Mane matters with Esther Tom

Hello Naturalistas,

I met Esther on Facebook, asides stalking her photography, her hair  is Lovely. Just had to bring her on here. Enjoy

AN: Can you tell us who you are and what you do?

I'm 'esther Tom, an artistic soul, lover of New Age music and Rock n Roll, Christ-crazy, and a professional photographer.
Before the BC

Before

AN: What are your thoughts about natural hair?

Natural hair is GLORY!!! A beautiful farm of burnt black cotton!

AN: Why did you decide to go natural?

Decide? I'm not sure if 'decide' is the word. All my life I've been wearing my short natural hair, only dis time, I got tired of cutting. So, I let it grow out. I never even knew there was something called 'going natural'. I heard if from a friend of mine who was really into my hair and I looked it up on google and I'm like 'oh!'
BC

AN: Did you do a BC or you transitioned?

I've been BCing since I was born...lol.

AN: What has your experience been?

It's been an amazing experience. Getting to know how to manage hair this thick (4C); never thought it was possible. Learning about your cultural roots. And it singles you out from the crowd. The bigger the hair, the harder they stare ;)

AN: What was/is your biggest fear about going Natural?

Only fear I had is managing my hair texture.

AN: Do you think you are in it for the long haul or is it just a phase?

LOOOOONG haul baby!!! A ride for life!
Afro!

AN: Do you have any hair regimen you stick to?

I really don't have a regimen. So long my scalp is build-up free, doesn't itch, hair is moisturized, am good. I don't have a particular time I do this or I do that. I'm lazy about it!

AN: Whats your go-to protective style?

Braids and twists.

AN: There are people that definitely have negative comments about you hair, how do you deal with that?

Oh! all that stuff doesn't get to me. My mum is always advising me to go cut it, and then one day she saw my fro-hawk and went 'Your hair fine!' Asides her, I don't think I've had any negative remark
Twist Out

AN: What's your must have product and accessory?

Must have accessory is Satin scarf. Never underrate the satin people! when I noticed regular products don't work for me, I became cheapskate. 90% DIY. My staple products are lemon juice, onion juice, shea butter, lemon oil, coconut oil, castor oil, palm-kernel oil, carrot oil, avocado oil, olive oil. And my holy-grail is HONEY!

Fro-hawk

AN: What's your advice to anyone planning to ditch relaxers?

Hair thinning, scalp burns, weak strands, split ends, receding hairlines...If you want to ditch relaxers, do it like YESTERDAY!

Thank you for your time.

  7. Our cultural identity and attributes are under seige! We have for long compounded our crisis points!

I have a dream! I have a dream that one day my daughters and those of yours will be proud to flaunt their gracious, black, and natural hair, 'africanly', in the streets of Africa, where the arena of identity is still under European hegemony!

  17. This lady looks like someone who would be very creative in her hairstyling techniques when her hair becomes long. I want to see how she'll turn out later.

  18. Love her hair. Fro & color on point. I love her natural approach to hair products but i've never heard of Onion Juice for the hair. Just curious and wondering.

    1. Thanks Idy. I twisted and knotted d hair dry, then sprayed on it a leave-in conditioner. Allowed to air-dry. Den loosened it. If the explanation is still unclear you can check it out on google.
