Natural Hair in the 60's

Yo yo!!!

If you're quite into social media like I am, you would have come across the images I want to share today. A young man called Johnson Donatus Aihumekeokhai Ojeikere was a Nigerian photographer. In the 1960's he embarked on a project photographing hairstyles on women he encountered in Nigeria. He had over 1000 photographs!!! I think the photos take us back in history and to a time when natural hair was worn in so many distinctive and creative styles.

  1. Many of these styles were still around in the nineties, cos a lot of primary school kids, deeper life and CAC members do these styles

As of now, out of these styles, I can only do the Didi style and Bantu Knots. I see the Bantu Knots have always been around, in different formats

  2. I think the third style is current in different variations today. At least I've seen 3 different women this year alone with something similar.

  7. Afro was a hairdo that was rocked also.
I think I can rock a threaded hair now but it would be with extention and not the shining thread. The end result would be a contemporary threaded hair that can be styled daily.
