Natural hairstyles for 31 days!

Helloooooooooooooo!

How's your week been? I hope it was pretty, splendid and pretty splendid. Last week I told you I had a surprise for you, and today I deliver! About a month ago, I determined to leave my hair out for at least one month. Usually, I would switch it up with one of my custom wigs and occasionally, braids. But this time, I didn't just want to leave my hair out. I wanted to change my hair style EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy. After the first week, I started running out of ideas. And then I turned to Google (not Youtube) and our very own Kenyan Mystic here on African Naturalistas. I also found a natural hair blogger who did 30 Updos in 30 Days - I also copied some of her styles.

This exercise taught me that there's so much we can do with our hair! Whoever said natural hair's boring doesn't know what they're talking about. I mean, I twisted my hair just once, to get a twist out (first picture). It also fostered my creativity, made me ensure that I took better care of my hair, and made me appreciate my hair a little more. I also learned to incorporate hair accessories into my styling - scarves, combs, flower pins, etc.

So here goes...
DAY ONE

DAY TWO
High puff. One of my go-to hairstyles (which is also on the AN header)
 DAY THREE

DAY FOUR

DAY FIVE
I like my plain old 'fro
 DAY SIX

DAY SEVEN

Click to see the rest of the styles...

 DAY EIGHT
Slightly different from the one above. I folded forward :)
 DAY NINE
This was one flat twist all the way straight back, but on the side.
 DAY TEN

DAY ELEVEN

DAY TWELVE
This is a side 'fro, but the pic didn't come out clearly
 DAY THIRTEEN

DAY FOURTEEN
I was going for a vintage 50s-inspired look.

DAY FIFTEEN

DAY SIXTEEN

DAY SEVENTEEN

DAY EIGHTEEN

DAY NINETEEN

DAY TWENTY

DAY TWENTY-ONE
Braid out from the day before

DAY TWENTY-TWO
Two flat-twists to the middle of my head
 DAY TWENTY-THREE
One flat twist around - Grecian style

DAY TWENTY-FOUR
At this point, I was getting tired. It's just one plait/braid, tucked in.
 DAY TWENTY-FIVE
My take on Kenyan Mystic's Onion Bun
 DAY TWENTY-SIX

DAY TWENTY-SEVEN

DAY TWENTY-EIGHT

DAY TWENTY-NINE

DAY THIRTY
Confession: I attempted Kenyan Mystic's Librarian look, but preferred it with the back down

DAY THIRTY-ONE
Low bun

What do you think? Not to sound conceited, but I'm pretty darn proud of myself for sticking to my impromptu challenge. Of course, not every style is a HIT, but I think I did okay.

Have a lovely weekend... Try something new!

  7. One word - wow!
You rocked it, dear! I know how challenging this can be 'cause I tried wearing my hair out for three months straight, I wasn't switching up the styles on a daily and I know it was still hectic.
I'm sure Irene will be so proud of you :)

  10. Thanks everyone!

It WAS tough and I almost chickened out a couple of times, but I think it was a necessary challenge for me. I'm happy it's over though. At this point, I'm SO READY for braids! :p

@TMC: Yup, everyday. And I do my makeup in the car, so...
