champions, and I'm worried that this would make our didi culture eventually extinct.
At this point, I didn't know what to do again. I just kept walking, and I determined I didn't want to weave/flat-braid my hair. It's either didi or nothing for me. I kept walking, and later asked one girl selling in a roadside shop. She directed me to a local salon.
On getting there, I saw all the hair stylists sitting and watching TV idly. They didn't have a single customer, which was strange for a Saturday morning. And all the onidiris were swamped. Anyway, I told them I wanted to do didi. They said 500 naira. I started exclaiming. 500 naira??? With my own hair??? I even told them I wanted to do it in just 6 or 7 parts, but they said that's the price, even for weaving.
So I said they should do it. When I opened my hair up, and loosed the 4 twists, the girl first swallowed spit, lol. I'm sure if she had her way, she'd have sent me back. I know how difficult it can be to pack full hair into didi, so I understood what must have been going through her mind.
One of the hair stylists just kept staring in wide-eye amazement. About 10 minutes later, her colleagues had to ask her why she's staring so hard, that hasn't she seen this long before? She said she hadn't. They then told her, there are few peopl with even longer ones.
I really felt for the stylist at some point. She kept stopping to exercise her hands after she couldn't take the pain again. It's not that my hair is kinky or stubborn, but if you understand the art of didi, and how it's completely different from weaving, you would know what how difficult it can be to pack length and fullness into an inverted braid.
Anyway, I got my didi done, paid, and was happy. I liked it. Up till now, no one has paid me a complinmet, lol... Not even Ebun at NITC, who only questioned me, asking if I did the didi because I want to wear wig *side eye*
I haven't had the opportunity to take a picture of my didi, but it looks something like what I did 5 years ago, in this picture

Natural Hair Style - LOOSE TWISTS

About a month or two ago, while perusing Instagram, I came across this hairstyle - Loose Twists and I fell in love!!! I liked that it seemed to be a quicker and easier alternative to regular twists. Additionally whenever I twist my natural hair, I don't typically get a lot of volume, but with loose twists, the style makes my hair look fuller. I watched several tutorials online, which I will post below and I got to twisting! It took a couple of hours, but I've been enjoying the hairstyle.
My only worry is that my hair might get matted up and start to loc - it usually does that when I leave my natural hair in a protective twist style.
For maintenance, I just use my spray bottle or put leave-in conditioner directly on my hair. I also like that it's very easy to oil my scalp when needed. At night, I just put it in a bun or pineapple and tie my hair down with a scarf.
This week I've actually had the hair in a modified version of the style Beenzu posted last week. It definitely has kept my hand-in-hair syndrome away.
