I want to go natural, but I don't know the right products to use

Good day,
We have decided to feature question and answer segments for some time. This is because, people are asking us questions that we believe many naturals or wannabe naturals want answers to. We also believe that our responses are going to be beneficial to a lot of readers. If you natural hair enquiries, do not hesitate to contact us. We do not claim to have solutions and answers to all hair problems, but we believe that with our experience and through research, we can help one another. Also, know that when it comes to natural hair, there is always more than one way to combat the issue.

Names will be changed to protect the identities of the people in question. In the meantime, we are still taking entries from guest bloggers. For further information, please, click here.
Hello AN
Am glad to know that there is a natural hair blog in Nigeria. I am presently growing my natural hair before I take the BC. My major concern is about having the products for maintaining natural hair in Nigeria ie our
climate. In 2010, I wore Rasta braids for 10 months and this grew my hair. After I chopped the permed part, I carried my natural hair for 3 months before I returned back to permed hair because I could not manage it; not knowing the products to use.
Now, I want to revert back to natural but need to know the right products to use to make it soft, manageable and moisturized. Tessy confirmed to me that she uses only Shea butterand water since Miss Jessie's products do not work in Nigeria. I will really appreciate a response. Good luck and thank you.

B

Hi B,

Thanks for contacting us. I am glad that our blog is of good use to you.

Actually, the problem you are facing is what a lot of Natural Hair ladies in Nigeria face, which I also faced in the past.

I would first of all let you know that when it comes to natural hair texture, everyone's hair is different. What works for you might not work for someone else, and vice versa.

My advice to you is that you don't really bother about the products you use, but the technique in which you use it. You also need to know what you want to achieve with your hair. I know that Tessy doesn't really comb her hair, as she has very tight coils, and therefore her hair has the ability to look like low cut, even when it is very long. My hair cannot achieve that.

I use mostly natural products, (including shea butter and oil), and very few processed products (mainly Gel). You should know why you are using shea butter, not just use it because everyone is. Also, applying shea butter in its raw form on your sometimes weigh some people's hair down, and causes rapid build up on the hair, which is why some people tend to buy Hair Butter, whipped with other natural oils.

All in all, you will have to study your hair, and find what works for it. But don't bother about products. With more research, you will find what works for you.

As for softening your hair, I believe that any natural hair can be softened, no matter how hard. I have therefore added these two links. They should be of great benefit to you.

    1. Yea true. We don't really have products here. If only we would stop bothering ourselves about the products we don't have and concentrate more on the care of the hair itself, things would be much more easier.

    2. I can't say it any better than how you put it. I wish folks would come to terms that products do not make the hair.
