Hi Guys, Long time. How have you all been doing? I have been thinking about something for a few days now. What do you think about a Natural Hair Salon in Nigeria
1. Do you like the idea?
2. What services would you expect from such a salon?
3. How would you expect it to meet you needs?
Please, let me know, as it is something I am really considering and I need to know what my potential customers really want so I can meet their expectations.

ReplyDeleteI have my natural hair on for about 2 years and usually uncomfortable going to salon cos of the snide comments i get from most stylist. Most are not patient and don't understand why i don't want to use relaxers anymore.
Just pray the salon will be in Lagos (and will be affordable too)
You are not alone o. Most commercial stylists are very ignorant about natural hair

Deletethere was a time i felt so dicouraged especially when i book a time and by the time i get there, i see ppl qeued up with relaxed hair and the stylist wants to quickly do theirs before she comes back to mine
and then i have to wait for like 20 to 30 minutes...sometimes longer and i'm just like ...omg!!...when will this end
Now to the questions:

3. I just want to be able to walk into a salon and not get the stylist frowning cos she has to comb my natural hair.
Would expect lots of advice on how to manage the hair and some creative styles too.

and other styles too that could be done with the natural hair and gels that could be added to make your hair bounce when leaving the salon and you can proudly smile and say...i just walked out of a Natural hair salon who did this for me

DeleteI am not quite sure what the Natural Hair climate is like in Nigeria right now, but I am sure there are people who would appreciate it. I would say do your research very well before venturing into it. Otherwise, it's a welcome idea :-)

ReplyDelete@The Relentless Builder: I believe the market exists now. Also, remember that most Nigerian children have natural hair. With the awareness that is hitting Nigeria now, more parents will be looking for suitable salons.

DeleteI think there is definitely a market for it. As i hear the number of natural haired adults are growing in Nigeria with more awareness and meet-ups. I would say to offer services mainstream salons don't offer, which has led to many women styling their own hair at home. Goodluck on your business plan :)

Like Curious kinks said there is a market. But I think it should offer hair care services to all natural hair types- permed or not permed, but with a strict no hair relaxing services policy, it would go a long way in encouraging girls to keep their real hair.
I started my natural hair journey last year November, and did my BC in February, I would love to go to a place I could do my hair properly, and at the same time not look like I belong to the nappy hair cult- Lagos association. LOL.
Also if you can pay a large attention to kids (Boys and Girls! Yes!) who need their natural hair done properly for school etc. it would be great. You can also use that avenue to encourage parents not to hurt their kids with chemicals, and at the same time help kids with very thick hair (like I did as a child... and now)manage their hair type.
Sha let us know when you open o. And no make am dey cost (dont make it expensive).

it would encourage people to embrace their natural hair cos many people have so many untrue beliefs about natural hair care.
It would help parents and busy people have one less thing to worry about.

ReplyDeleteI would appreciate having a good natural hair salon here in Lagos to go to where the stylists know how to be gentle with the hair and not just tug at it anyhow because they think it's tough enough to handle their merciless yanking. Many Naija stylists don't understand that natural hair should be combed and detangled starting from the tip and then worked down the hair shaft to the root. Instead they always start at the root, create knots as they run the comb up the shaft and proceed to rip the hair out. I see many children crying from this sort of thing and one time I went to tell the stylist the correct way to comb the poor child's hair and she took offense. So that's another thing- employ people who are humble and teachable.
ReplyDeleteAlso I would appreciate stylists that know a range of styles not just twists and locs because that's what I often got when I went to natural hair salons in the US (this was at least 7 years ago so I'm sure they've learned more styles now). I'd like to be to go to salons where they know how to curl natural kinky hair using bendy rollers/flexi rods, straws, curlformers and also where they knew how to do fabulous updos, which my sis and I do a lot with our hair.
Hopefully they'd also know not to rub the hair with a towel after washing as that tangles hair. These are some of the things I'd want from a good natural hair salon. And of course, stylists not behaving like they're doing me a favour for doing my hair because they happen to have the natural hair know-how.
Yep, they are really ignorant when it comes to natural hair. I don't even allow anyone comb my hair.

What a great idea! I'm doing my big chop tomorrow and am absolutely dreading going to a regular salon to get it done. Iknow theyre going to want to buzz it off with clippers or something. Or they won't understand i want to retain as much lenght as possible since after all i want to chop all my hair off anyway in their view. (I'm going from APL to 2inches of new growth). I'm also wondering where I will get my trims. I'm not wonderful at doing my own hair in a presentable way and would definitely pay to get it done! Maybe if you don't have capital yet for a premises, you would be willing to do home service where either you go to clients by appointment OR they come to you. It can be a part time thing at first if you're busy with other things. I'm serious o. I'm willing if you are and I know my mom (a long term natural) would also be very willing!

In march dis year I did kinky braids n OMG, my front hair finished! Abj ppl dnt knw ow 2 braid well..plus I'm tired of fixing I 1t 2 carry my ntural hair, it's jst hard 2 style.

Started my transition in january of this year....its been an interesting journey. Would really love 4 ur salon to get started as soon as possible. My friends have been really supportive but d stylists are just a nightmare. U would have a very huge market cuz a lot of ladies are beginning to get tired of the monthly scalp burns.

Great I'm waiting. In Accra it costs me GHS25 to do a two strand twist (I wash my hair myself). I hear same is up to N8,000 in Nigeria. Infact I think I did a comb twist at a well known salon in V/Is off Adeola Odeku, it cost me N5,000 if I remember correctly and I did not enjoy the experience. or price.

ReplyDeleteI know this is old but Nigeria has a very humid atmosphere which will spoil the best curly hair, any race included. After a year of persisting my hair stylist, she getting more natural hair customers and she seeing my hair grow from 6 inches to 10, she was now prepared to do natural hair. Unfortunately, at the saloon when she styled my hair to the envy of the people at the saloon, a 5 minutes walk home ruined my hair that it looked like soaked cotton wool balls to the horror of my mother who i was trying to impress :(. So my advice is to research on ways you can combat humidity or various weaving styles that look cute and not primary schoolish. Good luck on your venture xx
