Trichology Corner: Seborrhoea and Seborrheic dermatitis

This is caused by the overproduction of sebum in the sebaceous gland, or by a dysfunction of the sebaceous gland.

Signs of Seborrheic dermatitis

1. It is an inflammatory condition characterised by dry and moist scales, crust, itching and redness.
2. It commonly occurs in the frontal hair of the scalp, and around the hairline, and can also occur on the eyelids, facial hair, breasts, and other areas of the body.

Causes

1. The causes of seborrhoea or seborrheic dermatitis are generally unknown, but linked to genetic factors. Because it relates to the dysfunction of the sebaceous glands, it is predicated by stress.
2. Hormonal changes can also cause the onset of seborrheic dermatitis by inducing excessive sebaceous activity. This can start up during adolescence in a lot of people with the onset of androgen production.

    1. Yes, as long as they see white scales, they call it dandruff. If your sister suspects seborrheic dermatitis, let her see me or any other trichologist for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

    1. That's only getting rid of the symptom, and not really managing the condition.
