Herbal infusions are my new obsessions. So basic, yet effective.
Ever since I discovered them, my head has been agog with all of the possible infusions I can incorporate into my general routine. But first, my natural hair.
Infusions are basically the process of extracting chemical compounds and flavours from plants i.e dried herbs, leaves, stems and flowers.
In order to make a infusion, you need a solvent which can either be water, oil or vinegar.
The easiest and fastest infusions to make are water - based. This just requires steeping the herbs in hot water and leaving it for about 1-4 hours before straining.
Fun fact: Herbal teas are actually infusions.
The other method involves is oil/vinegar based. This involves soaking your dried herbs in a glass jar filled with a carrier oil - Olive oil is the best for infusions - and leaving it for about 3-4 weeks in a dark place. Every few days, you take it out and shake until the 4 weeks are up before straining.
Now, what are the best herbs for natural hair?
There are a myriad of them available but it depends on where you get them. Major supermarkets usually stock well labelled packaged herbs. But, if you know your way around the market, go for it.
Lavender, Rosemary, Basil, Sage, Thyme, Horsetail, Nettle, Lemongrass, Chamomile, Peppermint, Amla, Burdock Root, Hibiscus, Parlsey, Peppermint, e.t.c.
I currently have Rosemary, Sage, Basil, Hibiscus, Chamomile and Peppermint.
So, once you're done infusing, what then can you use it for?
Hair Rinses. Hair Spritz. Herbal shampoos. Herbal infused oils. Herbal Vinegar rinses.
Whatever it is you use water for, you can substitute it for a herbal infusion. How healthy can it possibly be?
Has anyone tried herbal infusions? If yes, what are your combinations?
