'I'm gonna be natural for as long as it takes' Mane Matters with Nelly

Hello Naturalistas,

Today's natural has a gorgeous hair. Oh do I just love her hair and how she rocks it.

Let's meet Nelly

Can you tell us who you are and what you do?
My name is Nelly and I'm an Electrical & Electronics Engineering student of the University of Port-Harcourt.

What are your thoughts about natural hair?
Natural hair is our root, it shows who we are, we are black curly kinky girls. Let's flaunt it!!!

When/why did you decide to go natural?
I returned natural in February 2014 after transitioning for 11 months. Reason I decided to return natural was because at that time I wanted to have healthy relaxed hair, wanted to stretch my relaxer for 6 months before going for touch up and then I started seeing beautiful 4a curls in the middle of my head, I fell in love with it. I wash Youtube videos of the Glamtwinz Kelsey and Kendra and I just told myself that if they can do it, I too can.

Did you do a BC or you transitioned?
I transitioned for 11 months

What was the experience like?
It was tough. I mostly did Bantu-knots during my transition. I also found out that deep conditioning helped a lot

What was/is your biggest fear about going Natural?
Once I made up my mind to return natural, I didn't have any fear. But in the year 2014 after BC, I used to always install PS and left for 3-4 weeks which my hair doesn't like and when I take it out, my hair length was thesame. I had the fear that my hair growth was stagnant until I figured out what the problem was.

Do you have a regimen you stick to? What is it like?
Yes I do. When my hair is not in a PS , I wash and DC weekly, do light protein treatment every two weeks  and hard protein treatment every 6 weeks, do LOCC on wash days and LCO nightly or every other night. Wash with warm water and rinse with cold water

What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
No emotional struggles

Do you think you are in it for the long haul or is it just a phase?
I'm gonna be natural for as long as it takes. I'm never going back on my decision to return natural.

There are people that definitely have negative comments about you hair, how do you deal with that?
My family and a few friends never believed black hair could grow long. Thanks to my dad for always getting me hair products, he keeps saying my hair is getting so big and long. My mom that doesn't believe me has seen it for herself. My baby sister Vicky returned natural because of me, her hair is even bigger than mine, lol. My friends come to me for advice on how to care for their hair, i'm always so happy to help. At first, when I got those negative comments like your hair won't grow, your hair isn't growing, it affected me but something in me said I shouldn't mind what people are saying and today, my hair is so healthy and long, at least ii passed awkward stage, lol.

What's your must have product and accessory?
My must have products are EVCO, EVOO, JBCO, Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie, edible mayonnaise(tried it once and ii loved it), aphogee two min reconstructor). If I keep going, we won't finish this, lol. My hair really loves all natural hair products, all I have tried anyways, so I'm really not scared to try new products. For accessories, I love head bands, I need my Bobby pins, hair chain, flower accessories and lots more.

What is your go-to style?
My hair can never go wrong with Puffs. I love doing them and it's so easy to do.

What advice do you have for anyone just going natural?
My advice to those who made the decision already and those who are skeptical is that, go for it, there's nothing to loose. It may be difficult but with time, you learn more about your hair and your hair will thank you for it. Do research about natural hair, there are tons of stuff in the Internet that would guide you.
