Another Natural Hair Myth

“I want to go natural but…”

Yes, I am sure many naturalistas hear this from their relaxed friends. So many excuses are given for why they don’t want to go natural, and one major one we hear all the time is that Natural Hair it too expensive to maintain.

That Natural Hair is too expensive to maintain is one of the Natural Hair myths reigning today. Read about the most popular Natural Hair Myth here. I know some naturalistas are Product Junkies (PJ), always looking for the perfect natural hair product. This makes their natural hair journey a money-sapping one. In all honesty, the products you use on your natural hair are really not as important as the techniques you use in maintaining your hair. The trick is finding what works for you and sticking with it. And what works for you doesn’t really have to be expensive, there’s a reason why it’s called ‘going natural’.

In my personal experience, I have spent far less money carrying Natural Hair than when I was relaxed. I make sure I wash my hair regularly, do my DC regularly, and maintain a healthy hair lifestyle.

So for those who don’t want to go natural because they feel it is expensive to maintain… fear no more, it is just a myth. Find what works for you, it might be cheap Shea Butter, natural hair gel, or oil extracts. Whatever it is, find it and stick with it. Don’t be a PJ, and other things will follow.

  1. Its funny how you might end up buying a lorryload of products and none will work for your hair... the basics (shea/cocoa butter, aloe vera, olive/coconut oil) are always the best!

  2. Less is more.... Using various types of natural products at same time can cause more harm than good.

  3. I think everyone shld go thru the PJ stage, while you discover what works for you. Granted i have some products that didn't work for my hair (We should have a product swap at the next NITC meet-up), but it seems all worth it when you find the ones that works for your hair. But it is not expensive at all.

However the one excuse i hate hearing is " I can't go natural because my hair is so hard, you are lucky you have soft hair" Makes me want to scream MOISTURISE, MOISTURISE YOUR HAIR.
    Ok im done ranting......

    1. Product swap sounds like a good idea, though I doubt I will have any product to swap. Yes, the key is finding what works for you oo. Whether it is raw natural products or processed ones. Just find what works for you.

As for the excuse you mentioned, it annoys me too. I did a post on that excuse here http://africanaturalistas.blogspot.com/2011/08/most-popular-natural-hair-myth.html

    2. I have Fruit of the Earth AVG which doesn't work for me.And I remembered ur post on looking for gels for ur twists. It would be a good idea to swap/give away products,so I can have space for more products.*large grin* Meanwhile I came for the NITC and even passed Omozo making ur hair, didn't knw it was u until I saw Dabs post. Also didn't get to meet Dabs. Next time all d bloggers shld just seat on a high table. Lol

  5. It's funny, because some of us scoff at the idea of using natural products. Folks are attracted to shiny/bright packaging- parabens and cones in pretty dresses? Yes please. Lol. Smh. A friend scrunched up her face when I mentioned I used shea butter and olive oil in my hair. I guess she was expecting to hear abt Motions and Pantene Pro v or something.

  6. Just to be controversial...why do naturalists hold up Shea butter like its the be all and end all. Shea butter is great but using it in its raw state is like using a Nokia 3310 when technology has moved way past that. But what do I know, I am the dealer to PJ's so maybe I am biased!!

    1. Naaa, many of us don't use it in its raw state. We whip it with other oils. Plus, it helps up seal in the moisture we really want to be retained in our cuticles all day long. Also, we have to deep condition naa... shea butter is a good ingredient for deep conditioning mix. There still loads of benefits oo

  7. Though I was a PJ at one time, i still find that I save more money by simply styling my on hair at home and wearing hair extensions less often. But then I guess a relaxed girl can also do the same and save money. I get girls asking me what i use all the time, and i always tell them it's not about the product but the technique I use. I like to experiment with different things, so I don't really have a staple or the holy grail product.
