Dabbling in Hair Products previously linked to other races!

Hallo Lovelies! I hope and trust that you are all really well and happy! With the whole Natural Takeover, people of African descent have found that products which had previously been linked to other races for haircare, works just fine if not splendidly on our own Afro textured hair! One range which had previously had the Black community snub it pre-Natural Era, is Herbal Essences.

Detangling must be one of the nightmarish rituals most naturals dread but have to do religiously, in order to avoid having a tangled mop of hair, which would eventually break and snap off. If you are a New natural, it is important to keep an open mind in regards to product trials, before you settle on a tried, tested and true staple item. Here, I dabble in some detangling trial with Herbal Essences, Tousle me softly Conditioner,a range designed to target textured hair. I was pleasantly surprised.....

  1. I've been doing some dabbling myself. The one thing I can say that works wonders is glycerine! My hair is soft for days after use.
But I do have an issue, I don't know if I should be worried but when I comb my twa quite a bit of hair falls out.

    1. Are you combing your hair while it is dry? If so, try to do the following spritz your hair with water or water mixed with that glycerine. Then comb your hair. If you are combing your hair while damp and it is still falling out, make sure that the hair is only shedded hair not breakage. Shedded hair has white bulb at the end of the hair. It is normal to shed about 100 strands of hair a day.

    2. Oh no! That means it's breakage. I comb my hair both damp or dry but either way it breaks off. There's no white bulb just curls of hair everywhere. What can I do bout it?

  2. Suffered a major tangle episode after I took out braids and washed my hair. Had to keep spraying the hair to moisurize and make it easier to untangle. My 'market woman stylist' was perplexed. Going natutaral is comfortable but requires discipline my dears. Stella Vajime stellarzaza@gmail.com

    1. Hi Sis!Thank you for commenting!Maybe next time you could try and use a good conditioner with extra slip mixed in with a little Extra Virgin Olive Oil.Let it sit on your hair for about thirty minutes and the gently try to finger detangle the hair section by section. The Oil adds extra slip for the detangling process.Try not to wet tangled hair with water as that just increases the tangles, hope this helps.

  4. or maybe not.

anyways to the koko that brought me here. i suffer from stunted hair growth syndrome, my hair (nappy) is short, scanty (as in light weight)

in recent times i have become more frustrated o! the back of my hair is completely gone, as if its not bad enough that it doesnt grow fast, why will it break again!

I do protein treatment once a month, deep condition once a week, spray with water or hawaiin silky conditioner and seal with ori every other day, yet my hair is as dry as harmattan. the only thing i havent tried out is the silk bonnet cuz i havent seen to buy!

my hair wasnt this dry when i was relaxed

i even do oil treatment randomly

I am at my wits end o jare

    1. Kpele dear. It is well. I'm just a new naturalista so I don't know much. But u should get a silk or satin bonnet or scarf. Try wrapping d scarf over ur pillow if u know it won't stay on ur head. It's what I do. And u could try baggying. Used to do it when I was relaxed n it made my new growth so easy to comb thru. It's where u moisturise and seal at night, then cover ur head with a plastic bag or shower cap, and go to sleep. U can help it along with a giant scarf round ur head to generate more heat. The next day, I promise u, moisture for days. N take it easy with ur hair. Don't detangle except wet or damp. Hope all these help

    2. You should try testing your hair's porosity, either high or low porosity could be leading to your hair not responding to the products you put in it. There are a lot of youtube videos and hair blogs that talk about hair porosity, look them up and see if that helps

    3. My dear,
Sorry o. The technique that you use to moisturize your hair really matters. Layering products is the best way to moisturize natural hair. There are different techniques, you just have to find one that works for you. I have 2 daughters and they use different technique. Here are some

      Technique 1: LOC method
Spritz hair with water or mixture of water and aloe vera juice
      Apply your oil of choice
      Apply a moisturizing cream

      Technique 2: LCO method
Spritz hair with water or mixture of water and aloe vera juice
      Apply a moisturizing cream
      Apply your oil of choice

      Technique 3: LOCO method
Spritz hair with water or mixture of water and aloe vera juice
      Apply your oil of choice
      Apply a moisturizing cream
Apply a thick oil like Castor Oil

      Technique 4: LOCS method
Spritz hair with water or mixture of water and aloe vera juice
      Apply your oil of choice
      Apply a moisturizing cream
Apply thick butter, like Shea butter, ori, to seal.

Give either of these techniques a try. REMEMBER, Natural hair is "naturally" dry, so, it will never be as silky feeling like relaxed hair. Also, having a spritz helps (recipe on my Youtube channel).

    5. Hey dear
Your explanation really describes a typical case of what allowing your hair to rub on rough surfaces can do. Obviously, like you mentioned, you moisturizer well but you are experiencing dryness because everything just rubs away on your pillow. You are losing hair more around your nape (and rear parts) because this is the part that contacts your pillow the most while sleeping.

Try to protect your hair with a silk/satin coverage and start monitoring it again for any changes

      Good luck!
