Trichology Corner: Canities

Canities is the technical term for grey hair, and occurs as a result of the loss of the hair’s natural melanin pigment.

There are two types of canities

1. Congenital canities

This exists at or before birth. It occurs in albinos, born without pigment in the skin, hair, and eye, and occasionally in people with normal hair. A patchy type of congenital canities may develop either rapidly or slow, depending on the cause

2. Acquired canities

This develops overtime with age, and is a result of genetics. It may also develop due to prolonged anxiety or illness, stress, or nutritional deficiencies, which is what makes it different from congenital canities.

Canities currently has no cure or treatment, but can be disguised or covered up with hair dyes
