How to Test for an Effective Moisturiser/Leave-in Conditioner on your hair

Hello, hello ladies!

A moisturiser or leave-in conditioner is one of the cornerstones of a healthy head of hair. You are headed for breakage city if you don't have one in your arsenal.

Some leave-ins in my arsenal
The product junkie in me purchased the  African Pride Shea Butter Miracle Leave-In Conditioner recently. As I was thinking of how hyped I was to test it out, I thought I would share the testing process which all my leave-ins/moisturisers undergo.

A good moisturiser must be water based, meaning water is the FIRST ingredient in the list; followed by your humectants (to draw in moisture e.g. glycerine, propylene glycol), fatty alcohols( to soften the hair and aid with moisturising it e,g, cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol etc) and additional extracts from oils, fruit and herbs. These extras besides the water do not have to be in the particular order I have set them out in.

A moisturiser may have all these bomb ingredients, but the true proof is in the pudding, how your hair likes it. Enter the ultimate moisturiser test which puts the product on trial for close to 24 hours. In the evening before you go to bed, moisturise your hair using your usual method (L.O.C or L.C.O etc ). It is important to use your staple products here so as not to interfere with the results of the test.  Apply the moisturiser, seal, style/prep for the morning as usual. Basically go through your normal night time routine.

In the morning style your hair as usual, but do not add any more moisturiser, water etc. Style and go. Take the time to notice how your hair feels again. The importance of this step is that the moisturiser would have had time to seep into your hair undisturbed at night, moisturise it and make the hair soft. You are testing for endurance here, so go about your day and let the weather have a go at it as well. Feel free to touch your hair from time to time  during the course of your day to monitor how soft or hard your hair is. By evening when you prepare for bed, assess your hair again. Is it still soft? Is it rough? Hard? Supple?  If your hair still feels generally soft, then you have a good moisturiser/leave-in conditioner on your hands as it kept your hair soft and supple for a whole night and day without any reapplication of product. However if it is hard or dry then you know it may not be the product for you.

  4. Well then I'll be trying this. Recently switched from profective's megagrowth leave-in to cantu argan and for some reason, I don't think my hair responds well to the cantu. I'll skip the moisture part on the first day and see how my hair feels.

    2. Yeah a new leave-in is scary to try out. The hardest part is trying it and then it doesn't work..I just think "ehhh, my money!!". Give the AN Leave-in a go :-)

  7. Based on this, I need to start searching for a new leave-in because my current one didn't pass the 24hr test.
