If you're quite into social media like I am, you would have come across the images I want to share today. A young man called Johnson Donatus Aihumekeokhai Ojeikere was a Nigerian photographer. In the 1960's he embarked on a project photographing hairstyles on women he encountered in Nigeria. He had over 1000 photographs!!! I think the photos take us back in history and to a time when natural hair was worn in so many distinctive and creative styles.
Berry Dakara.
Many of these styles were still around in the nineties, cos a lot of primary school kids, deeper life and CAC members do these styles
ReplyDeleteAs of now, out of these styles, I can only do the Didi style and Bantu Knots. I see the Bantu Knots have always been around, in different formats
i remember those styles too. I enjoyed doing the 3rd style as a child. somehow those styles are now for kids or certain "religious groups",
DeleteI think the third style is current in different variations today. At least I've seen 3 different women this year alone with something similar.
ReplyDeleteSeriously how were they sleeping? loool
ReplyDeleteNow. that's something I would also like to know, lol.
DeleteLOL!!!
DeleteThe first style will be perfect for a 60's inspired Photo-Shoot, but the pains........hmmmmm
ReplyDeleteWeeellllll I can definitely do didi but I think I'm still beta off admiring threaded hair on oda ppl dan actually doing them.

Afro was a hairdo that was rocked also.
ReplyDeleteI think I can rock a threaded hair now but it would be with extention and not the shining thread. The end result would be a contemporary threaded hair that can be styled daily.
I remember the koroba style was the 1st hairstyle I made when I was growing my hair as a child. I think I was 6 then. But these thread hairstyle looks painful *yikes
