Essential Oils VS Carrier Oils Series: COCONUT OIL

Hello everyone,

This is a continuation of the  Essential Oils and Carrier Oils. I thought it would be good to make a series out of the post and highlight some of the more popular oils. So far we've covered Olive Oil  and Castor Oil. Today's post will deal with another favorite, COCONUT OIL!

What is Coconut Oil?
Coconut oil is derived from the kernel (meat) of mature coconuts. It is high in saturated fat, making it slow to oxidize, and can last up to 2 years without spoiling (this is what Wikipedia says, but I'm pretty sure nobody's stockpiling bottles of Coconut oil). Coconut oil can be extracted through a Dry or Wet process. In the Dry process, the coconut "meat" is dried and pressed to extract the oil. In the Wet process, the raw kernel is pressed, producing a mix of oil and water, which then has to be separated. Coconut oil is widely used for cooking and skin care (also fuel transportation in some parts of Asia).*

It is a CARRIER OIL, so it can be applied directly to hair. *I've featured only carrier oils so far, so maybe I'll switch it up next week*

Benefits of Coconut Oil use on Natural Hair
  • Growth - Coconut oil binds to the protein in our hair, and aids in growth, by making hair stronger. Stronger hair means less breakage, and less breakage means healthier growth.
  • Moisturizes/conditions hair - Coconut oil's molecules are small enough to penetrate into the hair shaft, is attracted to and binds with the natural protein structure of hair, which makes it a great moisturizer. I also read that the best way to use Coconut oil is to put in your hair OVERNIGHT, and then wash it out the following morning. Remember however that OIL IS NOT MOISTURE, so you would still need to dampen your hair before applying coconut oil.
  • Scalp health - Because Coconut Oil helps retain moisture, dandruff, dry scalp, itchy scalp and other scalp issues are usually.
  • Strengthens hair - If you have dry or damaged hair, regular application of Coconut oil is sure to get your hair back to a healthy state. See above points.
Uses in your Hair Care Regimen
  • Pre-poo (Overnight) Treatment
  • Detangling
  • Protein Treatment (mixed with eggs)
  • Hot Oil Treatment
  • Moisturizer (in your Spray Bottle)

I haven't used Coconut Oil in my hair care regimen, ever! Well, not directly. I've used one or two DooGro oil mixes, and they might have contained coconut oil. Do you use coconut oil in your hair care regimen, and how? See how AN made her own coconut oil here. Have you ever made your own coconut oil? If you have, share your experience with us.

You can also purchase the African Naturalistas Coconut Oil from the shop
