Diary of an Honest Naturalista: Week 118

Work has been kind of crazy lately. It seemed they decided I was to idle, and they determined to increase my workload so much that I wouldn’t even think of doing anything extra with my life, like I did in the past. I am reporting directly to Yemisi with the chameleon hair now, and her coolness brings a balance to all the stress.

So I was so shocked and disappointed. Last week, I spotted Mr dreadlocks. I almost did not recognise him. He had cut off his locs!!!!

I was so heartbroken, and took it really personal.

I asked myself why? After all the work his line manager put in to make sure he had the freedom to wear his hair the way he wanted, he had to go and disappoint all of us, and cut his dreads.

He was our point of reference, the one we all showed to everyone to prove that we were cool, young, hippie, and liberal in our office, while still being excellent at what we do.

He was our poster child – and now, he had let us down!

I even almost cried. Imagine if Yemisi became just a regular girl, with regular hair. I would just resign, and accept that the world has come to an end. It is not even possible.

I imagined the HR manager grinning in her office when she sees Mr Dreadlocks without his locs. She would smile a smile of victory, even though in reality, her prowess had nothing to do with the disappearance of his locs.

So I asked him why he cut his hair, he said he was tired of it, and he felt that phase was over for him.
I didn’t buy his excuse, but after all, it was his hair, not mine, although the way I took it personal, one would have thought it was my hair.

So he said he never thought he was going to take his locs off, but it got to that point that he just had to, though it felt like he was cutting off a part of him, like his legs. I tried to understand where he was coming from, but I couldn’t really relate with his sentiments. He has had dreadlocks for such a long time, though he keeps it at a short length by trimming it regularly.

I found it had to understand why he really felt he should cut it, if he felt like he was cutting off a part of him. I couldn’t marry the two together.

The weirdest part for me was when he said he was so attached to his locs that he has refused to throw them away, and has them locked up in a box somewhere.

As in seriously? I asked what he would use them to do. He said nothing, but he doesn’t think he would ever dispose of them because they are a part of him. I just couldn’t get it. If I kept all the hair I had trimmed off my head, then my whole house would be filled with wisps of hair.

Anyway after a while, I let Mr Dreadlocks, now known as Mr Former Dreadlocks be. There’s no need to drink Panadol for someone else’s headache. Life is already hard enough.

    1. Aww. Maybe you should ask other guys who cut off their dreads how they felt when they did.

  4. I like that Panadol saying and really have to start applying it lol! This just makes me wonder if at some point we might start to look at Natural Hair as just a phase to be seen through like Mr.Dreadlocks!Great read as per usual!

    1. Yes, that panadol quote is very popular in Nigeria. We need to learn to not sweat the small stuff.

    1. While I don't see natural hair as a 'team', I don't agree that team natural is reducing. Many people are going natural these days, especially now that there's a lot of information out there.

    2. yes oh... people are going natural everyday, even the old..

  6. Lol, we always seem to be more attached to other people's hair than they are to it you know. But it does seem like such a waste to cut his locs just after they got approved. He wore a wig to cover them up for crying out loud!

    1. Yeah, but he wore the wig for just a short while when he relocated to work in Nigeria. He has had dreadlocks for much longer than that, so the phase had been very long for him. Isn't he entitled to tiredness? Lol.

  7. I would feel the same way as he did only if I relaxed my hair. Cutting it, no biggie. But if I ever relaxed, I would feel like a part of me is gone.
