"I'm tall, so I felt that short hair won't suit me." Mane matters with Mabel Alubo

Good Morning Naturalistas,

We bring to you today Mabel.. Enjoy!

AN:Can you tell us who you are and what you do?

I'm Mabel Alubo and I'm a final year microbiology student.

AN: What's your thoughts about natural hair?

I love natural hair! It's so versatile and beautiful.

AN: Why did you decide to go natural?

I've cut my hair over 6 times before. No relaxer was good for my hair, I used to have no edges, bald patches and extreme breakage.

AN: Did you do a BC or you transitioned?

I BC'd 17 months ago because my hair was badly damaged.

AN: Any fears about the BC?

Yes! I'm tall so I felt that short hair won't suit me.

AN: What has your experience been?

The experience has been very educative. I've found that my research on healthy hair has lead me to learning healthy habits as well. I love experimenting with different styles also.

AN: What was/is your biggest fear about going Natural?

I love weaves and I love the look of leaving my hair out on weaves. I was sad that I wouldn't be able to do that any more without my hair being long and without using heat. I also didn't feel comfortable going to school with my naps because people always have stuff to say

AN: Do you think you are in it for the long haul or is it just a phase?

Definitely for the long haul! For me it's about having healthy hair. I'm tired of starting over. I don't mind regular trims as long as my hair stays healthy.

AN: Do you have any hair regimen you stick to?

Not really. I always switch it up and add something that my hair seems to agree with. I spritz and moisturise using the L.O.C (Liquid/Leave-in/ Oil/ Cream) method. Sometimes L.C.O seals on moisture better for me too. I co-wash about every 3 days when my hair is not in a protective style because I style with gel alot. I also deep condition weekly and do the inversion scalp massage every month for 7 days.

AN: What's your go-to protective style?

I love all kinds of braids! Box, yarn, marley, faux locs and I love weaves.

AN: What's your must have product and accessory?

Cantu leave-in conditioning cream. Must have accessory is a shoelace (for afro puffs) LOL. And a flower crown

AN: What's your advice to anyone planning to ditch relaxers?

Just do it! BC incase you get tempted to change your mind. Lol. Or make sure you are certain it is what you want. Love your hair and keep it healthy, there's a difference between healthy hair and just natural hair.

Thank you for your time.
