Dealing with Dry Brittle Natural Hair

With natural hair, you will encounter some dryness in your child's hair at one point. If this issue is not addressed, the hair can become brittle and then start to break. The suggestions below can help you tackle that problem.

Check your ingredients
Some products used on the hair can contain ingredients that can contribute to dryness. One specific ingredient that has been known to do this is Sodium Laureth Sulfate. This exists in a lot of shampoos and is known to thoroughly cleanse the hair. If the hair is not properly protected prior and after using sulfate shampoos, the hair can become dry.  Research your products' ingredients.

Moisturizing by Layering
One of the best way to moisture natural hair is it in layers. The most common way is called the LOC Method.  In this method, you first spritz the hair with liquid (water or water mixed with aloe vera juice), then you apply some natural oil, and then apply your moisturizing cream.  Other methods are the LCO Method where you apply the cream prior to the oil. Don't forget to lock in the moisture by applying a thick oil or butter like Shea butter at the ends of the hair. This last step is known as Sealing your ends. This process can be done as needed. In the colder and dryer season, I do this daily.

Deep Conditioning Regularly
One of the most skipped steps when it comes to washing your kids' hair is Deep Conditioning. This is a very crucial step because deep conditioning has so many great benefits. Some of the benefits are hydrating the hair, providing the hair follicle with great nutrients, softening the hair, providing shine and conditioning the hair. It also helps repair damaged and dry hair. Deep conditioning is a step we do every wash day.

Re-moisturize when necessary
If you find that at night your child's hair is a bit dry, a light spritz can help hydrate the hair through the night. Here is a way to create a daily spritzer and have fun with your child while doing it. The great thing about spritz is that you can add different types of oils to help target your child's hair needs.

Protect Hair at Night
Protecting your child's hair at night can help keep the moisture lasting longer and prevent dryness. Using a satin or silk bonnet to protect the hair helps. Make sure that the edges of the bonnet is not too tight. If your child is not comfortable with wearing bonnets or scarfs, you can invest in a satin or silk pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases are known to soak up the moisture from the hair, therefore this should be avoided.

  7. For me the key to retaining moisture was understanding my hair's porosity. I have low porosity so I must heat my moisturizer otherwise it just sits on top of my hair.
