Steps to take to avoid Natural hair salon disaster

Hello Naturalistas,

How have you all been? Kinks and all? I really hope well. Since we established that Natural hair salons are expensive, I wanted to bring us information to help us to avoid any disaster when we go to a traditional salon with your natural hair.

I know the look of frustration on the look of the hair stylist (in a traditional salon) and the numerous comments and questions you'd get with regards to your hair... From the "Why don't you retouch it" to "How do you even manage to comb it". The complaints are endless.

The first thing you need is to make up your mind to not answer them and not to be intimidated by whatever it is they have to say. I mean, you are paying them to do your hair not pass off comments about it. This is not to say  "be nasty", there is a polite way to let them know that their comments won't change anything.

Next thing is to make sure you go with all your products that you want them to use. There is no rule that says that you have to let them use their products on your hair, and with the tale of salons mixing relaxers with their shampoos/conditioners. If in some situation you can't go with your products, ask questions.

Which brings me to the next, let your voice be visible. Yes! Very visible. Talk! Ask questions! Give Instructions! Because "Madam sorry" won't fix a damaged hair. If they would be using their products for your hair, ask questions about it. If heat, instruct them on how you want them to do it. If styling, instruct, tell them not to pull etc. It is better you are the unbearable customer with good hair than the 'nice' one with damaged hair. You get it?

If you can't always afford a natural hair salon, doesn't mean you can't have our natural hair taken care of properly. The beauty of it is, when you use a particular salon for a while, they know your preference and go with it as time goes on.

Go ahead to have a budget-friendly hair styling!

  1. "Madam sorry " won't fix it true true o. I made a mistake last week Saturday while they were threading my hair, I was so tired and was sleeping. Mistake number 1. As I opened my eyes the hairstylist decided to do her own style. I was upset and told them to loosen it. After much thought, itold her to adjust it to the picture igave her else no payment.
So please add make sure you don't sleep while they " traditional hair stylist " are making your hair.

  3. Great tips. Since going natural in 2012, I haven't got to a salon yet. When I do, I will remember these tips. Thanks!

  4. I make sure I properly detangle, moisturize and seal my hair before visiting any salon. If not my hair is in trouble.

  5. One lady doing my hair told me I am so fussy with my hair. I told her that's why it's looking this good. She agreed that I had a point. Our hair, our rules. Thanks for this Tomilola

  6. Never been to a salon since I went natural. The only time I allowed someone to touch my hair was just once during the harmattan period. And she was just perfect. I gave her a detangled and moisturized hair and there was no fuss whatsoever.

  7. I tried getting braids at traditional stylist, she almost ripped out all the hair on my scalp, not to talk of my hard earned edges. I gently told her to loosen it packed my bags and walked away.

  8. Me? Regular salon? Neveeerrrrr! I'd rather sit in my house and use 8 hours to twist my hair, while watching Walter White and Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad. At least, I will have peace of mind.
