Rocking extremely short natural hair aka teeny weeny Afro (TWA)

Hi Naturalistas

As you might have already learnt through the course of your using this site, the greatest hitch with the natural african hair is proper management. The difference between an unkempt hair and a beautifully stylish one is proper management.

Especially for beginners, it's always very challenging. Just getting to discover the setbacks surrounding your hair and how to overcome them at the initial stage might not be very easy, coupled with the fact that at that stage, you will have to deal with very short hair, most times, it is just very frustrating.

I'm going to spend some time to talk about managing the very short hair at the stage often referred to as the 'Teeny weeny afro' (TWA).

For your short hair, you'll have to put some work into it before you can get that stylish and sophisticated look that you aim for. That is if you're someone like me *wink*

Here are a few tips:

Try not to keep it looking dry. Yes, invest in moisturizers, oils and other good hair products. That's the basis for any great style.

On a very lazy day. See what I mean? :)

Be creative with styling it. You don't need to always wear it as an afro as you might become bored overtime. Try to define the curls sometimes. Styling gel will also work to keep the curls lasting a lot longer. You can braid the sides(mohawk style) or just one side, flat twist the front, and the sides, just explore!

Hair accessories are your friend. Invest in them. They can transform any outfit. It works like magic. When it gets boring, just try a splash of colour with a nice head band or a scarf and check out the difference.

You want to dress up for a friend's wedding for instance and you think your hair is just playing down your whole outlook? No don't jump on your relaxer yet, style it and try putting a nice flashy flower just somewhere at the side and see how beautiful it will turn out. I hear a lot of people say, "I relaxed my hair because I had to go for a wedding". Really, you don't have to. You can still play around with your hair and it will be a real fashion statement kind of hairstyle.

Statement earrings. Yes, I am aware that some people are afraid that with short hair, their faces might look smaller, with a nice set of dangling earrings, that's just as good as sorted. Nice colourful dangling earrings will give your face some volume while adding that femininity to your face.

Makeup. If you worry about looking like a boy, spend some time with your makeup. Bold lips, well outlined eyebrows and perfectly mascaraed eyes will give you the change that you crave.

A good trick is to try to keep your outfits girly. Little bits like a nice pair of glasses can also help you play things out evenly on a good note

Do not worry, it's just a stage. Consider it an investment for the future as you won't need to put in as much efforts once the hair grows out.

And trust me you don't have anything to worry about. You can still look very beautiful in fact, ravishing with your tiny little afro. Just put in some effort, explore a little bit and you'll realize that there's really nothing to lose.
And this will not be complete if I don't mention what I like most about the very short afro. Don't you enjoy it when you pour water on your head? Trust me the feeling is epic.
Well, enjoy your 'teeny weeny afro' now because before you know it, your hair will grow out and you'll definitely miss those days sometimes. You can check out more on this topic here

  3. Now this is for me. Since my hair grew from half an inch to a whole 3 inches I've been stumped on what to do with it. I usually just have it matted (didi) or threaded while I wear a wig to work. Seeing these pictures of how to dress up hair that looks the same length as mine, I'm inspired. I'm going to carry my TWA with pride once I take out this box braids.

  4. Those. are nice tips. Also nice styles.my TWA stage didn't last long, I had to go braid my hair after I ran out of ideas and it got too cold for a WnG.

  8. I've been wearing a TWA consistently for about 15 yrs. Before that I wore twists. Before that weave , tracks , perm ,and wigs . I. Truly love my TWA. I've mixed my own oils to care and maintain my hair . Not to mention ,once every 2 weeks I have to go to see my barber to get a line or edge done .Once a month I have to get it trimmed and shaped because it grows

  12. I'm having a problem with eyebrows. I don't use make up to define them and they're growing back from being kind of thin when I used a razor to shape them. Am I now going to have to use makeup to define them or wait for them to grow back? Having my twa makes the growth show even more. I'm not sure what to do. Help please lol

    1. i think u should see a make-up artist who can help with that. or rather get an eye pencil to define it. itz nt dat bad. it is basically not make-up to me. u are just defining ur brows. dats all.

  13. After 6 months of transitioning I big chopped two weeks ago and immediately put in braids which lasted only a week and half. Braids just aren't for me. I bought a curly wig but then decided to rock my TWA. I think that it will take some getting used to and trying different products to achieve the perfect wash and go but once I get a routine I think that I might actually enjoy this change. I plan on jazzing it up with hair accessories and statement earrings.

  16. Hi, I had a big chop about 3months ago. I trim it once in a while. My problem is my hair is coiled and it gets very painful when I comb it. What products can I use to make it soft and manageable. I love my twa but I don't know how to manage it. Also, what style tips can u give in terms of clothes to wear because sometimes I feel I look very plain and simple.

  17. I did the BC 8/30/14, after 7 months of transitioning and love it. I can see me rocking the TWA for years to come, that's how much I love it. Once I figure out what products will make my curls pop I will love my TWA even more. Glad I did it!
