Finghair Tips Thursday: Washing

Tapered Natural Hair Cut

Hi ladies!

I noticed this trend that has been around for a while now- tapered natural hair. Wherein both sides of the head are shaved to create a style.Of course, growth wouldn't be at the same rate. Then again, that's the idea of the style. Personally, it's not something I would rock. I don't think I can forfeit my growth or anything else for that matter for it but it seems to be gaining a lot of grounds so.

Anyways, see for yourself.

So, what do y'all think?

Something you can rock?

 Yay or Nay?

More brides are wearing their natural hair on their wedding day!

Source
We ran a poll about brides wearing natural hair on their wedding day, on this blog, and it lasted for exactly a year.

The poll expired in may. We asked our blog visitors “Would you do a Natural Bridal Hair style on your wedding day?”

Let me quickly insert here that 70% of our traffic comes from search engines, so I therefore believe that most of the visitors are naturals, transitioning, curious about natural hair, or very interested in healthy hair care.

The option with the most votes was a surprise to me. In fact, these were the ones with the most votes, from highest to lowest. What surprised me most was how the first and second in line were very close to each other in number of votes. I thought the third option would carry the highest vote, since its a natural hair blog, which it did, but the last option would really have low votes. I am really shocked that the first option had low votes.

And here goes my inference...

Diary of an Honest Naturalista: Week 60

I went for a training session in church last Saturday, as we were going to meet a very popular life coach whom we would ordinarily be asked to pay tens of thousands of naira to listen to. I could not imagine I would get to hear this guy, without having to pay a dime.

So with my hair hanging down in twist outs, as I stepped out to ease myself, after one of the sessions was over, I saw this guy just sitting in one corner.  He looked very calm, and not as high and mighty as he looks on TV and billboards. I oohd and aahd over him, and raved about how he’s my role model, the best thing that ever happened since slice bread, etc. I collected his business card, having faith that our paths would cross in future.

I finally went back into the training room, and he was introduced. We all gave him a standing ovation. As expected, he did an excellent job in motivating us to be leaders and whatever we desired to be, as we listened in awe and agreement. By the time he was done, we wished there could be something more than a standing ovation we could give him. I was far more impressed than I thought I would be. Some people are just gifted.

We all gathered to take a group picture with this phenomenal speaker, and afterwards, many of us were scampering to take personal pictures with him. Who doesn’t want to famz with a celebrity, in this social media age?

Finally, it was my turn. I took what I felt was my coveted pictures with this motivational speaker, and even quickly chatted with Dimeji, to brag about my luck.

The man eventually left, as we settled back for the next session. I finally decided to check my snapshots, so I could send to Dimeji and some other people. I then saw that…

Our celebrity speaker had his eyes and nose in awkward positions.

yuck

I began to wonder maybe it was my presence by his side that irritated him. I looked closely at the picture, and realized we stood directly in front of an industrial fan on full blast. My twist outs were out of place, waving, and the last thing I saw shocked me. The picture caught him gently flipping my violent and intrusive hair strands off his neck, thus the reason for his facial expression.

Why oh why did I wear those ridiculously high heels, and stand extremely close to that man? I imagine seeing him next time, and he suddenly arms himself with a pair of scissors to snip off any of my hair strands that threatens to attack him.

There goes my chance of making friends with the most famous speaker in town at the moment, thanks to my hair.

How to easily find what works for your natural hair

I know many people perceive me as this natural hair guru, considering the number of mails and calls I receive on a daily basis, but the truth is that I am not without my own unique hair struggles. I have made careless mistakes, suffered hair damages, and what not.

Middle of last year, after my hair reached mid-back length, I was so excited to see my hair grow that long. I was quite pleased and surprised, considering the fact that I hardly do length checks. Even when my hair was relaxed, it had never been that long.

My regular style for a long time before then was to have my hair twisted for two weeks, after wish I proceed to do my usual thing on wash day, and then put my hair in twists immediately after. After a while, this was getting stressful, as my hair was taking longer hours to twist. I was now using close to for hours to do medium-sized twists on my hair, the only advantage being the fact that I could watch movies while making my hair.

Because of this, I decided to increase the number of weeks I keep my twists in from two to three. I felt is I do this, I would lose less hair, because the manipulation would be less frequent, thus allowing for faster growth. I was just looking for anything in the world that would make me retain more length.

I felt the three weeks twist thing was cool, but could be better, so I decided to start making updos, which could last for three weeks. I tried this twice (making a total of 6 weeks), and then stopped. I realized this wasn’t good for me because when updos stay to long, you can’t reach every part of your hair to properly moisturise, since its hidden in an updo. This led to my hair being extremely dry after 3 weeks, and really thirsty. The worst part was the overwhelming amount of single strand knots I saw in my hair, I hardly see knots when my in twists, so I returned to the three weeks twist.

Earlier this year, I still felt I wasn’t doing well. My hair had almost reached waist length by then, but it is no news that I easily suffer hair damage. Men, if I could count how many times I have damaged my hair, mostly due to carelessness…

Anyway, after the aloe vera incident, I was pissed, and decided to change my styling regimen to the two weeks period corn-rows I had been contemplating about. I only had to do this for about 5 weeks to realize that this is the worst mistake of all.

My hair had become noticeably shorter that I did not even bother doing a length check, to know that my hair was in serious trouble. The hair loss I was seeing was telling me all I needed to know.

It was at this period that I brought out my hair loss records to do comparisons, taking products and techniques into consideration, and I almost beat myself in the head from the discovery I made.

The hair loss I had when I was twisting my hair for three weeks was definitely more than twice what I had when I was twisting for two weeks. This meant that my hair was one of those kind of hair that did not favour having styles in for too long. Also, the style that was the worst for me was the two weeks cornrow.

Sample hair loss chart: Click image for a clearer view
On the paper stuck behind the ziploc bags, are written the date of record, products used, treatments done, and any other important info one needs to pen down.

Please, note that I used multiple hair records to arrive at this conclusion, i.e. I used hair loss records for over a year, amounting to over 30 samples, so I didn’t just pick two records and compare. Also know that you can never really tell what styles make you lose hair more if you do not actually have physical evidences to compare. This is because sometimes, our mind can play tricks on us, making us believe we are losing lots of hair, when it is just really the normal thing, and vice versa, which was what drove me into changing my styling regimen in the first place. I should have done the much-needed comparison a long time ago. The only comparison I had been doing was bi-monthly comparison, not comparing like 6 month ago records to current record.

As for you, three weeks of twist might be the best for your own hair length retention. You would never know if you don't experiment, but don't wait for an extremely long time before you start comparing.

I have now gone back to the 2 weeks twist, which I should have never left in the first place, and have to repair this damage. I have since cut part of my hair. I want to see how it will blossom with the cut. I was trying to fix what wasn’t broken, and I am paying dearly for it.

So please, you can choose to answer any of these questions. Have you ever experienced hair damage, and how did you solve it? What could I have done differently to avoid my damage? Do you think paranoia was one of the determinant factors in pushing me to fix what wasn't broken in the first place?

Real life natural hair talks: Your man and his natural hair

Hi Naturalistas
Since we are having the men grace our naturallure spotlight this period, I wanted to also dedicate this segment for the men.  I had a discussion the other day with a friend and she said she likes to admire guys with hair but she is not sure she would marry a man with big hair and all.
It had me thinking a lot. Would I really marry a guy with all that hair?
I mean they are cute to look at, but what are the real implications?
Okay let me give y'all a second to think :)

I think at some point I came to the conclusion that I could date a guy with big hair but not sure I want to deal with my husband fussing about bad hair days with me, lol.

You know, then you would be living together so you can see how he puts in the work to take care of it so it doesn't look unkempt and that can be quite something.

Also, I think it also has a lot to do with the image. I think a guy with big hair doesn't really come off like a guy that takes life seriously and perhaps at a certain age, you may not be expecting that. Think about the fact that instead of thinking of other things, he's thinking about how to wash and dry his hair.

Okay, I'm thinking too much. It's just hair, right?
Gotcha! Now y'all can see that it really isn't just hair hahaha
What's your take on this?

How to Prevent and Remove Lint in Natural Hair

When it comes to washing my girls' hair. I always dread the lint that I find. I have struggled for years on how to stop this lint from appearance. I was not successful !! However, I now have a method I use in removing the lint.

Before I show you, here are some ways to prevent or reduce the occurrences of lint in your child's natural hair.
  • Cover hair with satin or silk bonnet or scarf at night
  • Look for ways to prevent the child from constantly rubbing head on carpet (This is a struggle for us!!)
  • Put the hair in a protective style that minimizes the concentration of the lint to one area

In this video, the lint is only gathered at the base of the hair. Watch to see how we easily remove the lint.

Natural Hair photoshoot

So I finally did a long-ovedue photoshoot in februaru. I should have done this ages ago, but because of laziness, I didn't. It wasn't until I could no longer push it forward, thanks to a website I had to build, which needed some of these pictures, then I had to do it.

It was a great session, but really rushed. One thing is sure. I won't be using this photographer next time.

Damn shrinkage. My waist-length hair must be on display for you all to drool over, by fire by force, lol. Next time, I will go with a hairstylist that would later either stretch my hair out with thread or heat (I am already shuddering at the thought of applying heat to my hair).

I have loads and loads of them, but enjoy these few. Anyway, enjoy them. Lemme know the ones you like best

Don't I have a great figure?
Can you feel my humility? Lol

The knife scar on my right cheek is
obvious here. Makes me look like a
village girl, lol.

I actually envy these edges.

Lemme know the ones you like best. Which is your fave?
