10 Times Issa Rae Gave Us TWA Inspiration On Insecure

A couple of months ago, just before the beginning of season two, I included HBO's Insecure to my list of TV shows.

After successfully succumbing to peer pressure, I binge-watched the first season so that I could catch up with the second. To be honest, unlike every other fan of the show, I was a bit disappointed.I thought it was overrated. Maybe because the show was completely unrelatable to me and not all that funny. Call me Goody Two Shoes if you like. But I continued watching till the end of season two because one thing stood out for me; Creator and Lead actress Issa Rae's TWA.

I started to notice the former YouTube star at the beginning of the year precisely during the 2017 Golden Globes awards where she was styled by the one and only Felicia Leatherwood who also happens to be her stylist on Insecure. But then after watching a few episodes, I began to really notice her natural hair such that I was actually tempted to cut mine. Yup! That serious.

Her auburn (?) TWA has been styled about 16 different ways or more throughout the two seasons. If that isn't enough TWA Inspiration, I can't help you. All I need now is for Felicia Leatherwood to put out a YouTube playlist of all of Issa's hairstyles and then I'll cut my hair.

Anyway, without further ado, here are ten times Issa Rae gave us TWA Inspiration on Insecure.

  • This conrowed faux hawk

  • The classic afro puff

  • The braided updo

  •  Cornrows are always in!

  • Another spin to the faux hawk with a cornrow

  • The gorgeous formal updo with bangs

  • The cornrow low puff

  • The side-braided wash and go

  • Another faux hawk with twists

  • The braided puff

Issa and/or Felicia are clearly fans of the faux hawk. But then again, it's a TWA. Faux Hawks always look good with TWAs which is why they tried different options. I have a feeling we are still going to see more of them in season 3.

Probably the best thing about Issa's style choices is how casual yet stylish they are. This is enough temptation to cut my hair.

Anyway, which style(s) are your favourite?

  1. ... And all I did during the TWA stage were twists and "struggle puff"
