Trichology Corner: How Crochet Hairstyles are slowly killing your Hair (2)

Thank you for staying tuned to this column and this topic in particular. On last edition of Trichology corner, we mentioned how crotchet hairstyles can damage your hair. If you missed it, click here.
Now that it has been established, we now know that crotchet hairstyles can create holes in your hair shafts, and even if the holes don’t weaken them, which they will, the holes will cause other damages.

So how do we prevent these damages from happening to our hair shafts if we really love to crochet our hair? Well, we have heard the statement “too much of anything is bad.”

We see ladies go to the salon, take down one crochet braid, and immediately, wear another crochet hairstyle, after washing and conditioning their hair.

The first thing we can do to prevent this damage is to reduce the rate at which we wear crochet hairstyles, if we must wear it at all. You can wear it for a longer time, in order to reduce the rate of manipulation, and then reduce the rate at which it is done. Twice or thrice a year is enough, in order to give poking our hair shafts a break.

Another way to prevent crochet hairstyles damage is to do a protein treatment, in order to give our hair strands more strength, and possibly plug holes temporarily. We can do this after we take down the crochet, or at regular intervals of once in three to six months. Please note that doing a protein treatment too often is bad for our hair strands.

Anyone who is in love with crochet hairstyles should regularly check their hair for damages, and then trim regularly so the existing damages don’t further damage the hair strands.

Is there any scalp disorders, hair shaft disorders, or any hair science topic you would like us to trash out on Trichology corner? Please, let us know in the comment section.
