AN: Can you tell us who you are and what you do?
I’m Fola Folayan, a radio talk show host, social media Publicist, lover of music and preacher of God’s word.
AN: What are your thoughts about natural hair?
I think natural African hair is beautiful. There’s a lot that can be done with it, and when treated right, it’s a beauty to behold on any woman.
AN: Why did you decide to go natural?
I decided to go natural when I realized the whole perm look was not agreeing with my hair. It was like my hair hated chemicals. I suffered breakages, relaxers burned my scalp, I could’nt even carry weaves. I knew I had had enough.
AN: What made you decide dreadlocks?
I have always admired locks, and when I made the decision to go natural, it was the only option I considered. I love the unconventional look, and it’s carefree nature.
AN: How long have you had the dreads?
Since 2008
AN: What has your experience been?
Oh my goodness! It’s been great! I love my hair from day 1. When it was really small, it was a lot of trouble, keeping up with the regular locking schedule, but as soon as it grew out, it was no longer a challenge and I’ve been enjoying it since.
AN: What was/is your biggest fear about dreadlocks?
None J absolutely none! J
AN: There are people that definitely have negative comments about your hair, how do you deal with that?
Oh yes. When I started, I got a lot of negative comments. Some folks felt it was unchristian, my mum kept asking when I was going to cut it off, some people said I will never find a man who will agree to marry a dreadlocked woman (hahahahaa) all sorts of comments. Now, sisters in church are all asking me how they can lock their hair! Lol When I step into a room, I get noticed. J
AN: What’s your must have product and accessory?
An anti-dandruff shampoo, scented shear butter, and Oil spray.
AN: What’s your hair regimen like?
Nothing special, I prefer to lock once in 2 months, I wash and condition my hair myself every 3 days, and I don’t use driers. I let it dry naturally. I also color my hair once a year.
AN: What’s most challenging for you taking care of/keeping the dreads?
No challenges as it were…except my dry scalp that I have to always keep from flaking! lol
AN: What’s your advice to anyone planning to take the dreadlocks lane?
Go for it girl!! Lol… seriously though, make sure you can stomach the extra stares and attention, and make sure you find a good stylist that genuinely cares about your hair.\
AN: Thank you for your time
You’re welcome!
