5 ways to switch up your natural hair when you start getting bored with it

Hi Naturalistas
Most of us are so obsessed with length that we forget to enjoy the versatility of natural hair. When I had my hair in a TWA, I never cared about the length so much, I only looked for ways to truly rock it. As my hair evolved into a mid length type, I just wanted it to jump from that stage to a long one at least because it looked boring. One day, I had an epiphany and I stopped worrying about length. I told myself that I would clear the boring premise that came with the mid length hair and spice it up as much as I could.

These are the options I tried:

1. Add a splash of color: This has so become a staple for me but I know you would want to rethink this one, especially if you want to try permanent colors. It comes with extra work to avoid hair loss. Coloring your hair weakens it, so a lot of careful planning must be done before hand, and continuously after. A safer option is to go with temporary options.

2. Rock it with shrinkage:  We just understand how to dread the shrinkage but to tell you the truth, I kinda like it sometimes. Whenever I miss my TWA days, the closest style that drives me down there is my completely shrinked hair. Find ways to add some curls and rock it.

3. The tapered look: I know, I know this is a no no for someone that cares about length.
I never liked the mid length all round Afro, so the tapered look worked best for me. It gave it a kind of structure that was different and unique and I felt like that went with my personality better.
Don't worry, by the time your hair grows long, it'll even look better if you had someone experienced do the cutting for you.

4. Show just a little bit: You can achieve this with a scarf. Tuck some parts in and let some parts fly. A quick example is to try a pineapple look and put a scarf around it. Play around with different colors of scarves to match your outfit, when you want to give off a fun look easily.

5. Tuck it away: You may not understand that feeling when you are so tired of your hair because it has evolved into something that it is not within your expertise anymore, but if you've ever experienced it, you can recall how frustrating it could be. You had become well equipped with styling a particular kind (TWA for instance) that when it grows into something else, you become so clueless. That is the best time to call a stylist to put them safely away in a nice protective style while you use the time to prepare yourself on how to better handle your hair at that stage.

Rememberto keep your heads high and rock your kinks with pride.

    1. Keep your hair moisturized - have a small spray bottle handy, with water, oils, glycerin or aloe vera juice, and a little leave-in conditioner. When your hair starts to feel dry, lightly spray your hair so there's a mist. You can seal with a hair butter to keep the moisture locked in. With time, your hair will get softer.

    2. Just to add to Berry's suggestion, deep condition a lot. Invest in a good conditioner that can promote hydration. Leave your conditioner in the hair for a couple of minutes before washing it out. Use a heated cap to promote easy penetration IOC products, and add some Shea butter to your regimen as well

  7. Thanks for the tips. I think I'm at the stage where my hair is about mid length and i'm constantly looking for ways to spice up my hairstyles. Though the good part for me is when I'm at a loss I can practically just wash it and do absolutely nothing to it and it still looks great unlike when it was a lot shorter.

  8. I've been natural for 13 months now and I'm at the point where I can't wait for it to grow already. I have 5-6 inches all over with the back and sides at 6 inches and the top at 5. I hated the TWA so much cos I've always had long hair even when I was relaxed. I can't wait for it to get to at least 10 inches. I did the BC cos my hair went so bad after pregnancy and I couldn't stand looking at it anymore. And also, I experience severe scalp burns no matter what relaxer I use(even kiddies') I have it braided most of the time now. Chiquita_bruno@yahoo.com
