This Bride did not only rock her natural hair, she had her six Bridesmaids rock theirs too.

In this week's edition of awesome natural hair news, 27-year-old Nakiya Whitty tied the knot recently in a small intimate beach wedding.

Now, you might be wondering what's so special about that? We didn't think so too until she started posting photos of her wedding which showed Nakiya and her six bridesmaids wearing their gorgeous natural hair freely.

Of course, it was a sight to behold and it went viral quickly.

When BuzzFeed reached out to her, she expressed her shock and excitement.

According to her,

I had no idea that my wedding day pictures would make such a splash on the social media outlets. I have had people share with me how they are or were afraid to wear their natural hair out and I’ve given them some sort of boost to want to wear their God given tresses and I would just like to say that I honestly was just getting married with who and what I love and appreciate in mind for MY photo album. MY memories. MY big day. In no way was I ever thinking I would be seen by or touch so many, but in light of believing that God makes no mistakes. I want to let everyone know how blessed I feel to be a blessing to so many.

Throwback to that time this father and daughter broke the internet with their natural hair.

Hello, everyone!

It's not every time you see a father and daughter team up especially when it comes to their hair. Most fathers usually prefer the clean look leaving all of the hair talk to their wives and daughters.

So, when the internet discovered Benny Harlem and his 6-year-old daughter Jaxyn, they couldn't get over them. They went viral instantly! Benny is a singer/songwriter and has been showing off his incredible long free-flowing natural hair which he has been growing in tandem with his daughter's. One might even wonder if he had her intentionally for this very reason.

The most striking thing about their hair is the length and density. It's not even normal, to be honest. Then they get together to pose for enchanting photos giving off ethereal and regal vibes which leave our jaws literally dropping. Like how the hell is that even possible?

This salon is changing the conversation around Natural Hair in the workplace with the #NaturalisProfessional campaign

Hello everyone!

We all know how a lot of our workplaces are still trying to come to terms with accepting natural hair as the status quo. Well, this natural hair salon in the Bahamas is changing the conversation with a campaign they have declared #NaturalisProfessional.

According to Carol-Lynn Taylor, the owner of Happy Hair Boutique, “the goal is to illustrate to our public that natural hair is accepted in the workplace and more notably in the professional environment.”  We couldn't agree more.

The whole idea of the campaign is to encourage women who wear their hair natural but do not feel comfortable or supported in the work place by showing examples of women who do. Taylor further added that, “It is an important part of educating and changing the mindset to where natural hair is not viewed as inferior to any other hair type. Most of all it is important to demonstrate that how one wears their hair does not influence ability or competence, as professionals in all fields rock their natural and rock their careers.”

Can I just say that I absolutely love the idea behind this campaign. I wish it was something we could do here. A collaboration here and there. A lot of employers need the paradigm shift. We've done enough talking. Now, we need to show them. Maybe, just maybe things would change.

Although, the campaign originated from the Bahamas, Taylor is inviting everyone around the world to take part with the hashtag #NaturalisProfessional on Instagram and Facebook.

Here's What 3 Nigerian Celebrities Think About Their Natural Hair

Hello everyone!


During my blog rounds last week, I stumbled on an insightful Punch article on Nigerian women's new love affair for natural hair. Of course, the headline alone was a perfect click-bait that piqued my curiosity. Given the bashing and backlash the natural hair community is fond of receiving, it was interesting to hear from a refreshing point of view.

The writer took time out to get the views and opinions of different women from different works of life. From the working class ladies to the celebrities, a cosmetologist to the business woman who stock hair extensions and relaxers. The men weren't left out either.

The most interesting aspects were that of the celebrities and the men, of course. It was great to see that natural hair is more than a fad but a conscious lifestyle decision they have taken. Apparently, quite a number of them have dumped their extensions for their natural hair which is why I decided to take time out to showcase them in my ongoing celebrity specials. You can catch up on previous posts here.

SO, here's why Monalisa Chinda isn't going back to relaxers:

“I don’t go to the salon, I do home service. Because I make my hair once a month, it takes about five hours. Now that I only wear my natural hair, it has been reduced to two hours. It is because my hair started wearing out because of too much relaxer, I needed to let my hair breathe. Honestly, ever since I started wearing my natural hair, I have decided not to go back to perming.” 

Omoni Oboli, on her identity and natural hair:

 “It brings out my natural beauty better. I have been carrying my natural hair for two years now. I don’t think relaxer is for me again. I will likely not relax my hair again. I like my hair the way it is now; I don’t see myself changing it anytime soon. Maintaining it is not an easy process though. It likes a lot of moisture. I use different kinds of oil like coconut oil and castor oil. I also use live-in conditioner. I take care of my hair myself, I don’t have to go to the salon. I will never get tired of taking care of my hair.”

Upcoming actress, Omo Iyasara, on her love for the natural hair trend:

“I love my natural hair. I have started grooming my natural hair. At the moment, I am technically at ‘war’ with salons. I wear wigs for now while I still groom the hair.”

It's interesting to see the various reasons they choose to wear their natural hair. Which goes to say that, everyone is free to make personal decisions. If you're feeling particularly trendy, then go for it! Hopefully, overtime we get to the point where we realize that for most of us, it is a lifestyle.

Grey Crochet Braids on Natural Hair

I've mentioned a few times that I was starting to get bored with my hair. The options I had were to color my hair, cut it, and maybe loc it. Well, I'm afraid of dyeing my hair, so for color, the next best things were to get a colored wig or braids, specifically crochet braids. I've been itching to get grey crochet twists for a few months now, and I decided to bite the bullet this week.

My whole family has been shaking their head, and my 4 year old nephew kept asking me why my hair was grey. But I like it [for now] and I wanted to show you guys :)

I used Color 44 Kinky Twist Hair from Femi Collection. Ideally, I would have preferred ombre grey hair, going from black to grey but that option was not available.

My cousin did the cornrows/weaving the day before - she reminds me of salon owners because she tried to use a small comb through my dry hair, and complained when I protested! Then my sister and I crocheted the hair on.

All I know is that I'm the X-Men's Storm's Nigerian cousin.

Kenyan Blogger Claims Natural Hair Is Ugly

Yup! You heard right!

Hello everyone!

Recently, Kenyan blogger Nancy Roxanne wrote an article on uReport titled  “Ladies, natural hair is ugly! There, I said it.” . According to her, natural hair is not for everyone and it is a "pain to manage".

This is coming from someone who watched her friend transition to natural hair and then back to relaxed hair under a month.

Read what she had to say;

It is said that a woman’s beauty is in her hair. Women go to great lengths to achieve gorgeous hair. Some perm and relax their hair. Some spruce up their hair with extensions. Others sport weaves or wigs. And then we have the pompous of them all; the ‘naturalistas’. They believe that nappy is happy. I beg to differ. In my opinion, the eye-appeal of hair is in the length and volume. But that is just me.

The natural hair community in Kenya is something of a cult, what with all these natural hair gurus over-sharing routines, regimens and hair recipes on social media. I never cared much about ‘team natural’ until I watched a friend transition from relaxed hair to natural hair then back to relaxed hair in under a month. Someone needs to blow a hole in this natural hair Shangri-La that some people have got going on.

First of all, natural hair is not flattering to everyone. I even dare say it is ugly. Only a handful of women actually look good with kinky hair. Still, masses of unenlightened women wake up one day and decide to rock natural hairstyles only to end up adding to the ghastly parade of natural hair disasters being flaunted around.
Secondly, contrary to what the naturalistas may want you to believe, natural hair is a pain to manage. Getting natural hair to look presentable enough to leave the house is a nightmarish chore. Washing, detangling and styling involves a gruelling regimen where you spend hours with hands over your head.

If cramping arms is not enough to deter you from going natural, maybe the financial requirements needed to maintain natural hair will. You will need an arsenal of hair products to keep your natural hair looking good. Be prepared to spend quite a bit of money on gels, oils and hair conditioners, among other products.

Many people jump into the bandwagon of natural hair without carefully considering how their new natural hair regimen will affect their lifestyles. The financial and time investment is not a luxury everyone can afford. My friend could cope with the financial aspect but realised her busy schedule could not accommodate hours of detangling and deep conditioning. She wanted something neat and simple, like running a comb through her hair twice before rushing to work.

The bottom line is, natural hair is not for everyone. Erykah Badu always has a team of hair stylists at her beck and call. That is why her natural hair is always on point. You clearly don’t, so leave natural hair to those who can manage and actually look good with natural hair.

5 Times Maria Borges Slayed In Her TWA

Hello everyone! 

Angolan model, Maria Borges made history by becoming the first model to rock her TWA at the just concluded 2015 Victoria 's Secret Show. Now, if you're fashion inclined, you'd know that this is a huge deal.

Of course, this brought her into the limelight and there was a lot of buzz surrounding that singular act. Although, she had made an appearance on the runway twice before now, this was the first time she let her hair out.

When asked about her decision in an interview, this is what she had to say,

‘I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria Secret show with my natural hair. I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy'

We couldn't be more proud.

Of course, I went scouting for pictures of her and her TWA.

Natural Hair Emojis Are Finally Here!

Hello everyone!

During the course of the month, Dove Hair introduced Love Your Curls Emojis, the first emoji keyboard designed to represent kinky hair.

It's basically a line of curly-haired emojis for ladies who are black, brown, white, and in between.

The emoji's, which were developed in partnership with Snaps, can be used in text and messenger systems, including iMessage, SMS/text, Facebook messenger and WhatsApp. The keyboard contains 27 curly hair designs, with selectable skintones and hair colors—resulting in a total of 131 curly emoji variations, and even animated GIFs.

To celebrate the launch of the emoji’s, Dove Hair has also partnered with Twitter so that each time users share a #LoveYourCurls moment, a custom Dove Curly Emoji will auto-generate within the tweet.

According to them,

“While Emojis are diversifying (as evidenced by the last update ), there is still a “one size fits all” for hair – straight and sleek, the traditional beauty ideal,” Dove noted in a press release.

“Knowing it takes extensive time to petition Unicode to update its keyboard, Dove Hair will offer an immediate solution for all of the curly women and girls who currently have no accurate representation of their hair when ‘speaking’ in the increasingly common social language of Emojis.

“The Dove Love Your Curls Emojis will be available for FREE download in the App Store and Google Play on November 4, 2015.”
