Colored Natural Hair

Hey hey,

I hope you've had a pretty week and looking forward to a prettier weekend. I plan on going to a Hair event tomorrow - Naija Hair Can Grow's monthly Salon Day Out. Her events deal with Healthy Hair, and relaxed and natural hair are welcome. Coincidentally, she'll be addressing "Oils," which I've written about on and off for a couple of months (speaking of which, should I continue with the series? The posts didn't seem to get a lot of feedback and I didn't want to bore you).

Anyways, I ran into an acquaintance yesterday from church. She went natural this year, and yesterday I saw that she'd colored her hair. I thought it was really pretty and decided to go searching for different colored natural hair to share. I've thought about coloring my hair to maybe a red, but color needs intense moisturizing and I don't know that I'd be diligent enough to take care of it. Do you have colored hair? Would you consider it? Don't forget the tip from Ms Leatherwood - color your hair in stages... Black to Brown to Red to Blonde, with a 6-8 week span between color changes.

  1. You should know by now that we have a lot of silent readers on this blog, if we decide to compare the traffic in relation to the number of comments, so don't base your posting decision on the number of comments o. I vote that you should continue the oil series.

I like the idea of colouring my hair, but I am so afraid of damage. My hair is actually my strong selling point, and I won't be happy if colouring my hair sets me back.

  2. #team colored hair :)
    It does require extra care
I really recommend thinking it through and preparing your mind to put in the extra work for anyone planning to, before embarking on it

  3. I love colour. I've been meaning to do this but I want everyone to settle from the shock of first cutting my hair, then locking it.

+ I don't know where to get natural hair dyes

    2. Henna takes quite some work and technique to get the colour in, I tried it without success and so did another friend, but I know it's readily available in Lagos

  5. I'm not a fan of hair colouring.
Even if I want to colour my hair, it will be brown; any other colour is a no go area.

The highest I can do is to apply those hair colour sprays to tint my hair look a bit but to dye? Naaaaaa!

Still, I love my natural BLACK hair colour.

  7. I did the BC almost 2 moths ago and I am getting tired of the TWA. Been thinking of colouring for some pizzazz!! When I had relaxed hair, I experimented with colour a whole lot and if it didn't turn out like I wanted, I dyed black again, chei, dat hair suffered. Now, I don't know the first thing about colouring my hair or where to get it done. Maybe I should just wait.

  9. I've always wanted to colour my hair and finally decided to risk it recently.

I went to a salon and used a semi-permanent first in August (Clairol Beautiful Collection) to get an idea of how it'd look, meh, no show. See stylists telling me story.

Then I tried henna at home, boy is it messy, a hint of red would show in sunlight but it was barely there so that was also a bust. I hear it takes repeated applications and I knew I didn't have the energy.

So I went back to google and a million hair sites when I decided to take the plunge and go with a permanent dye, I went to a salon and was told that it's best to get a dye formulated for black hair as due to its porosity and texture, it takes quite a bit to colour. I ended up using Clairol Textures & Tones Blazing Burgundy. I got this professionally done in October and mehn the pack did not lie, I came out with red hair and I was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.

I can't say that my hair is drier and all the other things that accompany processing but it's too soon to say, It was initially really dry after dying but a DC fixed that and now my hair is back to normal but with a strong pop of colour.
