Diary of an Honest Naturalista: Week 135

It’s a new yearrrrrr. I’m so excited about this year. I cannot recall being excited about a new year as much as I am about this one, even though I am always positive. I’m not moved one bit about the prediction of doom and hard times in the country. I’m still excited.

I spent the New Year mostly indoors, planning the direction of my life, career, small business, and other things. I’m really optimistic.

Concerning my hair care practices, I would like to be more adventurous with styles. I loved the fact that I was able to try Bantu knots and old school threading last year. I am on the look for other things that would interest me.

The year started on an interesting note. I remember my friend/colleague, yemisi, the adventurous sanguine, who has been engaged for three years without a wedding date, and playing the role of a live-in lover.  Well, last December, her family gave her and her fiancé an ultimatum to either get married or call it quits.

Apparently, her dad is a no-nonsense pastor who wasn’t aware she had been living with her fiancé all these while. Her parents stay outside Lagos, and thought she was living with a regular flatmate. When they found out towards the end of last year, it wasn’t pretty at all, not that Yemisi was moved, anyway.

So we were chatting on Saturday, and she went “Guess what, I’m getting married.”

I was like “Of course, you are getting married. You have been engaged since like forever.”

“No, seriously. I’m getting married. As in, we have set a date.”

“Wow, really? Congrats, I’m really happy for you.”

“But, Anna, I’m not as excited as I thought I would be.”

I could picture a nonchalant demeanour on her as she was typing. “It’s understandable, since you have been living with him for a long time now.”

“Yeah, I guess. But still, I should be at least, happy that something is changing. Maybe I’ve been so comfortable in my status that I wasn’t looking forward to the whole family and motherhood thingyyy.”

Picturing Yemisi pregnant and dragging a two year old kid along was almost impossible. Her Diva aura just wouldn’t allow. “I guess change is the only constant thing.”

“Oh well, that’s something.” She sighed with her emoticon, and continued. “Anna, I’ve decided not to cut my hair for a while, because of the wedding. I want to do a natural bridal style.”

“Good luck with that. You that can’t go a week without shaving either the back of your hair, the side, or one funny part in the middle.”

Yeah, Okay

“I’m serious. No more shaving, and I need you to help me.”

The whole Madam Adams saga flooded my memory, and I wasn’t looking forward to it, but what’s a girl gotta do? “Okay then, no problem.”

Yemisi is getting married, and also pausing on her strange haircuts??? 2016 is going to be an exciting year indeed.
