Unlike what we're becoming accustomed to, this event celebrated all hair types - Natural, Relaxed, Texlaxed, Loc'd and everything in between.
Faux locs meets real locs |
She's a naturalista who's a hair stylist and makes fabulous custom wigs, like this one. |
Anyone recognize Ekene of TheKinkAndI? |
There were lots of vendors selling hair and beauty products, and of course, African Naturalistas was there as well.
The first part of the event saw 4 panelists and the host tell us their Healthy Hair Journeys.
Atilola aka Miss African Naturalistas (as I like to call her), was one of the speakers.
A recurring theme from everyone's presentations was "What works for me, may not necessarily work for you." For instance, one person mentioned that she loves tea rinses, which another person's hair dislikes. For some people, Aloe Vera Juice is the shiznit, and for others, they get reactions. The things to take away in your quest for taking care of your hair are that
- There are no hard and fast rules - besides making sure your hair/scalp stays clean and moisturized (water is absolutely necessary)
- If you want to try out a product, use a sample and test a small patch of hair.
- Know your hair! You are unique and so is your hair. Know what works and what doesn't
- There will be setbacks in your journey. Don't beat yourself up about it. Just continue from there or restart if you have to.
The third section was Dabs showing how she installs instant faux locs. I had volunteered myself, and gotten most of it done the Friday before. On Sunday she demonstrated it live to the audience. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that Dabs came up with a way to install faux locs that literally cuts the time in half. I was pretty much done in 3 hours, instead of the standard 6 to 8 hours it usually takes.
