Kinky Braids Extension for Natural Hair Update

Okay people, sorry for the delay. I have had to sort some personal stuffs out. Plus this subsidy issue hasn’t been really going down well with us in Nigeria.

Do you know that after I wrote about the whipped shea butter in my previous post, one of my blog readers ordered for two? Of course, you don’t know. So I am telling you. So yeah, its official now. I am selling it based on order. Just in case you want to place your order, you can either click the African Naturalistas whipped shea butter gadget on the top right of this blog, or click the order yourwhipped hair butter tab on the tabs space. So that’s that for that.

As I said in the previous post, I have had kinky braids on, I made it towards the end of December cos of the harmattan that was coming ahead, which has descended on us strongly. This is the first time I am braiding my hair since I started letting my natural hair out. I have been weary about braiding my hair because of my edges.  My edges are the delicate part of my hair and they are curly.

My goals for the braids were to let my hair rest and grow it more, since I won’t be combing it as often.

Before Braiding
I did the prepoo, washed, conditioned, sectioned and stretched my hair. I made sure they did not ‘arrange’ my front hair, like they would always try to. I made sure they did not braid too tight. I was fighting with the hair dresser all through. I don’t like salons because most hairdressers are not educated about natural hair, as naturalistas must have discovered. I finally made it out of there in one piece. I hope to be the one to do my Kinky Braids next time.

Daily Regimen
So my hair regimen is to spray a mix of water, olive oil, castor oil and glycerin every morning and night. I then rob the edges of my hair with a mixture of castor oil and olive oil to strengthen the new strands that are growing. I seal with Africa Naturalista whipped shea butter every morning.

Washing
Every 2 weeks, I do my DC with my prepoo mix. You can find out about my prepoo mix in this post. Then I wash normally with and condition. After which, I do an ACV rinse and a tea rinse.

I must tell you that when I did this, my hair felt really neat as my scalp felt refreshed. I realized that it is easier for my scalp to be neater when I wash it while braided that when I wash it ordinarily. This is because our scalps are more exposed while braided.

I also noticed that the edges of my hair have really grown out in front. It even made the kinky braids look rough, but I like this development. The avoidance of regular combing has caused this. I plan to keep up with my regimen and see how the hair will be when I take out the extensions.

I wish you a great week ahead.

  1. With my current weave-on, I've not really been taking care of my hair. I think it's OK to shampoo it, right?

    1. Yeah, I know some people use shampoo when they have human hair fixed on their hair.

Please, take care of your hair oo, especially when you have weaves or extensions on it. This will prevent excess drying.

    1. Yeah, I read that on a post/comment of yours. If my braids affects my edges, you can be sure I won't braid also cos my edges are important to me.

  3. I love Kinky twists. The add-ons provide bulk and come closest to matching our natural hair. The other add-ons are so straight and slick, they tend to just slide off my hair or look mis-matched.

I found someone that can braid my hair - although I have to still manage her, she really isn't bad. I am thankful for that because I am not sure I want to make my own twists myself just yet.

    1. Lool, I know you love it. I agree that it is very similar to our own hair.

Remember one of my hair goals at the meet up was to know how to make my hair. I must say that I haven't been really doing well with that.

      Thanks

    1. Loooool. Weak edges? Sorry, I thing you should avoiding braiding the weak parts, like you have done.
Consider strengthening your edges with oils like castor oil

  5. Braiding affects my edges, but really large ones don't. I really love ur twist but to find someone to do it for me here perfectly would cost me about $150 *sigh*
And would you do international delivery for ur whipped butter, it looks really good.

    1. Eeeya, I heard braiding is really expensive at your side. So what do you do to your hair most times?

As for the international delivery, I have not considered that. If you are really serious, you can inbox me so I can send someone that is coming over

    2. I really don't mind getting the whipped butter as long as everything including the delivery would be affordable for a student like me.

  7. I have just started seeing fashionable peeps on natural hair ooo! Splendid. Buh I don't av d liver yet! All these hair routines sound expensive ooo(covers face) and I know I'll av a lot of work to do cos my hair is as coarse as dy come! It gets as hard as a rock when left virgin. My scalp is tender and the hair coarse(strong is the word) so braiding sef na wahala na soso fixn or just ponytail. Nice blog(I know,I can talk shay!)

  8. Love the hairstyle. Maybe I'll try Kinky braids again...when I get out of the "don't feel like doing anything to my hair" phase.
