How to Combat Natural Hair Shrinkage

Can we all agree that this is a problem? Like after growing your hair for like a year, you loosen from a protective style and you are uber excited when you done because you see how much progress you´ve made and you can´t wait to flaunt it in the faces of the people that did not believe in your journey, you sha won´t carry dirty hair there bah? Then you wash, and your semi-big afro turns to a TWA...

It can pain! But not to worry naturalistas, I'm bringing to you how to combat shrinking, so no one goes and says ¨Was this not how long your hair was 5 months ago?¨

4 Ways to COMBAT Shrinking (See what i did there? Yes its a serious marra)

  • Twist outs: Section and twist your hair when its wet, and you'd be amazed at the length, even better when you take them out, it would also help define a bit of curls, and you can style as desired.

  • African Threading: The few few of us that had been on low cut since we were little don´t know how it feels to carry our head to those old women. Personally I don't like this, because I don't know how I can do it on my own, but if you can, its a really nice way to naturally stretch your hair.

  • Banding: This is a very simple way to deal with shrinking. Section your hair and wrap in as many ponytails and wrap with different bands (see Picture below)

  • Blow drying: When your hair is still damp from washing and conditioning, put in your hair treatments and blow dry, try not to fix the heat directly to your hair.

Now we can go flaunt our lengths to the Unbelievers. Enjoy your length!!

  1. Erm, you forgot braiding!

I put my hair into big braids or flat twists at night to stretch my hair.

LOL @ "¨Was this not how long your hair was 5 months ago?¨ I actually ask myself the exact same question. I'm not great at length retention, and I allegedly underestimate the length of my hair. All I know is, if my hair isn't reaching my waist, it's not long! :p

    1. Lolllll Berry. You aint serious. This shrinkage is frustrating though, to be honest. Someone like me has 70% shrinkage cos of my hair texture. I only see 30% of the hair. And people will keep asking why the hair is not growing, they just don't understand, and won't believe you actually have mami-water length hair, lol. After a while, naturalistas just learn to accept shrinkage as a unique nature of their hair.

  3. I do not see it as a problem. I've always had a problem with people asking 'how do u combat shrinkage?'. You do not fight it! It's natural for natural hair to shrink. That is one unique thing about natural hair. It's what I love most about natural hair;the fact that it's so tightly coiled that it stretches. Yes! That's it! It does not shrink,it stretches. The beauty of it; the more you look, the less you see? Knowing that your hair is actually longer than it looks. The shock effect when you pick a few strands and stretch for the doubting thomases to see(it's not like you even have to proof anything).'Shrinkage' should be embraced, and not fought with, I believe. I better go before I make this a blog post :)

  4. quickest way, flat twist. i only tried banding twice and stopped. i was wasting too many hair bands, and it's a bit tricky to sleep in.
I do threading when im in the mood.

  5. Sometimes I feel my hair isn't growing, but I have quit worrying about the fact that it shrinks,so now I pat it down for a funky low cut,or I hold it up in a bun,it just gives variety that's all.
