'I was confident about my decision to go natural' Mane matters with Esther

Hey Naturalistas,

Meet Esther

Can you tell us who you are and what you do?
My name is Esther Mandy Danjack.  Government personel by day, DIY champion by night.

What are your thoughts about natural hair?
Like all things natural,  it's nature's gift to us at it's purest form.  Natural hair is what gives us a unique identity especially in a world with a zillion standards of beauty.

When/why did you decide to go natural?
I decided to go natural in 2014. It was as a result of watching my sister transition and after doing alot of research i decided that My hair wasn't healthy and i wanted health at all cost.

Did you do a BC or you transitioned?
I transitioned for 8months . That BC is not for the faint hearted. Lol.

What was the experience like?
To be honest it was amazing.  Developing a regimen and ofcourse the novelty of doing something new was great too.

What was/is your biggest fear about going Natural?
Just one. The longevity of keeping my hair chemical free. How long could i cope and what next if that happened.

Do you have a regimen you stick to? What is it like?
Yes.  Co-wash every week.  Deep condition at least 2-3times a month.  Unless my hair is in a weave/braids. Use the LOC method when styling. I try to a hot oil treatment at least once a month. But i can be a lazy natural sometimes.  Lol

What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
None. I was pretty confident about my decision and as long as it worked for me,  I didn't really listen to naysayers.

Do you think you are in it for the long haul or is it just a phase?
Oh I definitely think so.  If I ever had to relax my hair again it would be because I'm planning to cut everything off soon.

There are people that definitely have negative comments about your hair, how do you deal with that?
Negative comments?  I don't think I've heard any.

What's your must have product and accessory?
Coconut oil!!!  And bobby pins/rubber bands.  Must haves!

What is your go-to style?
A twist out/bantu knot out that transitions into an afro puff.

What advice do you have for anyone just going natural?
It takes time, patience and a lot of work at first.  But natural hair is sooo versatile that when you get the hang of it, you'll love it.
