'I love the attention I get 'cause of how I style my Natural Hair' Mane Matters with Chika Osuji

Hi Naturalistas,

How is the week going?

Meet Chika

Enjoy!

Can you tell us who you are and what you do?
I am chika osuji, from IMO state but born and raised in Jos, Plateau state, I currently live in Lagos state.

What are your thoughts about natural hair?
I studied mass communication but I'm an interior designer and a business person.

When/why did you decide to go natural?
I think natural hair is really awesome and pretty; it brings out your real beauty.

Did you do a BC or you transitioned?
Well...its not like I sat down to think about going natural, I just found myself keeping my hair.I was on low cut for a while through out secondary school and like a year after.
Then I just started styling my hair myself and fixing weapons.I never liked going to the salon then and so I fixed my hair myself most times and it began to grow...I noticed it was really cool and getting a lot of attention and questions so I went with the flow. I had a number of people who couldn't wait for me to relax my hair, like there was a list of people who were waiting to the length after I retouch it,but I've never had plans for that and I still don't.

What was the experience like?
So far being natural has been a nice journey, I love the attention I get cause I style my hair quite obvious... Some people don't know me,don't know my name but the know the girl"with the big hair" or the girl with the "crazy hairstyle". At first when I started the natural thingy I was like the only person gone natural and that was about 2009 there about,I had no idea how to maintain it, it was difficult combing and maintaining... People will laugh at the hair in the salon and sarcastically say I should cut it....but over the years I've become a Pro in maintaining my hair and styling .

Do you have a regimen you stick to? What is it like?
Because I have been  natural before the advent naturalistas and team natural, I don't do anything serious to maintain may hair,I do some protective styles ,wash and keep it oiled and moist when necessary.

There are people that definitely have negative comments about your hair, how do you deal with that?
Sure people always have something to say, when I Carry it afro, some are like your head is big,you look like a mad person, don't you have money to make your hair, and some just hate cause you need guts to carry some stlyes?my response is always India Arie's song "I am not my hair, I am not your expectation. I smile and let it pass.
What's your must have product and accessory?
I always have my gel activator for easy styling , baby oil, tiny black hair pins:they do some magic for quick styling.
What advice do you have for anyone just going natural?
For those just going natural, its not magical your hair will grow and just like everything it also needs patience, don't go using  just anything because you want a quick growth.the truth is I trim my hair often cause there are  some styles I won't be able to do when its too long. So enjoy the growth process and love your hair no matter the length.

  2. I love your story. It's great how you never let anyone dictate what you should do with your hair. And that is some gorgeous hair.
