Before you braid or twist your natural hair

Hallo!

How's your week been? I hope you've had a pretty one. Last weekend, I decided to finally get my hair braided. I'd been talking about it for a while, but never got around to it because of time. So last weekend, when I had a few hours to play with, I got my book ready, called a hair braider and spent a few hours getting my new black/brown locks.

Before I braided my hair though, I wanted to make sure that I did all that I could, to make sure that my natural hair was ready. You want to make sure any potential damage is minimized or even removed, so these are the steps I took:

STEP 1: DEEP CONDITION
The first thing I did was deep condition my hair. I've read somewhere that putting the deep conditioner in your hair BEFORE washing, ensures that the contents seep into your hair better than when it's wet. In addition, it also saves time, so you don't have to wash, DC, wash again. I used AN's Deep Conditioning Mayonnaise. Bonus: I did this step while getting a pedicure (remember I prefer going to salons), so it was in my hair for about an hour and a half or so.

STEP 2: WASH/CONDITION
Next, I took off the towel and shower cap, and proceeded to get my hair washed and conditioned. I used AN's Moisturizing Natural Shampoo and Moisturizing and Detangling Conditioner.

STEP 3: DETANGLE
The next thing I did was slather my hair with water, mixture of oils (including olive oil and AN's Castor Oil), glycerin, a little leave-in conditioner, and sealed with AN's Moisturizing Hair Butter (which smells AH-MAH-ZING btw). I braided my hair into about 8 sections, for easier management. Then I began to detangle my hair strands by section.  Once my hair was moisturized enough, I used a wide-tooth comb and a curl detangler brush.

STEP 4: STRETCH
Finally, I put my freshly detangled hair back into braided sections (you can twist them). This gives your hair some stretch, so you don't have to use heat. The braid stylist even commented that my hair was easy to manage because I'd detangled and pre-braided.

So there you have it! Now, I'll have to ensure that my braids are kept in good condition, and that my hair is routinely moisturized and kept clean.

Have a very lovely weekend!

  1. Nice. How long do you carry your braids? I usually face the problem of my coils sticking out of the braids after one week or so.

    1. You could use gel or bees wax to smooth it back down ...
