Meet Fejiro
Can you tell us who you are and what you do?
My name is fejiro, a freelancer and IT operations analyst.
When/why did you decide to go natural?
I have had my natural hair since septemeber 2014 which makes it one year and 1mnth. I decided to go natural because my hair stoped growing...i ll say that because my hair didnt exceed my neck length for up to 5years. I went on youtube and saw videos of african ladies' hair that grew up to waist length...i had to take the challenge...i can do this!
Did you do a BC or you transitioned?
I didnt transitioned, i took a bold step, took courage and did a big chop...so so low.
What was the experience like?
At first it wasnt easy getting used to the thick afro hair and having to comb the hair everytime... i use to see water as my hair's enemy because it shrinks after getting in contact with water and my hair shrinkage i ll rate my hair shrinkage on a scale of 10 to be 9. When the hair was really short, i was always on protective styles..i was too shy to let out my short natural hair but now that am use to natural life style, it is different.
What was/is your biggest fear about going Natural?
I didnt really have any fear about going natural...anything to make my hair grow..i was up for it...so since natural was the way to go then i m up for it. But i miss my remy hair cos i love to let my hair out when i do human hair sew in but now i cant do that cos my natural hair texture can't match with remy hair.
Do you have a regimen you stick to? What is it like?
I don't really do anything special to the hair...i just give it what it needs...hair needs moisture and protein to grow...so i feed the hair with 'em.
What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
The struggle i have with going natural is that now i spend too much time paying attention to my hair..it s easier if it was permed...natural hair,i have to twist my hair or corn row before going to bed if am not wearing a protective style so my hair dont tangle and shrink... i have to wash and condition as often as possible.
Do you think you are in it for the long haul or is it just a phase?
I don't think this is a phase, it is already a life style for me...i have adjusted to this life and it is now part of me... i have decided to keep my natural hair cos i love the thick afro look.
There are people that definitely have negative comments about you hair, how do you deal with that?
The only negative comments i get about my hair is when i go to d salon, most hair stylist in nigeria dont appreciate natural hair...they feel like it is a lot work and they charge more money for it...some can't even handle natural hair and start saying " you have a very thick hair, go and add relaxer".
What's your must have product and accessory?
My must have products are shea moisture shampoo...it cleans my hair so nice...before i went natural i use to suffer from dandruff...the shea moisture shampoo helped my scalp a lot...it leaves your scalp clean. Also i love my hair band for my afro look. And i cant do without my biotin supplement
I use natrol maximun strength 10,000mcg... it helped my hair in growing fast in such a short time.
What is your go-to style?
I love my puff style with a bang at the front also i love how my hair respond to twist out style...looks like marley braid...lol...
What advice do you have for anyone just going natural?
My advice is that Nigerian stylist needs to start appreciating the african hair, the full and thick afro.... they should be able to see the benefit of going natural and be able to convince their clients. To all the lovely ladies going natural...all i can say is have patience on your hair... we have the good and bad hair day.

Lovely hair you got there.
ReplyDeleteNatural hair movement is definitely becoming a life style for a lot of people.
I haven't tried biotin and I doubt I would ever go that route.
I often wonder if hair would sprout out from other parts of my body as well and that I can't deal.
Spot on!
DeleteI still don't understand the rationale behind pills though.
Lol.I thought about that also (hair sprouting in parts I don't want)
DeleteLol.I thought about that also (hair sprouting in parts I don't want)
Deleteit does more than help to grow hair
DeleteI use biotin too
ReplyDeleteAnd it works well for you without breakouts?
DeleteLol.Idy,same thoughts here.
ReplyDeleteAs in over drive right...
DeleteNice hair there and some good hair retention.I like the bangs,do you flat-iron to get it that way?
ReplyDeleteWow, her bangs are banging.
ReplyDeleteI want to try biotin, but for my nails, not really hair.
ReplyDeleteBerry Dakara Blog
it really works
DeleteDrugs. Will probably start considering it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think i will though
ReplyDeleteThey ain't just pills. They re food supplements
ReplyDeleteYour hair is beautiful and so full. The reason why I don't want to use biotin is because so many people complain of breakouts and mehn I don't want that.Yeah, true Nigerian hairstylists need to learn how to take care of natural hair.
ReplyDeleteI see people are scared of taking biotin in rhe name that it is a drug and scared for side effect. BIOTIN supplement is like any other regular supplements like vit c, vit a , zinc, omega 3..etc. we re suppose to get the supply of these nutrients from the food we eat...but sometimes we dnt get enough of the required nutrient....some people dnt eat enough of the food that gives this nutrients....that is where the supplement pills comes useful... they are suppose to top up the low nutrient level so that nutrient can carry out its function. Biotin is not a miracle pill for hair.... it just tops of the biotin level in the body and biotin is also required for healthy hair, skin and nails...not just hair alone. U can read more about it online. Every body's bodybis different and we react differently to biotin...for me i never had bad experience with biotin..no excessive body growing hair..no break outs. If u think u re prong to break out then i advice u to start with the lowest dose and work ur way up...u can start low as 500mcg. I use 10,000mcg which is the highest. Learn to read ur body and how it react. I just did my trimming cos my hair was breaking alot so i had to trim the split ends so i lost about 1/2 inch off my hair.
ReplyDeleteThanks you for the clarification
